There is more to the fight on Astrotrain what does kind of explain how Starscream won. There are additional scenes of Blitzwing & Dirge/Ramjet fighting. (Hence thier names in the credits despite no lines)

Starscream is seen to be sat in the corner watching & laughing

Basically he watched whilst everybody else battled until he was the strongest one there!

Logically speaking, Astrotrain should have wound up being leader!

Maybe you are remembering this shot? It's a quick shot and the focus of the action is not on the dead Wheeljack(who is miscolored as Sideswipe) so it's possible to mistake him for Sideswipe or even Trailbreaker.

Regarding the original film being destroyed. I believe that only the original negative of the film was destroyed. I don't think it means that every single 35 mm print of the original has been lost. Since the dvd master was scanned from a threatrical print(and every theatrical print was made from the negative), I believe that the dvd version is the same as the version we saw in theaters. Furthermore, I believe the bluray version was scanned from a different print than the DVD version yet both prints match perfectly.

thanks for the post, but thats not the image I remember. Something closer up, with a clear look at the characters.

Id love to see someone animate the scene for a youtube video, similiar to Dr. Smoove (minus the comedy element of course), for the Death of Red Alert bit...they whole scene has fasinated me, as it seems it would have been very on pare with the shuttle death scenes of Prowl, Ironhide and the like...plus now that Red Alert has gotten in the spotlight a bit due to his G1 Masterpiece incarnation, it would be nice and relatively timely.

And I swear I remember it the first day in the theatre. If theres anybody else that clearly remembers Magnus being ripped apart on day one in 1986 at the movies, let it out!
I never read the comics so I didnt see it there, and its not on and dvd, But Id bet anything it was in the theater on day one.
And there were more dead autobots.
And certain words were changed- When Prime dies in the theater Perceptor says "I fear the wounds are...mortal" and in the dvd and anything you see now he changes mortal to "fatal"
And Galvatron did say "quarter him" before being changed to "terminate".
Like anything I could be wrong but I remember it so vividly and in such detail that I believe it.

To all the people who remember the film being different in the theatre. That's your memory playing tricks on you. To pull a film, reanimate a section or redo the sound then mass produce the 35mm film reels again would take months. If they wanted to cut it quick they would have just spliced out that section at the theatre.

The alternative scenes I have seen are all silent, with no lighting effects & not cut together. Even rougher "dailys" exist of other removed scenes which are barely watchable

I agree with unicronsupreme; Prowl's and Ironhide's death were way worse than Ultra Magnus. I remember when I saw Prowl's eyes and I was like, "what's happening?" Then the smoke starting coming out of his mouth and then I was like, "holy shiet!" When I saw Ultra Magnus die I thought the exact same thing Galvatron said to Hot Rod later in the movie-they die so easily. I chalked it up to Unicron making them pretty powerful, but after seeing the storyboards, I really wish they would've kept it in.
It's pretty interesting reading what people remember from their first experience watching the movie. I also have a small memory as well-the scene where Megatron falls from the ledge. I could've swore he hit at least 2 ledges before hitting the ground, which makes his damage more believable IMO. However, the most recent releases have him hitting one ledge then a quick cut of him hitting the ground which has always bothered me.
I've also read that Optimus Prime also shatters somebody before Megatron tackles him and that's why the camera movement looks like he's getting up as Prime says, "That's a question you should ask yourself, Megatron."
I do hope at one point in the future, they do release the movie and include all these deleted scenes in full color/animation. Sounds like a good kickstarter project.

There must have been a deleted scene of Inferno, because his voice actor(Walker Edmiston) is listed in the credits. So at very least, he recorded dialog for Inferno.

Yes, Mirage is seen fighting during the city battle & Inferno is seen putting out a fire right before Galvatron attacks earth. Inferno does speak wishing Magnus good luck

I can not wait to watch these! I loved this movie so much as a kid I watched it over and over again, like Star Wars. I got my son in to Transformers, and one day he wanted to watch it 3 times in a row. Proof that it really is the best cartoon movie ever made!

Red Alert got shot in the back. Poor guy. Wish they could have added that extra fight scene in the movie; Devastator getting blow apart into his individual components would have been neat. Moar missiles!

Ultra Magnus being drawn and quartered; ouch. That definitely would have given me more nightmares as a kid, on top of Prime's death, Prowl's death, Starscream's death, etc., etc. Such violence, but hey, us 80's kids cut our teeth on this stuff!

Didn't you host a panel covering all the storyboarded scenes at a Cybercon years ago in NYC? I remember a British gentleman hosting the panel.

The scene that sticks out in my head that was storyboarded at that panel was the scene where Starscream has to shoot his own foot off to escape the transforming Autobot city.

    This.....is......amazing shit for me.

Thank you so much...this is all stunning. Keep it coming! Please! The 86 movie is still one of my all time favs. That devastator part would have been epic...I don't think it broke up optimus epic part at all..it actually brings him in at a perfect time..

ok, but does any of your material support the possibility of another shot (or pan) with more dead Autobots prior to the scene of Hotrod and Arcee moving the cannon?
