I guess the discussion about this is kind of over, but I wanted to point out that I really liked it that Nolan did not pursue the Bruce Wayne is schizophrenic with Batman as the dominant personality themes. I know Rachel talked about the masks that he wears in Begins, but that doesn't necessarily mean he's crazy. In fact, in TDR, he specifically states that Batman is a symbol, and anyone could be The Batman. The whole "let's get on the internet and talk about how we don't like something" is really getting old.
People are allowed their opinions. Looks-wise, yeah, but I still think Maggie is the better actress of the two.
Saw it and was satitisfied. Nothing spectacular like the last two. While I loved Bane throughout the film Spoiler his death was to abrupt, and he's never mentioned after. However, it was definatly a great end to the series.
My one major problem with the movie was its length. The word epic gets thrown around a lot when talking about Nolan's Bat-trilogy, but seriously, TDKR is at least 45 minutes longer than it needed to be. Anne Hathaway's character (not calling her Catwoman, because she wasn't), while good, was not really needed at all in this movie. Anything to do with her could have been excised and still would have been completely fine. Spoiler I probably wouldn't have groaned at the ending if they had just used a random woman at the Italian diner instead of her. It just would have felt more real to me. The performances were all great, and I would do nothing to take that away from any of the actor's. I think this film could have benefited greatly from one of two things: 1. Cut out 45 minutes of it, at least. 2. Turn it into two 90 minute movies, like TDKR pts. 1 & 2, so they could have developed the new characters a bit more. It also wouldn't be as tedious to sit through. The added bonus to this would be an extra movie for the studio to bank on. Good movie, but definitely not great.
Had no problem with the 2:45 runtime of TDKR. Unlike TDK's 2:30 which feels so tedious because every other more interesting character is sidelined in favor of Ledger's one-note vamping, TDKR is full of so many interesting characters who all have room to unfold. The only character that feels slightly rushed is Marion Cotillard's but not to her detriment. Although her character is never called Catwoman by name, Hathaway's Selina is the most Catwoman Catwoman whoever Catwomaned in a movie. It's like she walked right out of a Brubaker comic. Hathaway was note-perfect, and her mug shot looked like it was drawn by Adam Hughes. The only complaint longtime Catwoman "fans" could possibly have is the lack of feline puns and no Anne meowing like an idiot, stupid holdovers from the Adam West days of a half-century ago.
Except she is Catwoman. It's fine to hate her in the films but it doesn't change the fact that she is Catwoman. And I'm with SouthtownKid.
I envy you. Looks like I'll have to wait for video to see it again. I only have two nit-picks with this movie: Spoiler Bruce doesn't get another Tumbler (which is inconsequential, but, damn, I loved seeing that thing in black) and Talia's reveal is a tad bit forced. Other than that, epic, epic movie.
Spoiler I gotta say Bale did some fine acting during the Talia reveal. Batman had a total WTF moment. You could see the pain and confusion in his facial expressions.
Just saw this. Loved it. Some thoughts about it: Spoiler Catwoman: Sorry, not drinking the Kool-Aid here. She didn't make an impression on me whatsoever and was completely superfluous to the plot. The could have been striken from the script in a single afternoon of script tweaking and not affected the overall product whatsoever. Even in the epilogue, that could have been some random woman and it would have given the same impact. Bane (voice): It took a while for me to be able to take his voice seriously, but it eventually wore me down. Could understand about 70% of what he said, with the remaining 30% decipherable via context. The bigger issue I had with his voice was editing wise - it didn't blend well with the dialogue of the other actors. It stuck out like a sore thumb and came across like an attempt to break the fourth wall, almost like he was trying to narrate for the audience. Bane (acting/portrayal): Tom Hardy was good with his eyes, but the rest of his portrayal was simply sufficient. I know we shouldn't be expecting another Heath Ledger-level performance, but I really felt that this casting was done more under the mindset of "NOLAN: Hey Tom, remember how we had such a fun time on Inception? We should totally work together again! Waitaminute...what's still available?...Bane's still open, wanna do it?" as opposed to "Hey, you'd nail it, you're hired." In the end, it felt like he didn't do anything an actor who normally does stunt work couldn't do instead. Bane (plotwise): Okay, his scheme was a little too "Ha ha, I'll take over Gotham because I'm evil! I'll just tell the people the gov't's corrupt, and then do the same thing myself," but in the grand scope of things, it's forgivable. However the Talia reveal completely neutered him as the villain; and to think it didn't is blind. It really wasn't helped by him having a blink and you'll miss it death 2 minutes later. Talia: Brilliant how Nolan pulled a "she's really Talia...oh wait, no she isn't...huh, she is?" Nice little twist on a twist. I already mentioned how I think she stole way too much of Bane's thunder at the end, I really think that the playing dumb act should have been dropped way earlier than it was. I don't know where it should have been done, I just know they did it way too late. Action: The overall action was great, but some of the hand-to-hand stuff was extremely WTF. I might have to see the film again (which I plan to anyway), but sometimes it seemed like the actors didn't even try to make their punches and kicks look like they connected with their targets, and it even seemed like 1/5 of the time the actors actually turned the wrong way after getting hit. It almost seemed like Nolan decided to film the combat from another angle at the last minute but didn't bother telling the actors and stunt choreographers. Michael Caine: BRILLIANT acting here, some of the best I've ever seen. It might have been nice to see what Alfred was up to between his firing and the funeral, but he did not waste one second of his screen time. Acting (as a whole): Christian Bale REALLY upped his game after sleepwalking through TDK. The acting in this film, as spread among the whole of the cast, was definitely the best of the trilogy (even though Heath had the best individual performance). Ending: I thought it fit. It really emphasized Batman as a symbol rather than a man. And I fully support the idea of Robin John Blake taking up the mantle. It was a good place to end the overall story, but simultaneously wouldn't ruin it if Nolan changes his mind and decides to do "The Dark Knight Rises More" Status as a trilogy: Truth be told, it felt more like a simple sequel to Batman Begins than a third film in a trilogy, considering how it touched on TDK only tangentially (only the deaths of Harvey Dent and Rachel). Kind of like how DOTM didn't really acknowledge ROTF except that Megatron was resurrected, and any other changes in the status quo (i.e. Sideswipe and Wheelie) could just as well have been treated like the off-camera changes (Mirage, Wheeljack, Brains), if that makes sense. To pick an example, the usage of the Joker: Nolan did say he did it out of respect for Ledger, but honestly just brushing him under the rug like that felt even tackier. That and a few other things makes it feel like Nolan was a bit spiteful about not being able to do some things he had planned for his initial idea of Batman 3. Granted, a lot of this is subject to change once I see it a second time...
batman and to a degree joker as well as creating these personas got labelled with these names by other characters, the Gotham puplic and press when they became well known within the films storylines. Selina kyles character never got such levels of fame or notoriety and didn't refer to herself in third person and if she did she would no doubt get called catwomen
heath ledgers in the film for no more than 45 mins or less, of a 2 hour and 30 mins, that interrogation scene is one of the best written dialogue's that has ever been put on screen. TDK was a classic character driven film, that the joker was only a support character of so many great characters. You are saying there were more interesting characters in TDK than the joker? that the joker was overused instead of more interesting characters? serious. What made the joker one of the best written villains in movie history, is how off the screen that character was. He was this presence throughout the film. And the science and explanations we get in rises, for a nolan film was pretty awful. Its the weakest of the 3 batman films, but I still give the film a solid 8/10 And I disagree, rises underused certain characters, and certain characters are hurt because of where the film goes. I say TDK is the best batman film, in how they use their characters. Go through the list, Batman/Bruce, Harvey Dent/Twoface, Gordon, the joker, fox, Alfred, Rachel, the mob and the cops were fantastic, lau, I cannot fault any character used in TDK. While in rises, I can nitpick characters who I feel were underused, and the direction some of the characters did go which I would change.

There are people in the world that choose to believe Anne Hathaway's character wasn't Catwoman? Fascinating.
