Venksta, what lighting set up are you using for your Megatron model? I think the lighting tools are basically the same for most 3D programs, I know you're using something different then me, but the lighting on your megs pictures make it look really awesome.

how many lights/colors/type of shading/etc did you use?

XSI uses Mental Ray. I think 3DMax also uses it. I use a HDRI map, which creates the blue lighting effect(global illumination). Then Final Gathering has to be activated to get the HDRI map to work. Besides that, I have an Infinite light with a orange tint, set at a low intensity.

For final gathering, and HDRI, you need to have 1 actual light in the scene, to make it work. The intensity for that light can be very low, or can be high. It does effect how bright the HDRI lighting is. I'm not sure what max calls Infinite Light. But that light object affects the entire scene, and objects in it, the same way. Similair like a sun light. Let me know if you have any more questions about this setup.

By the way, I miss the Brazil render engine, which is made for Max. :(

I think I know what you mean :)

Inifinite Light for you, sounds like the skylight for 3D max, which does the same thing. I've messed around with HDRI before, its pretty cool. but not sure if im doing it right lol

I just tried looking for Brazil Renderer, and they don't have it for 3D max 9, only all the other version lol

Infinite light shoots light in the direction you have it pointed at. And the rays keep going that direction, no matter how far objects are from the light.

When Max brought in the skylight stuff, I didn't mess around with it much. It took to long to see results, compared to Brazil. In Brazil, you could get that blue global illumination look with a click of a button basically. I think I'm close to the same results in XSI.

I know what you mean; I use HDRI lighting (or radiosity in one form or another) for pretty much everything now; even Redeption is being lit with it, and it's making a lot of difference.

Looks good so far. But are you going to be able to complete such a task in less than 30 days?

well I did that piece in 6 hours, I was thinking about that, and if I work on it every day, I can get it done, and if not, we'll just have to settle for the top half for now. untill I can get my hands on another 30 day trial of another version, or work on it from another computer :)
