Next up in our series of galleries on Masterpiece Soundwave and his minions we have the first of the two sets that featured Soundwave's cassette minions. MP-15 added Rumble (the red one) and Jaguar (aka Ravage) to the Masterpiece lineup. Like Masterpiece Laserbeak they are no bigger in cassette mode than the original Generation 1 cassettes.

Of the two, Ravage stands out like Laserbeak for being a marvel of engineering - the rockets, an accessory on Generation 1 Ravage, are fully integrated here and a clever transformation means that Ravage gets a jaguar mode that is scarily close to how he appeared in the cartoon. I say scary purely because of how tiny he is - definitely one to read the instructions on first!

Rumble meanwhile is equally impressive, less so in engineering (though the fact so much is packed into a small size is cool) but in poseability. Masterpiece Rumble has an insane amount of poseability for a toy around the same size as a Cyberverse toy. The fact he has a full complement of accessories including the iconic piledrivers, and that these can be used in some creative ways by Masterpiece Soundwave is the icing on a very sweet and tasty cake.

I love how he's scaled. He almost fits into Alternators Frenzy.  

 

Ravage is called Jaguar in Japan since G1.

 

If I'm not mistaken Jaguar was always Ravage's name in the Japanese line.

 

All those Ravages... and G1 is still easily the best.

 

I was going to say the exact opposite. All those Ravages - Universe, Masterpiece and Device Label in particular give great cartoon accuracy - and how little the original 2-dimensional one stands out, being that his front-on mugshot is a vertical black line. It took me a moment to actually find him. Modern Ravages are objectively better engineered, more posable, more detailed and better matches to every single fictional appearance in any media. G1 Ravage has simplicity and nostalgia.

Great photo galleries, very thorough. I hope this will see some more updates to the Masterpiece galleries. MP-10 (of either version) is surprisingly absent considering its appearance in "Best Of Year" lists, as is the orignal Thundercracker, MP-07. MP-03G, MP-11, MP-11S, MP-12, MP-14, MP-10B and Hasbro Thundercracker have also been released since the last (last-last) update.

Can't get over how far we've come since the skinny ass G1 version. Can't blame Takara, an okay first up effort for a cassette that turns into a jaguar. They just weren't thinking 3 dimensional.

 

Oh how I miss die cast. I wish they had put some on these!

I can't really see how there could have been any die cast, especially on Ravage - he's got so much going on the metal would have probably impacted the design somehow, or something wouldn't have been able to fold in as tight as it did. There wasn't much die-cast on the originals, either, so I can't say I miss it here.

Generation 1 was amazing for its time - given the limits on engineering back then and all. It's still, in my opinion, the most convincing as a cassette. As a jaguar mode though Masterpiece blows them all away, again my opinion.

I'd certainly love to have all those in the galleries some day - truth be told I don't own any of those (Lambor / Sideswipe is on the wants list though!) otherwise I'd put something together.

I do know that one of my fellow photo staffers might be getting an MP-10B though, so watch this space.

Haha, yeah the irony was not lost on me (especially since a number of blue ones in the Frenzy gallery actually are Rumble). Still he's more Rumble than Frenzy - original toy was red in the day, and in Japan, the red one was always Rumble. It's only Sunbow and more recently Hasbro deferring to the cartoon name switch that uses blue Rumble.

FYI Sideways77 - that's Alternators Rumble. There never was an Alternators Frenzy since the line finished before he could be made - I suspect he'd have been done eventually though if the line had continued and not morphed into Human Alliance when it was resurrected.

 

Project Soundwave continues   Love these guys,so glad i bought them.

 

I purchased this, and there is a common problem with Rumble coming with Two Arm Hammers for the same side instead of Left and Right, I believe I got both Right Side Hammers, and is a bit disappointing.

But other than that, its a great set.

 

Sorry to hear that,you should join the Masterpiece group below...they have a section for this problem where people can swap piledrivers with eachother.
