The prequels virtually killed my opinion of the franchise, I will stick to the original 3 films and ignore everything else.

If these movies focus on Luke training Han and Leias' kids, it will be awesome. I loved the books were the kids used the force to communicate while flying x-wings. That shit could be so cool on screen.

I wonder who they'll get to direct the movie. I'm thinking it could be Jon Favreau. It's obvious to see that he's a Star Wars fan because he voices Pre Vizla in The Clone Wars, directed the pilot of Revolution which had a Return of the Jedi lunchbox in it, and I think his directing style would fit it well. He can handle sci-fi action really well as we've seen with both Iron Man movies, Cowboys and Aliens, and, to a lesser extent, Zathura. He also directed a really cool sword fight in the pilot of Revolution.

So there were already pretty substantial plans for another trilogy? Interesting.

I agree. You don't have to like the prequels, but give the man some respect for creating the whole thing. I really like the prequels because I grew up with them and they were some of the best theater experiences I've ever had. Plus, you have to admire the fact that someone in Hollywood had more creative control than the studios. You can debate about the quality all you want, but how often does that happen today? The studio often ruins movies by having more creative control than the writers and directors. Remember Spider-man 3.

I think the thing I rue about George selling Lucasfilm is that Lucasfilm, for better or worse, is no longer an independent film company. George may be almost creatively bankrupt at this point, but it was charming in an old-fashioned way for there to be a private company, owned and directed by essentially one man, to produce films that weren't the product of layers of corporate management. Regardless of whether that one man was doing anything worthwhile with his company, and regardless if his product was actually any good (most would say it wasn't). Lucas felt so burned by Hollywood in the process of making SW and American Graffiti way back when, and he had a definite sense of pride that he was able (on the back of SW merchandising he'd wisely/luckily secured for himself) to run his own movie company up in the SF Bay away from Hollywood. It's kind of sad that in the end he's sold back to the establishment he's always resented.

It's entirely possible that the next SW film will be awesomely created corporate product, and it was time for George to cede creative control of the franchise anyway. I just kind of wish he'd held onto the company itself, while bringing in new creative voices to do the actual movie-making.

I was under the impression that Lucas almost single handedly ruined Star Wars, and that beyond formulating the bare bones of the story, the creative team on the original project forced him into completing what we know as episodes 4-6.

I then was under the impression that the reason 1-3 are....well....1-3, (lets leave it at that), is that no one was able to strong arm him into adjusting his ideas. And it showed.

This is the big con to the deal. Star Wars is commonly known as one of the first Hollywood blockbusters. In reality, the five Star Wars films after the first one are the most successful independent films of all time. Even though his movies were distributed through Fox, he had lots of creative control. It's a little bit of a shame that what is essentially an independent company has sold out to the most commercial studio in the world.

On the other hand, I'm very excited to see a new Star Wars movie. I didn't think I'd live to see another one and if I did, then I figured that I would be like forty years old when it happened. I'm anxious to see new filmmakers' takes on the Star Wars universe.

Lucas has made pretty clear a few times that the endless hating of him and his work has exhausted his mind and made him lose a great deal of hope in the franchise itself, He's a dillisuioned artist. I'm honestly not surprised he sold the studio out.

I love this new so very much. Finally some new life into the now stale Star Wars universe. I didn't think I'd live to see another live action Star Wars movie.

I don't want to see it happen. Given that it's a done deal, I at least hope that they do nothing in any way shape or form connected with the characters from Episodes I - VI.

Does this mean that Princess Leia is now a Disney Princess?

It's been said that the biggest threat to Star Wars is George Lucas himself.

There's a lot to be said about criticism- how to give it, how to receive it and that just because you are the sole creator, not everything is gonna like everything you do with it.

A lot of people disliked many of his creative decisions... and he cried all the way to the bank.

    Weird, huh?
