Oz the Great and Powerful - 5/10. That was way beneath my expectations. Biggest let down was Mila Kunis. I mean we know she's a really good actress, she was fantastic in Black Swan and Ted. But this was... awful.

Jack the Giant Slayer - 6/10

It was about as good as could have been expected. A nice PG fantasy almost-epic. A good warm up for the upcoming Summer Blockbuster season. Ewan McGregor should have gotten more screen time.

it would of been a better movie if Ewan was Jack. :lol

    Return to Oz.

this film kicks the ass of the Oz the great and powerful, at least in terms of effects. but then again the new disney movie doesn't really have any effects. as sit is all a cartoon, with people in front of it.

the casting is great. the characters are fun. the Gnome King, aka the rock biter, looks amazing. and isn't his typical "want to take over the world" villain, like most movies have. he just wanted his stuff back!

as good as oz the great and powerful was, this movie is still, vastly better. i have no idea how the writer got this movie to be produced by disney. what was the pitch? "I have a script of a wizard of oz movie, where Dorothy gets hooked up to a bunch of electrical cables, for "shock therapy!" :lol  or was it "Let's make a movie so awesome, that it will scare the literal crap right out of the kids in the audience!" :lol ! oh and for that matter, the effects here are better then the effects in jack the giant slayer too, and for that matter, avatar.

this is a movie with fantastic special effects. not the cartoons with people interacting with it.

highly recommended. it's been awhile since i have seen this movie. probably ten years or more. and it hasn't really aged more then a day.

    9 out of 10.

I felt the same away about that movie. I always loved it as a kid. The queen with multiple heads always freaked me out so much. I remember thinking how intense it was that most of the characters were all turned to stone. I watched it again a few months ago. The ending was a little strange, but the over all story was epic. Pumpkinhead was such a cool character. Tik-Tok always seemed to need winding at the most inconvenient times haha.

the ending is a bit strange... why did mumbi get arrest in "our world?" what'd she do to the children! did she burn the house down herself?

tik tok always did huh? didn't seem like a very effective warrior. :lol  but over all i liked the character. he is similar to the tin-man, who strangely enough, looks like a giant version of bender... but doesn't have homicidal tendencies... "He is going to give me my heart, or i am going to take one!!" while the tin man is holding his ax, in the anime version. :lol  don't break promises to that man! :lol

over all i just find this movie, to be a much better movie then the new oz movie. and MOST other oz movies out there. in fact, i like it better then the 1939 movie. which is a good movie, but I think Dorothy is a bit too old in that movie, being 17 at the time, and the character really only works well, with a child-like wonder. so she really only works as a 10 year old. because you know what? because no 17 year old, even in 1939, is going to "skip" in the woods, with a bunch of grown men...

so that is something i like about this movie. it makes her young. it makes her brave. it makes her be a more interesting character. also the lack of singing almost every word helps move the story, and development along. i have no problem with the songs in the 1939, it's just vastly less subtle. but i do wonder what happened to the munchkins, glinda, and the winkies. :lol

Not the greatest Don Bluth movie, but certainly not the worst. Definitely not for kids. I can see a few Joss Wedonisms as well as the Genesis for Firefly/Serenity in this film (which certainly shouldn't surprise me, considering he Co-Wrote this). The story seems to like to go wherever it pleases with little to no regard for pacing (or letting the audience catch up) but The action sequences are exciting, the Animation is crisp (For the most part) and its a Don Bluth film created for an older crowd, so it stumbles a bit. Worth a watch, Its on Netflix (as of this writing)
After finishing this (was about halfway through it when I wrote this), I gotta say, the pacing in this movie is just way off, and the Primary antagonists (the Drejj) just come out of left Field. Why do they hate Humanity so much? Fuck if we'll ever know.

OZ: THE GREAT AND POWERFUL - 6/10

This movie was...okay. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good, either.

The dialogue seemed kinda forced in the beginning. It didn't feel like anyone was acting, just reading cue cards (and no, I'm not talking about the circus performance he was putting on). Well, to its credit, the opening did set itself up to be a rather bleak and bland setting in the middle of nowhere. Eh, whatever.

I'm just gonna say it right now - Mila Kunis is far from being a horrible actress. But I gotta be honest,
she didn't really seem to fit the role of the Wicked Witch of the West.
Maybe the actress who played the sister, but not Mila.

There also seemed to be a few "obligated" jokes. They were there just to be there. Just a few nitpicks that seemed to throw me off here and there.

I was thinking it was gonna be a bit of a "liar revealed" shtick, but it's more like the "liar revealed" was more of him admitting he's not what we were all expecting of him, but he can still help them. It's not about who he is, it's what he stands for that makes him the hero and gives the people hope.

However, as much as I could gripe about the movie, there is seriously one thing that makes me want to see this movie again - the Little China Girl. She was a really great character. I seriously almost cried when she first showed up on screen because the scene was so well handled.

I lied, there's another thing that makes me want to see it again (for the DVD/Blu-Ray release, anyway) - I seriously want to go MST3K/Rifftrax on this movie's ass SO BAD. I really had to restrain myself in the theater. I know it's basically a cheap punchline, but ANY time someone shoots "lightning" from their hands, all that goes through my mind is, "And now, young Skywalker......you will die..." :p

Anywho, it's just an average movie. I'd give it a chance. But watch it as a stand-alone movie.

    The Great Mouse Detective (7/10)
Neat little Disney adaptation of "Sherlock Holmes". I'm stunned that the antagonist Ratigan (The Professor Moriarty Stand-In) was voiced by Vincent Price. Seriously, Vincent "House on Haunted Hill" Price. I could definitely tell the Cat was voiced by Frank Welker.

    the wizard of oz. 1939

this is the first time i have seen it, in probably 15 years. since they stopped playing it regularly on tnt.

i still love it. it's a great film. the effects here, even kick the ass of the modern "oz the great and powerful" cgi animation, so called effects.

i love the music. MGM knows how to do a musical, and they know how to do it well. it is ashame that they really don't make many movies anymore. and the ones they do, is usually a co-production with universal.

the characters are great. love the witch. the problem with the west witch from Oz the great and powerful, is that she tried to BE this woman. and she failed miserably. if she had just tried to be her own version of the witch, rather then be "this" version, where all she is doing, is an impression, then she would of probably of been much better. it is like Gary Chalk trying to do a peter cullen impression in the unicron trilogy, vs him doing his OWN version of prime, in beast wars, HIS version, rather then the impression, is basically what she is doing here. it is just not as good.

the only problem with this movie i have, is the ending. maybe it is because the anime version spoiled me with it not being her waking up, and it was all a dream.

but over all, it is a pretty cool movie. and it is fun. full of music. and interesting characters.

i still think return to oz is the best oz film, but this film is still fun. always fun to watch. and it made me miss the days of practical effects, vs the CGI cartoon effects we have today.

highly recommended. this is one of those films that i believe everyone should at least watch once. it is a classic. and it is fantastic. even if it has some problems. like the plot basically being the good witch sending her on a suicide mission to go kill the wicked witch of the west, with a bunch of grown men, because she is too lazy to do so herself, when she could of sent her home at the beginning. which is why it worked better in the books, and the anime, when it is the witch of the south that sends her off on the journey, because SHE didn't know the shoes could get her home. but GLINDA does. and Dorothy doesn't meet Glinda, until after the wizard had failed to get her home.

    so the ending bugs me.

but other then that, i love it.

    8 out of 10.
