After seeing Prime:Bumblebee filling the pegs around here, I started thinking.. For those of you who bought Gen 1 stuff at retail, do you ever recall there being any figures who sat around on the shelves or pegs. I remember seeing some Firecons and Jumpstarters sitting around, and quite a few Dirges. What about you? Any specifics?
I remember buying a Slag at a Big Lots when I was quite young. They didn't have any other Dinobots, just tons and tons of Slags. Weird. Beyond that, I really don't remember. I have a feeling that the Jump Starters must have also been shelf warmers, but I can't vouch for it.
Seaspray, Jumpstarters definite candidates. Nothing from 84 had a particular reputation, but Ironhide and Ratchet were easier to get than most of the other Autobot cars. Bluestreak didn't move too well, at least in my area. 1985.... Dinobots sold ok where i was, but Sludge seemed to be left last. Cosmos not so popular either. People didn't seem to take to Hoist, or Skids that much. ...none of the 'Autobot cars were as scarce as the more sought after '84 ones. 1986: Slingshot, Swindle, First Aid, Drag Strip. 1987: From what i remember, was quite like 1986, in that there were random Scramble city limbs left, with no apparent pattern based on the team of which they were members. Beyond that, the various Targetmasters, Headmasters, seemed to be selling. From 88 on, memory goes a bit hazy....i think the shelfspace dedicated to TFs shrank, and that possibly retailers were being more selective, thus meaning less leftover stock.
2009 is retro now? Anyway, Motormaster was a massive shelf warmer when I was young. Would have been 88 or 89 I think.
Cybertron Mudflap. He's got a great Transformation that compacts that Big robot down well. Its just that the Slim vehicle mode probably left people concerned if it was a good value.
I always wanted a Motormaster. but I never saw one in stores. I remember Beastwars 1996 deluxe Blackarachnia was a shelf warmer. Energon Ironhide was another shelf warmer.
