I just ordered the UK Headmasters and Masterforce DVDs. Then I read a review that said they were terrible. It said the storyline sucked in this series. Is this true? Are these DVDs any good?
It might had just been the dubbing that made the series reek for me. From my understanding these are suppossed to be a continuation of G1. They don't follow any of the story arcs that were set up in G1. For example: The Headmaster heads are suppossed to be Nebulans in this series the heads are robots. All of the G1 personalities within their voices are gone. As well as starting the whole "commander" stuff where everyone refers to each other by rank instead of the closeness that was present in G1. I personally prefer Armada to this.
Dubbing not good but who needs it when the subtitles are so good. I love these DVDs and I'm so glad I have a region free player. Edit: If you forget the US season 4 then Headmasters make a little more sense. Look for cameos of Transformers that supposedly died in TFTM86.
The Xbox 360 can play PAL format DVDs (so long as region-0). If usng Metrodome DVDs, sadly those are region-2.
Having seen Masterforce before...no, I dont think it's the dubbing that made it bad. I'm not sure why people seem to like it, considering most of the characters arent even Transformers, they're humans in armor. Minerva gives me a headache.
Headmasters ignores G1 season 4 aka Rebirth. If you liked season 3 of G1 you'll like the first part of HM probably. After that most of the season 3 characters are gone, the Headmasters take center stage. Daniel and Wheelie are quite annoying and Cyclonus and Scourge become comedy relief, but otherwise I found the show enjoyable. Bottom line - I'm glad I got it and I'll watch it again. Masterforce - I've only seen about 10 episodes but I didn't like it and place it as the worst TF show. Just my humble opinion though. Bad dubbing and having not seen the whole thing may have biased me. But if you think the other series humans are too annoying just imagine a bunch of them operating TFs like their a bunch of mindless Gundams. That's the impression I got anyway.
Headmasters is, in my opinion, the weaker of the two series. It's a long series of battles linked by a basic plot. In retrospect, though, its no worse than the last couple of shows. Masterforce is a love it or hate it affair. The story is deep and the characters all see a decent amount of development. They're a lot more human, because, well, they are mostly human. Ginrai is an excellent character because he can be mad, angry and all the stuff a Convoy can't be. Also, Overlord. That said, if you don't like humans in Transformers, then you won't like the show. The subtitles are decently done, they get some criticism from some areas because they take some liberties with the dialogue and transpose US names for the more accurate Japanese ones, but I can fully understand why this was done. It's not nearly as bad as some would have you believe, since other than the factions, it only really comes out in the first dozen or so episodes of Headmasters. Once all the new characters are brought in and take centre stage their names are close enough to the US that you don't notice. The Masterforce set is better still since other than the factions, none of the names seem to have been changed.
Masterforce gets really good half way through. Doubledealer, six-knight, firecons, and grand maximus, plus zorak possesed and blasts cities apart. Human's die in this show. Also the pretenders are transformers in human form. There not real humans. Dreadwing even calls waverider a fake human later. The transformers are not as mindless as you think. Watch the last episode to see why. Victory is coming out to but will have no english dub on it.
