I know this isn't just FOC, but it really is annoying! Why is it when the host leaves the game needs to freeze? Why does that matter? Why are the games made that way? If anyone can give me insight on my questions I would be happy.
You mean Host Migration? Yeah, it sucks. I have a pretty sucky connection, and I often get kicked out completely when it happens.
All mutiplayer games requie a host. This is true of Halo, Call of Duty, even World of Warcraft. In an mmo's case, the host is the server. Shooters and other games can do this s well (have official servers for hosts) but that requires dedicated hardware for that purpose, and if no one is playing then your expensive hardware is just sitting there doing nothing. So games often select one of the people playing in the match to be the host. This is the more economic way to do it and as I said, Halo and Call of Duty do this as well. Being the host means that all the layers are connected directly to your system. You are the master system. All comands go to your system and then are sent out to the others. When the host leaves a new host has to be selected and everything transferred to the be one. Now the real question is why does it take so much longer for Fall to transfer than Halo? I can't answer that. It involves knowledge of how the games network code was written and optimized. If I had to guess, I would suspect that the code isn't optimized well enough, but that is just a guess.
Yeah, all in all this procedure of having players host the servers is complete and utter bullshit and a huge step backwards from the dedicated servers (and server lists) we used to have in the past. People would have huge groups that would meet up on these 100% perfectly stable servers, you always knew who you were playing with, friendships were made over those servers. All that is gone now. Thanks consoles. And host migration I dont get. Why even include it? It doesnt work a single solitary time. Not once. Im not fucking kidding. Everything it does is delay the match to end. Cmon, even ROTF had better host migration then every other modern shooter I have played.
HMS needs to talk to the folks at Naughty Dog and ask how they made online play so smoothly. People jump in and out all the time and the game doesn't skip a beat. I assumed host migration would be work much like it does in the Uncharted games.
Are there any multi-platform games with good host migration? I wonder if the game being developed for 360, PC, and PS3 contributed to the less than stellar host migration?
Ya know, there was a time when games didn't depend on hosts OR pings.... *cough* ROTF the Game *cough*
I'm just glad we HAVE host migration. I don't mind it taking a minute longer than with other games. also a match has never reset for me after host migration, maybe that only happens for ps3, but all in all pausing for a minute or two in the middle of a match hasn't really bothered me too much.
