This has no doubt been done before, but not recently as far as I can tell. If necessary, mods please merge or delete.

The topic simple, name your favourite character from either (or both) ongoing series, and tell us a little bit about why. I'll start.

My favourite, no question, is Ultra Magnus. Whilst I'm certainly warming up to Brainstorm and Chromedome, my own similarities with Magnus draw me to his character. Especially after issue 16, I can't wait to see what Roberts does with the character. I imagine his voice to be Liam Neeson's, just because I think it fits well.

Rung. I am liking the difference of the type of character. His compassion and psychiatric nature contrasted with the war ravaged characters. His interactions with Red Alert and Fort Max. His interaction with Rodimus the last issue was awe inspiring. He seems to meek and mild and to see the backbone and courage he possesses is nice to see.

    Chromedome and Rewind top three.

Tough question because JR has made everyone in MTMTE stand out. I love reading every issue, but if I was to pick only one then it would have to be Swerve. I absolutely cannot wait to see what comes out of his mouth next - always cracks me up.

I really like the character that's in More Than Meets The Eye.

    Next poster: "Which one?"

    Me: "All of them."

MTMTE: I'd say almost all of them, but especially 2:
Whirl - Always makes things more fun when he's there.
Chromedome - I just like his character, and having gone through before what he is now, yeah. Bit of a connection to him there.

RiD: Wheeljack, but unfortunately, at least at the moment, he's dead. You always wondered what kind of whacked-out invention he'd come up with next, and rarely disappointed.

Whirl because he's so evil and Cyclonus because of his nobility.

    How's that for a 180?

Swerve, easily him. I relate with him the most because we both won't shut up.

My other favourites are Tailgate (because he missed the whole war), Cyclonus (for being a stoic badass anti-villain), Whirl (psychopathic jerk that caused everything to go downhill) and all of the Scavangers. Another wonderful motley band of misfits.

In RID: Prowl is my favourite so far (only at the 2nd volume). He's the Prowl i always wanted. Ironhide is also great.

I think the reason this thread hasn't had literally hundreds of replies is because we can't just pick 1!! its way too hard and I imagine most of us don't want to appear indecisive. for me it depends on my mood one day whirl is my favourite, the next it could be swerve, maybe the day after it is rung etc

Wow, it's gotta be a good sign for a series, when you really can't narrow it down to one... or even three characters.

    Whirl
    - for being the volatile, bombastic, dangerous, mostly irredeemable jackass that he is...
Ratchet - for being such a fundamentally decent, hardworking, grouchy old cynic
Chromedome - for being an emotionally tormented, brooding central protagonist that I actually care about
Cyclonus - for being a nuanced portrayal of a "romantic" fascist idealist

Oh wait... and what about those other characters who aren't regulars who I LOVE in MTMTE... ? Like Orion Pax, arguably one of the very few truly respectable Optimus depictions out there, or Prowl in all of his flashback glory, or Senator Shockwave, the altruist who was responsible for Optimus Prime becoming who he was, or the Scavengers as a group, just for the sake of having a misfit group of Decepticon grunts in the spotlight for a change.. ?

...and heck, who am I kidding? I like Rung too, even if he is just Roberts' mary-sue. ;)

And as for RID... uh... ummmmmmmmm...

... maybe I'll have to get back to you on that one. :p

The thing about Rung being Roberts Mary-Sue, is that not only does he know it, but Roberts actual application of what that means is completely different to everyone elses.

Other writers: I'm going to create a character who's a super strong, super sexy ninja, who used to be a bad guy but now he's redeemed, and he's super fast too, and his eyes shoot laserbeams!

Roberts: I'm going to create a character who spontaniously spawns story arcs, who's witnessed but not participated in all the great historical events, who constantly ends up being a punching bag but manages to survive, and who saves people by talking to them!

I can't pick a favourite character from MTMTE because they're all so awesome.

RID, umm, Starscream I suppose. I few months ago I'd have said Prowl, when he was interesting and before it all got stoopid.

I think Rung is a smartly written character who dodges a lot of the Mary-Sue conventions, but still sits on that edge. Mary-Sues are not just limited to super-ninjas.

The sense that he's SO giving, SO understanding, SO experienced, SO smart/observant, SO at the centre of everything, even if nobody notices him... as well as this lurking intonation that he may be the key to everything (brightest spark, ubiquitous, probably knows stuff, etc)... those are also traits of the Mary-Sue. He's the most ostentatiously quiet, unobtrusive guy ever. :)

But like I said... it's subtle enough, and he's a likeable enough character, that it doesn't distract very much.
