Laser Optimus/Octane in G1 colors While at Bot-con I found a G2 Laser Optimus, body only, for $10, so I got him for the purpose of repainting him in G1 colors. I've got him almost completely taken apart now but I have a question; What shades of red and blue do you guys suggest. I have a Krylon red that looks pretty good, but I have a royal blue that I thought would be too dark and when I compared a sample next to all my other Primes, it actually looks too light. So, what colors/shades of red and blue do the experts suggest? Thanks in advance! Later Update 07-06-10 Finished Laser OP over the weekend. I'm pretty happy with how he turned out, MUCH better than the original paint scheme IMO! I got some fingerprints on him when I put him back together that I had to go back and touch up, and there's some rub points during tranformation that I'm not sure what I'm going to do with. I used Krylon Fusion red and navy blue, and Tamiya chrome silver. In hindsight, I shouldnt have primered any of it, Krylon fusion goes on good without primer and my chrome usually goes on alot smoother on straight plastic rather than primer. I think primer made the whole figure thicker than it should be. Thoughts and comments? Thanks in advance! Later Update 05-02-11 While working on another project I decided to take this guy off the shelf, touch up the areas that were scratched due to transformation, and made some stickers for his shoulders and chest windows to cover up those screw holes. Finally, threw in a faction symbol to finish him off.
Thanks for the link I'll definitely be looking into those labels. And allesbraun, that Prime looks really good! Do you have a pic in truck mode too? What shade of blue is that? Did you spray, airbrush or straight brush painted him? I think I'm set on using the Krylon red I have now, it's the blue I'm having trouble deciding on. Thanks again! Later
Sup dood,I've seen ya around on the GB boards before. You said you are gonna use Krylon Red(hopefully you are using Fusion since it's made for plastics),but how about a cobalt blue for the blue portions?
Hey Overhaulimus, Yes, I'm using Krylon Fusion for red. I'll look for that cobalt blue and see how it looks. I'll spray paint the red parts but for blue I'm still not sure if I'm going to spray paint him or airbrush him. Thanks! Later
If you airbrush him, then might I suggest some of Tamiya's paints? I use then with my airbrush,I thin them using the Future floor polish method, there is a tutorial here on the boards for that: http://www.tfw2005.com/boards/tutorials-how-tos/214559-all-you-wanted-know-about-future-finish.html Tamiya has this blue that might be nice for Prime: Tamiya America Item #81004 | Acrylic X-4 Blue - 23ml Bottle Tamiya has a blue in a rattle can: Tamiya America Item #85044 | TS-44 Brilliant Blue - 100ml Spray Can
07-06-10 Got him finished! First post updated with pictures, thoughts and comments appreciated! Thanks! Later
^ I agree that the truck mode looks very plain. I was thinking of maybe giving him a gray/silver stripe like the G1 truck has, but I'm not sure. There's a "panel" on each side of the engine compartment that I've seen painted silver but I havent really liked that either. I like the pinstriping that RID Scourge has, but Im not good enough to attempt that. I agree the truck mode needs something, I just dont know what to do with it. Later
one of the guys had mentioned primering it than transforming it a couple time and whatever rubs sand it down a little and then the paint makes up the difference.......second hand info though. How long did you let it dry, directions call for like a week which had always worked well for me painting plastics (non TF).
