I don't know about where you guys live, but here in Dallas there are Pacific Rim ads everywhere! I know it's not Godzilla, but come on! Giant Monsters X Giant Robots!

    And then next year: Godzilla.

I never thought I would see this.

    Those look ACEs!

New GODZILLA To Parallel Japan's Fukushima Nuclear Disaster?

Godzilla has its origins as an allegory for the atom bomb, but today it's more of a straightforward monster movie. Do you want to restore some of that allegorical significance to the franchise?
Frank Darabont: What I found very interesting about Godzilla is that he started off definitely as a metaphor for Hiroshima and Nagasaki. And some of the atom bomb testing we were doing in the South Pacific in the subsequent years. The giant terrifying force of nature that comes and stomps the shit out of your city, that was Godzilla. Filtered through the very fanciful imaginations of the Japanese perception. And then he became Clifford the Big Red Dog in the subsequent films. He became the mascot of Japan, he became the protector of Japan. Another big ugly monster would show up and he would fight that monster to protect Japan. Which I never really quite understood, the shift.

What we're trying to do with the new movie is not have it camp, not have it be campy. We're kind of taking a cool new look at it. But with a lot of tradition in the first film. We want this to be a terrifying force of nature. And what was really cool, for me, is there was a very compelling human drama that I got to weave into it. It's not that cliched, thinly disguised romance or bromance, or whatever. It's different, it's a different set of circumstances than you're used to seeing. And that's tremendously exciting as a writer when you're asked to do something else.

Are you looking to connect it to a different contemporary issue?
Frank Darabont: Yes I am, but I'm not going to give it away.

This may put controversy on the film... but on the whole it would fit with a new Godzilla.

As for the other monsters, I'm hoping for something more than one of them just being "A giant centipede". Giant up-scaled versions of every-day creatures are pretty lame. Never really was a fan of Kumonga or Kamacuras.

I'm hoping for monsters with a more "Kaiju" silhouette like Godzilla himself, or some of the more classic monsters like Gigan, Megalon, or the Kaiju from Pacific Rim.

I'd shit myself if Destoroyah ended up being one of the monsters.

The hell are they talking about, controversy? What they're doing is great, why would you want a campy godzilla? And the original "was just a straight forward monster movie"?! The Japanese version is far from just a monster movie, it has meaning, it's taken serious there. Maybe the Raymond Burr version is just a bland monster film, but Gojira's always been serious... >.>

Like we said earlier, they're all new, original monsters.

I know but my point is I want the monsters themselves to have that kaiju look to them instead of just up-scaled everyday critters.

A giant centipede is just really pretty "meh". If it is one of the monsters I just hope they'll take some artistic liberties with the design which they undoubtedly will. It's not like the Assylum is the creative team behind this :lol

I'd love to see a burrowing kaiju. I can just imagine this big freaking 300 foot monster moving hundreds of tons of earth in seconds like it was a child digging in the sand at a beach.

New Godzilla (2014) Images Hint At Nuclear Meltdown - Cosmic Book News

    O_O

Not saying anything but holy Hell that would be pretty cool to see Godzilla himself fighting other Godzilla-looking monsters.

If this is true my Multiple-Godzilla-Hypothesis I posted earlier in the thread wouldn't be too far off.

I think by controversy, they mean the change of connection to a contemporary issue. And by straight forward monster movie, I'm pretty sure the article was referring to the most recent Godzilla outings such as the millenium series which were definitely straight forward monster outings.

Someone on TohoKingdom posted this a few weeks ago:

    Today
    9:15am
    Bob Eggleton

Akira Takarada has seen him. I spoke with Takarada at Chiller Theater. Takarada has a small role as an Immigration officer in the film in scene with the main character. He described Godzilla as being "Tall, thin, stands upright, small head....spikes..body the right color". He was very happy with him. This is the guy who was in the original film and in other sequels so his word is good with me. I said "Not like 1998?" and he said "No". This was a close conversation w. him and several other friends of mine when we had dinner at Chiller.

I was only describing what Takarada saw. Which also fits into what alot of people suspect he looks like.

That all said, judging by that description.... I suspect-putting together the ideas- he's sorta like the 2003 Godzilla from Tokyo SOS only meaner looking. Which also looks like alot of fan art on the net.

I wasn't involved in the film however I know for a fact Gareth Edwards is a fan of my artwork. He wanted copies of Famous Monsters w/ my covers so the publisher sent him some.

I suspect very soon...they'll actually show him in the form of a teaser trailer- Maybe with PACIFIC RIM? Don't know. Seems logical don't you think????

How these things get re-interpreted is amazing!! LOL!

    Best

    Bob E

Blaaaaaarg!! Zombie Blaster back from the dead!!! So glad to see this thread is still active, and thriving it seems.

As for the below description: The "thin" thing worries me, but then that's kind of vague, as long as he doesn't look like the GEICO gecko, I can stand a non-chubby Zilla

Maybe "thin" as in Final Wars Godzilla as opposed to Millennium Godzilla.
At any rate, I'm digging what I've read about Godzilla's appearance so far.

Has anyone heard any rumblings, rumors, or otherwise flights of fancy from TOKYO SHOCK in releasing "Godzilla Returns?" Ditto for the other Showa that are now out of print (ie Gigan, Mechagodzilla, etc) from Sony Pictures?

After the big scuffle over the DAM and Megalon special features, it's extremely unlikely that we'll see any more Toho releases from TS.
