Was just thinking the other day about Megatron/Galvatron and his forms.

Megatron as a Gun: is really a bad idea for the leader of the Decepticons. He becomes smaller and there's no real reason he could do more damage as a gun than by just shooting someone with his fusion cannon.

Galvatron as a Cannon: Again turns from a guy holding a massive cannon into, a cannon that can't move. Again not a very useful mode, though you could say he could be more accurate.

Megatron as a Tank: I can see where you're going with this, but he's a Decepticon and most Decepticons fly, so they would have to wait till Megatron can catch up at around 60km per hour. and again he's be better off running around and shooting people. But maybe the tank offers more protection. Again not great.

Megatron as an alien spaceship: Okay this is fitting of a Decepticon leader as it means his has an Alt mode worth turning into and can keep up with his subordinates. But not very 'Robots in Disguise' is it? Why should he be the only one with a Non-Earth-based form?

Which is why I think that this Stealth Bomber design is probably the best form Megatron has ever had it's Functional, it makes sense, he may be a bit slower than the other Decepticons but has more destructive power.

I just wish it was a Voyager Class figure.

Galvatron has tank treads, so he is not immovable.

You're leaving out my favorite Megatron alt mode: the helicopter from Animated. I may be in the minority, but I think the Animated designers hit upon a genius idea for Megatron's vehicle mode. It's a mode that's not as fast as the Seekers (leaving Starscream to be one of the speediest Decepticons) but is more powerful and more maneuverable. Helicopters have that really intimidating up-close-and-personal attack factor that jets don't; to me that befits Megatron. The dual-rotor design in particular is great for him. It sort of evokes the hovering-death Hunter-Killers from Terminator.

I would beg a "quality" KO company to upsize that Megatron Bomber if I knew who to beg.

while the style of ANIMATED had to grow on me, I liked the helicopter idea. Your explanation was well put.

I still like the idea that Megatron rarely transforms, but when he does (no matter what form he takes), he uses his alt mode in an incredibly destructive and violent manner. I don't think he sits around in his alt mode waiting around for something to happen. There's not much Megatron tries to 'disguise' anyway.

Megatron is kinda like Dr Doom in the fact that, Doom shouldn't uncross his arms very much...but when he does...its to get his hands dirty, and everyone is afraid of the consequences.

Yeah, that Megatron Bomber needs to at the very least be a little taller than the Voyager FOC Soundwave

Yeah, I was mostly talking about the up-sizing of existing molds that knock off companies do. Not necessarily a whole new mold.

Whereas I've always thought that a tank is the ONLY alt mode that makes any practical sense whatsoever, especially if it means retroactively designing Megatron to maintain an extremely G1-esque bot mode. So he doesn't fly - good. That's what makes guys like the Seekers so neat. So tanks are traditionally slow - not necessarily when it's a high tech alien disguise. For all we know, Megatron with that alt mode could/would be faster than Prime in his just as arguably impractical semi truck alt mode.

Not arguing or anything btw, just throwing in my two cents worth of discussion on the topic :)

    Yes indeed.

It always looks silly when they show a jet just hovering there in a series, but with a Helicopter, hovering there, chosing targets, and firing a volley of death, it really can ring true with Megatron. (And another reason Animated Leader Megatron is my definitive Megatron toy)

For me, the 'version' of Megatron should be what has a hand in the alt mode. In other words, the alt mode should fit the portrayal of that incarnation of Megatron.

I don't mind a tank Megatron if that version of Megatron is a brawler first. Always leading the attack by example, rushing in, cannon blazing, melee attacking, drag out knock down brawler.

The Megatron as an alien/tec jet befits a self-agrandizing well, jerk. Seeing himself above the situation and not willing to bend an iota to the world around him, instead trying to get it to bend to him. He'd probably feel insulted to have to fight anyone but Prime.

The Megatron that's a Helicopter is someone who is aware and above. He willingly enters the frey, but hovers around, picking is targets to destroy but is actually applying the force with skill, aware of the battle as a whole and what he's trying to accomplish, every action is in some way moving him closer to his victory.

The Megatron that's the Stealth Bomber is someone who is all strategy and mindfullness. He doesn't fight the war on the front lines of the battlefield, but by manipulating all the pieces so that in the endgame, he can't lose; in other words he cares more about winning the war then the battle. When he acts, he comes from no where, applies force with the skill of a surgeon with a scapel, and then is on to his next objective.

So what if Megatron was a missile truck (Like Cybertron Defense Red Alert) what do you get out of his character?

A front line fighter who always targets Prime first or waits for him to show up.

That Megatron is just awesome, but he has to be a little bit bigger.
Just a little bit bigger than FoC Soundwave and BH Shockwave.

I'm hoping for a voyager of IDW tank Megatron. Then the bomber Megatron can fall back into obscurity.
