i want to get into this franchise and i want to ask a question first:

lets say i bought the 3ds version of SL:G and then later got the ps3 version, can the figures that came with 3ds version be used on the ps3 version and vise-versa?

can the figures from first skylander game be used on SL:G?

The figures from the first game (SSA) are considered Series 1 figures, and work exactly as they did in SSA, except with the game engine changes of Giants. For example, Ignitor's sword hits more accurately in Giants than in SSA; this isn't because Ignitor changed, the game engine processing the physics in Giants is just more suited to processing sword slashes than SSA's was.

If you buy the figures as Series 2, they are the same characters, but with a Wow Pow upgrade (additional attack/power/whatever that you can get from Persephone in the console versions) and the ability to switch paths (so Ignitor can switch between Soul of the Flame and Blademaster by visiting Persephone).

Note that new characters to Giants (like Chill, Jet-Vac, etc.) act like Series 1 characters, so no Wow Pow, no path switching.

Lightcore Characters (e.g. Lightcore Prism Break) act like Series 1 characters also, except they unleash a burst attack when they enter the game and the toys light up. Lightcore Eruptor is known to be shown using his Wow Pow in his "Preview" trailer; this is an error, Lightcores do NOT have their Wow Pow abilities.

There's an entire table in the first post that goes through what each type of character can do.

As a final note, do NOT get the 3DS version, at least not the SSA one. It is a horribly short game (my record is just over 4 hours playtime) and easy to beat. The storyline is also different (and considerably worse), while the 3DS also chooses to become a platformer instead of the console versions' RPG/Adventure mechanics (main difference: in the 3DS you can jump). While I am a fan of platformers, in this case the console versions are FAR superior, and the 3DS version is not worth getting until after you've beaten the console version. As far as I'm aware, the same goes for the 3DS version of Giants.

I for one enjoyed both 3DS versions immensely. The 3DS giants was a huge improvement on the 3DS Spyro's Adeventure as it eliminated the PITA that was the timer. Freaking race through the stages got real old real fast on the first game.

Hey guys! TRU has wave 3 of these guys now. Be on the lookout. It looks mostly like series 2 versions of everyone and a lightcore Shroomboom. Hot Dog will be the only new release and he'll be in a three pack exclusive to Game Stop. It doesn't look like any Giants are coming out til January.

I picked up the starter pack for my daughter for Christmas. She already has the original portal, but for $50 I couldn't pass it up, seeing as how it comes with three figures.
She'll also be getting the Legendary 3-pack, Legendary Bouncer (?), Legendary Stealth Elf, Target's exclusive Granite guy, GitD Sonic Boom and Flashwing. She really wants Thumpback and Hotdog, so we'll be watching for them in January.

Honestly, my favorite part of the game is the dialogue. Some of the voice actors are so good, and hearing Zim/Billy as Chaos is fun.

Agreed! Patrick Warburton as Flynn is awesome. That's quite a nice collection you got going for your daughter. It seems like a ploy really, but the more characters I buy, the longer I play the game. I can do the same level 40 different times and each time with a different character is a totally different experience.

Got the 3DS starter pack for Christmas, so my Series 1 Drobot can finally see some action. Also really wanted the 3DS version because it came with Punch Pop Fizz. Pop Fizz was already the most interesting character to me from Giants, so it's really great to have a red version.

EDIT* Herp Derp figured it out. Never mind this ranting post. *

Just received the Skylanders Spyro's Adventure starter pack for the 3DS today. Now I already own Giants for the 360, but I thought that the handheld version looked neat. I quite dig platforming and the thought of having portable Skylanders is just too good to pass on.

So I tested out the wireless Portal of Power from the 3DS version and I've noticed that Lightcore and Giant figures dosnt actually light up?
Can this really be? I know they're obviously not gonna work in the first game, but since you can turn on the portal without having it hooked up to the game, it makes sense to test out Lightcore and Giant figures like that.

Can it really be that figures with light only work on the new Giants portal? Wired and wireless.

If this is really the case, then the "booster" packs for the new game must be utterly pointless.
I was thinking of grabbing the booster pack for Giants on 3DS later, but since my lightcore and giants wont light up on this portal..
    What the heck Activision?

My Tree Rex only lights up when you're transferring him into the game. If the portal is just "on", he won't light up.

The thing is, the 3DS Portal isn't as well equipped as the other ones. It cannot even accept things like Dragon's Peak (in a level, on console it deal 999 damage, but in a level on 3DS it does nothing) outside of unlocking levels. So the fact that Tree Rex doesn't light up doesn't surprise me.

The 3DS version was always seen as an accessory, not another game. I bought the 3DS version for SSA and never went back. I only got the Wii version when it was half-price, which slightly restored my trust in Activision (slightly).

And anyway, given the price difference between the Portal Owner's Pack and the Starter Pack (with Jet-Vac, Cynder and a Portal), it's almost never worth it to buy the POP.

Seems like my ranting was slightly premature.
Last night I learned that the figures will actually light up, but only if the portal is communicating with the game. Oh well. Thought I could make them light up by turning the portal on.

Apparently the old Spyro's Adventure characters in lightcore form, Eruptor and Prism Break in my case, actually works in the old game. Didnt expect that.

idk if this is the right spot but is this game worth it for the 360? and if it is which version is better? Spyro or the Giants one?

I got Skylanders Giants for my kids for Christmas and it's pretty much all they've been playing since. We always have to check the stores to see if they have new stock (which they haven't yet).

    I don't have Spyro's Adventure, so I can't say anything about that.
The community here suggested that I go straight to Giants and so far I would say that's sound advice.
