They can't be resurrected. They weren't killed. They're in a timeline where the doctor can never visit them again. With how this Doctor's been acting, I'm surprised he didn't freak out and do something to it.
Oh, almost forgot to mention, as heartbreaking as the last scene was, I love how it tied back into The Eleventh Hour. It was the forest scene from series 5 dialed up to - appropriately - eleven.
Warning this post will contain spoilers. If you don't want spoilers... then why the hell are you in THE Doctor Who thread right after an episode airs? I knew it aired in the UK hours ago and stayed the hell away from this thread. Seriously, if you get spoiled it's your own fault. Okay, I liked this episode. I wouldn't put it anywhere near my favorites but I liked it. I LOVE that the Angels went back to their old m.o. They work best as creepy yet slow antagonists. Seeing them in New York was also really cool, even though if I were a creature that fed off potential time energy and turned to stone in the sight of any living creature, I would NOT live in a "city that never sleeps". And yeah, the Statue of Liberty as an Angel is just dumb. The only good part about it is seeing it looming over a building with an angry angel face is kind of awesome. But if you scratch ANY deeper it all falls apart. It makes a LOT of noise moving around. It's also a huge land mark. People would instantly notice is moving or being absent. On the end, well I went into the episode expecting them to die. I'd seen interviews and the series itself was building to it. But then Rory proved he had balls of solid fucking steal and figured out that great plan to stop them. And it worked! That's how it should have ended. Them having won and the Ponds deciding enough was enough. We were shown that they liked their life and they should have gone back to it after what Rory and Amy did. To just yank it away at the end just left a bad taste in my mouth, despite having expected such an end. I do like that we now have an undisclosed period of time where the Doctor and River are traveling alone. I just hope they go back to River showing up randomly throughout her timeline. The reversed timelines idea is just foolish to me. Time travelers would meet up at random points. I just really hope this isn't the last we see of River. Yeah I liked this episode. I still miss MY Doctor (10) but 11 is doing a bang up job. EDIT: Oh I just realized something else. You can tell it was a good appearance by the weeping angels when at the end, I stood up and realized I was surrounded by small statues and it gave me a moment of pause. Obviously I wasn't ACTUALLY surrounded but I realized there were a lot more in the room than I had paid attention to in the pas-
I knew it. I knew they'd have the angles find a way to take them to the past and keep them there. Sad episode, I liked it a lot and I guess the angles get to keep Manhattan.
I've been getting insults and angry arguing for liking this episode from some people I know who have been watching Doctor Who since the old series.
It ended for the ponds like I would've hoped. I didn't want them to die, but I agreed it was time to move on to a new companion. And I totally agreed with Karen Gillian about not pulling a Rose Tyler and keep on coming back. With an angel story I was already hoping it would end with them being send back and living out their lives in the past. But I also agree with a previous post that it was a bit of a stupid aftereffect. Rory figures out a way to undo the whole NY angel threat, cheats death and then gets unceremoniously zapped back in time. (oh, btw, apparently River can still travel into that past because she can send the manuscript for her book to Amy...and what about the Tardis travelling to that time period but a completely different location and have them meet?) I must say I felt that knowing this was the swansong episode for the ponds seriously distracted me from the angels. I didn't find them as scary this time as in their previous two episodes, but that mainly came because the interest was in the Ponds and their ending. (Should actually see it again now that I know how it ended for them.) As others have said, the statue of liberty angel was ridiculous. Nice shockeffect, but completely impossible. Maybe if they were on that island, but otherwise impossible. Overal I have to say I liked this episode. And the timevortex is getting really eerie. Really looking forward to the Christmas episode and seeing how the companion will turn out.
not a bad farewell, and it wasnt such a bad farewell either. after watching the episode i remembered the Doctor saying that the angels where the kindest killers in the universe by throwing you into the past and living off the potential time energy. the Ponds got lived-happily-ever-aftered to death.
I had completely forgotten about the scene at the end of season 5 episode 1 when the doctor appears in Amys garden again when she's a child. I remember it caused alot of confusion at the time and people believed it could have been dream of Amy's or something. The only question I had was what did the doctor do with the angel at the end. It was about a metre away from him so he could hardly turn his back on it, and given what had just happened it seemed likely he would destroy it.
Perhaps he liked to eff him off by making him see both his companions returning to the past again. He also said it was weak. Nothing stops him from entering the TARDIS backwards though : P
Nonsense, there's always the handy "timey wimey" get out of jail card Kando, Tell 'em to get lost, there's no rule that says everyone has to like the same stuff. The Whoniverse is big enough that it's quite possible to enjoy it even if you dimiss entire eras....trust me, I know
Wait, we're talking about Doctor Who and you're saying a premise on the show is impossible?? I'm glad Amy's gone. Rory, not so much. It's been far too long since the Doctor's had a series-long male companion, someone to bro around the universe with. There's been some level of romantic tension between the Doctor and his female companions (yes, even Donna) since the show's reboot, and it's getting tiring; it makes the Doctor far too human and less interesting. Hell, I'd take a TARDIS full of Turlough's over whatever photogenic Moffatt moppet gets thrown our way next.
Which episode (name) exactly is this? I can neither remember nor find it. Refreshing to hear that from an old school whovian. More often than not it's "everything was better before!"
Actually I started with the show in 2005, tried a Classic DVD for the first time a year later and ended up liking that style so much that my opinion of the modern show declined to the point that I stopped watching for a bit during series 4, missed the specials and then finally gave up after "The Rebel Flesh". These days I only watch Classic DVD's and listen to Big Finish audios as the modern format lacks anything that could make me consider watching again. Whether that will change once Moffat leaves I don't know but at this stage I consider it very unlikely that I'll even bother to give the next regime a chance. I don't think the entire Classic era was perfect either, most of the stuff post Tom was bloody awful ( aside from series 26 ), but I would still take any of that to a desert island with me over a complete collection of modern episodes. Aside from occasionally wondering what others see in the present show that I don't I generally have no problem with anyone else liking it and never have as a popular TV series helps keep the overall franchise strong.
I started with the 2005 season as well, but unlike you I really like the modern seasons. Have watched quite a few classic episodes, mostly with Tom Baker, but they don't appeal to me as much. Love the audio adventures though. I've only listened to the 8th doctor ones, and I think they're fantastic. Makes me wish he would have had more screen time.
I quite enjoyed it. It was packed with nice little ideas and decent dialogue. I've no interest left in the Weeping Angels though - I feel they've been overdone now and kinda like the Daleks they've lost all their scare/threat factor. If the Angels show up again I'll just yawn at their tedium. They also used the 'Doctor WHO?' thing again. Tiresome. Was expecting Rory and Amy to finally go with a bigger bang, so it was a nice surprise to find it was actually rather low-key and they weren't actually killed, just displaced to live out their lives elsewhere. I'm really fucking glad to be rid of them though as they had long outstayed their welcome with me. An episode with Amy, Rory, River and Weeping Angels... it's a quartet of tedius comebacks for me, and yet it was a satisfying episode. Certainly put far poorer phoned-in fare like that gunslinger Western episode a few weeks back to utter shame. Looking forwards to the future now. Or the past. With Doctor Who it's hard to know when it will be. But now it's no longer 'The Rory and Amy Show' I don't care what it is.
I actually hated to see the Ponds go even though I admit Amy, annoyed the hell out of me most of the time. This season her character was really tone down and she actually showed some loyalty to her husband. Then again she was portrayed as being older.
Fair enough, if you don't like the Classic style as much that's entirely your choice and I can respect that, I'm not going to get a burning torch or pitchfork out like the idiots on the so called "fan" sites McGann is very good in the audios, it took me a bit longer to get used to his character than with other Doctors but I've enjoyed what I've heard so far. So far my favorites are, 1."Minuet In Hell" 2."Max Warp" 3."Human Resources"
