Here's a look at a WIP I cooked up this week - Tunnel Rhino, from Mega Man X3. Here's the basic mock-up: -TFA Bulkhead body -Transmetal Rhinox head -Lego drill -G1 Predaking feet (looking into replacing these, as they are too large; TFA Lockdown engine block may work well; exploring options) I'll be removing all of the kibble, and most likely transplanting Bulkhead's own wheels to the feet in keeping with Tunnel Rhino's design. Still sourcing shoulder pads/drills, extra details. Next to X for scale: Next to Flame Mammoth for scale: I hope to be done with Launch Octopus soon. I've begun sourcing parts for Velguarder, Sigma's pet robo-wolf. I may be able to show that off soon. Blast Hornet is another that is coming along. And maybe Blizzard Buffalo. And Wheel Gator. And... too many. Ha ha. Stay tuned. Cheers! - Alty
What if you got one of the mini predaking KOs online? That way you get the same nice feet but closer in scale. That may also give you an easier to mount rhino head since it'll already have a slot in the bottom to make a hinge/swivel with. Also, glad to see you continuing the megaman figures! I love your work on the Blue Bomber's universe.
Hooray!! So excited to see another awesome WIP from you, Alty! Just a suggestion, if you're trying to find feet that work, look for Bionicle parts....some of those might be the right size/style for what you need. BrickLink - Unofficial LEGO® Marketplace has some good prices, depending on what you're looking for. Keep us updated, and keep up the amazing work!
Thanks, all. Yeah, Brick Link is a great resource. That's where I picked up the drill from (got another one for Spark Mandrill). I'll have to troll through that site and have a look at what I can find. Thanks for the suggestion, Diggs. - Alty
Hey, Altitron, Just throwing another suggestion into the ring--the Transmetal Rhinox head you have looks great, but for an alternate head, may I suggest the head of a Zoids Rhimos? I'm not sure whether one of these would be too costly--there's a couple of different versions out there, and prices vary on EBay depending which kit you find--but the key thing is, it has a built-in spinning horn gimmick and fits the Reploid style. Just an idea, take or leave it--keep up the good work all the same!
Looking good and all, but I don't think Bulkhead's body works too well for this. Mostly, the legs are too small in proportion to all else. Also, not to be an ass, but have you finished any of these Maverick Hunter customs?
If you ask me, I think the Bulkhead base is a no-go. There are too many details on that toy that simply don't fit with the desired likeness. Since your Flame Mammoth uses a Gogg body, why not use a Rick Dom or Z'Gok for Rhino? Easier to add details to that than to subtract from Bulkhead. Also, if you can find an EMS-05 Agg, you could just swipe the drills off that. They're perfect.
The legs do need some work. I didn't break out the soldering iron or screw driver before I took this pictures. It's just a quick and dirty mock up. Maybe I'll win you over. And nope, I haven't finished any yet. I have a metric shit ton of WIPs that I literally rotate out seasonally. I just have to make concessions with my personal schedule. I don't see much similarities between Tunnel Rhino and a Rick Dom. A Z'Gok, yes, with it's angular chest shapes and lines, but not anymore that already present on Bulkhead. I think you'll come around to what I see as this progresses. The one thing that doesn't really fit is the grille. And thanks for the heads up on a EMS-05! The extra drills would be great to have (shoulder pads), and the saw blades would work great for Wheel Gator. I got an even better deal! Zoids Lot Total of 9 | eBay What's even better is that it's a local pick up. I can also use the gator's head for Wheel Gator, the hammerhead shark for Metal Shark Player, and maybe the Liger for Neon Tiger. - Alty
I like where this is going very much, and very very much look forward to what your going to do with wheel gator. Are you going for more of an updated look for him, or are you trying to go art accurate? I ask because in the art, his head doesn't really look like a real rhino at all.
Sure. The art is obviously the base line for how the character should 'look'. From that, I take the more prominent design cues and try as best I can to translate these into a figure. I'm not tying myself down to strict adherence to the artwork, although the character should be easily recognizable. For instance, with Launch Octopus, I gave him some elongated lower legs that kind of remind me of an ostrich (now that I think about it). The artwork doesn't reflect this in the design, but I think it works really well. Some of the Mavericks (the earlier ones), have been redesigned for ported games on the PSP. Launch has a UFO saucer head (which I don't like), among other notable changes... TLDR; I guess I pick and choose. And make my own design choices when I think necessary. Artwork is the base. - Alty
