Whats your secret with the black on black? Are these light box pics? What are you using for the reflective surface? What wattage bulbs you using? The black background, what is it? Do you use a DSLR on these? If so what settings?

Got love the 100 questions, but I want to try to pull this off if I can.

Here are a few pics of a custom I did a bit ago:

I've since added some Mazda decals and an Autobot symbol on the shoulder. My BT/Alt collection with my MP's are pretty much the only toys I would never sell.

Alts Prime gets a lot of hate, but I love it all around. Sure, it does look like a truck standing on its tail gate in bot mode, but its all Optimus, and he owns it.

Alts have really become my fav. I stopped collecting Joe stuff after the shit movie came out..really stopped buying all the crap TFs on the pegs Hasbro is putting out. Im all about getting the older Alts and MPs.

I think my all time Fav Alt is Jag Ravage tied with Mirage. The car is plastic sex, and then the cat bot mode has SO much character! They packed in so much with that one its hard to point where the best part is.

Wheeljack/Grimlock are the runner up for best bot mode. Jazz and shockwave look great, but something about the bot modes for those 2 that look right.

^^Oh, That BB custom is sweet!

With the prices of Alts and Bt's being pretty low right now I find it really hard not to start buying duplicates. For the price they are a huge bang for the buck. Too bad the price of Wonderfest Convoy will ever drop low enough for me to complete the set.

Thanks! I was trying and fill in the missing characters I think needed to be Rep'ed. I always wanted a full '84-85 set, and this was from right before the movie where BB became unavoidable.

Personally I think BT/KP Prime is fantastic, one of the best molds. I do think the extra paint helps tremendously and it really hurts the ALT version.

My favorites are Mirage, BT Prime, Nemesis Prime (ALT version- I wish I'd bought wonderfest when he was only somewhat ridiculous), Ravage (Jaguar), then it gets a little hazier.

Since Alternators/Binal Tech is an officially scaled line at 1:24, the scale reference comes in with the car modes. Before I proceed any further, I'm not trying to tell anyone how to display their collections and so forth; I'm merely commenting on the topic. Yes, there's some importance of how the robots look with each other, as they're made to interact, even if it's just posing. However, a robot can look "ok" standing beside another just fine, but robots can have all kinds of designs. Human Alliance figures, by contrast, have smaller vehicle modes (around 1:25-1:28) but their robot modes are larger. Even that withstanding, with this line that doesn't mean it's "in scale" or not.

With just a little math and a 1:1 reference point, one can determine whether it's actually in scale or not: How to Calculate the Scale of Models | eHow.com

    See also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scale_(ratio)

Again, fit whatever you want with whatever you want. Just know that scale in this line refers specifically to what is a 1:24th representation of the vehicle in question.

Yeah I was referring to the 1:24 scale vehicle modes in my original question. That's really the main draw for me with Alts/BTs, the accurate officially licensed vehicle modes in uniform 1:24 scale. That's kind of why I never got any Alternity because the scale was 1:32 (that and the high price too, lol).

Thanks everyone for your answers. I wasn't thinking about robot modes originally, but that is certainly valid frame of reference.

This thread reminds me, I need to find the grill piece for the RX-8 Shockwave that was missing from the one I recently purchased.

Also, the KP Convoy is painted. It's of course not got the heft that the BT has, but it doesn't have the orangish-red plastic the Alt has either.

There are some visible differences in bot mode, but are there any visible differences (besides the weight) in truck mode?

I was wondering if that was KP or BT in that picture.

I'd think the red on the BT is a bit deeper, but that's just me guessing.

Great image - love that mold. How much die-cast is on the BT version? On my alt version, the plastic on the bonnet has faded and is now a different colour to the rest, so had been considering getting a BT version.
