While it is reasonable that Magnus is pulling rank on other Autobots, he has no right to demand, or expect, anything from Jack.

 

Jack's with Arcee. I guess he assumes anyone with an Autobot is...well, an Autobot--I doubt Jack would disagree with that.

As far as I know, and never being in the military I could be wrong, but doctors are usually officers. Which means Ratchet is officially higher ranking than the other guys, whereas the rest of the crew are probably the equivalent of enlisted. And being senior medical officer of the Autobots means Ratchet is probably one of the highest ranking officers. Which would mean he's either the same rank as Magnus, or pretty close.

 

I find it abusive he's making people call him sir. I don't think he's doing it on purpose; the writers want an excuse for Magnus to argue with the other characters. Imagine if I told one of my girlfriends to call me LegendaryAntiHero.

There's nothing abusive about it, they are soldiers and this is how soldiers are. If you don't like it, you SHOULD NEVER enlist. Seriously.

Ultra Magnus isn't asking much more than a parent asking his/her child to call him/her mom or dad, really. You don't go around calling your parents by their first name...or do you?

Folks need to relax. The tone for UM is simply being set. If it really bothers folks, no worries, they'll probably kill him off before the series ends.

 

But Bulkhead isn't Ultra Magnus and Ultra Magnus is a brand-new character who also has never met these guys before except maybe Ratchet.

 

I know that Transformer fans are usually clueless about everything but I just love the fact of just how little people here know about the military and military protocols.

A Commander/soldier relationship in the military is in no way comparable to a friendship or girlfriend.

Your right, doctors within the medical corps are most of the time are colonels so Ratchet out ranks UM.

Aside from that, UM and OP have two different leadership styles.

Its going to be interesting if OP lives and UM would stay within team prime.

 

I think it's could that he's so rigid at the moment. If he stick around, it could show how the team grows on him and he could see some good character changes.

 

Even though doctors out rank other people they still have to follow someone's orders it's not like they can just do whatever they want.

Even if I am not into military protocol I highly doubt the Medics just pop up to generals and say hey you are doing that all wrong you need to put the tanks here, they have to rule someone unfit for duty I would think before they can you know take over.

I'm sure that's what will happen if Ultra Magnus pisses off Ratchet enough.

Ultra Magnus probably considers Jack a lower life form and expects him to be subservient to the Autobots not as an equal.

While Ratchet would be considered an officer, he is a medical officer and would have received basic military training and would have only gone into battle when there was no one left to fill in--we do, however, know he can fight, as we've seen him do so, but he almost always stays at base because he's better suited for those needs. Perhaps because he's only had basic training, that's probably why he hasn't been armed 

Still, I think Ratchet also survived as Optimus' XO (Executive Officer), as we've seen him filling the role of an assistance more than once.

We've seen time and time again, however, that it was Arcee who took point during battlefield operations in seasons one and two, most likely because she had the most experience on the team--doesn't mean she's an officer, mind you, but the best person for the job.

I don't think anyone on Team Prime was an officer--they all seemed somewhat inexperienced. I assumed they were all NCOs (None Commissioned Officers) with the exception of Ratchet and now Smokescreen, who's probably a lieutenant, seeing how he just finished his EGT (Elite Guard Training).

I figure Arcee is some sort of sergeant while both Bulkhead and Bumblebee are probably corporal and some private rank (private first class?) respectively. Wheeljack, while an experience warrior, seems like the sort of solider that would have gotten busted rank a few times for his disregard for authority--Wreckers worked outside the usual chain of command remember. They most likely would have gotten recognition for the dangerous things they did, but might have been somewhat of an outcast too. In any case, I think Wheeljack wouldn't have done better than Bulkhead in rank.

No one disputes Optimus' role, so no need clarifying that one, right? 

While Ultra Magnus was Optimus' key lieutenants in the War For Cybertron, he wasn't his only one. I don't doubt that Optimus took to the battlefield himself, but he had to strategize the Autobots efforts too. Ultra Magnus most likely took charge in Optimus' absence, which I find odd, as I always figured Jazz would have done that. Anyway, Jazz and whatever other lieutenants Optimus had could have been elsewhere on Cybertron carrying out other duties. Come to think of it, Jazz did a lot of things if you go by his bio; he was in charge of special operations too! As the war neared its end, and the situation dire for the Autobots, his expertise in special operations probably served the Autobots better, but we'll never really know...

Anyway, Ratchet and Ultra Magnus are peers. Everyone else is below them in rank and should address them according per military protocol. Ratchet, like Optimus, don't care about that.

 

I'd agree with Ratchet and Smokescreen being the only potential Officers on Prime. Bee is probably more like an E-4 or young E-5. Bulk an E-5 or E-6, Wheeljack an E-6 that should probably be an E-7 or maybe even an E-8, and Arcee an E-6 or maybe an E-7.

 

UM runs by a military command structure.... nuff' said.

Why do you think Bulkhead would be above Arcee in rank? We've seen here telling him what to do many times; moreover, when she's present, she leads, not Bulkhead.

Is there a rule that says they can't look similar? Red Alert looked like Sideswipe, Tail Gate looked like Trailbreaker, Hubcap looked like Cliffjumper, Hardshell looked a lot like the Insecticon that nearly destroyed Megatron, etc. Characters looking like another isn't something new to the Transformers universe--it happens.

The show used both actually  Our first glimpse of Ultra Magnus was in the second episode about Orion Pax.

Why the animation studio chose the newer model over the other is anyone's guess. I like both, but the semi version definitely has a better alternate mode
