It's a Martin Scorsese-directed kid's movie, came out the same weekend as The Muppets, but it still had a fairly large amount of publicity and picked up $11 million its opening weekend, so a lot of people have heard of it. Sorry if you didn't.

My guess is that Dragon Tattoo will win for sound editing, and Apes will win for visual effects. Not sure about sound mixing. They were all good.

No one will ever give Transformers its due in hollywood.

And you'll still find a way to take something positive and turn it into a negative.

Hands down it should win for VFX. The amount of hours and details that went into those shots were nothing short of extraordinary.

Hey I liked Hugo a lot more than I did with DOTM.

Besides no way DOTM will win anyways.

Well, like DOTM or not, it definitely did deserve those particular nominations - especially for the sound editing & mixing.

    "Hugo" is everywhere...

While DotM had amazing CGI, it doesn't have a lot of range. All the CGI went to action sequences, next to nothing in the way of emoting, much less the level Caesar and the other Apes had.

DotM should win for Special Effects because the CGI was spectacular. However, I think it'll go to either Hugo, this year's movie that the Academy loved but virtually no one actually watched, or to Harry Potter 7.2 as an Oscar for the whole HP series.

I hate to say it, but it'll come up with goose eggs on awards night, simply because of the Academy's and over-influential film critics' disdain for Michael Bay and his attempt to make crowd pleasers. Not hoighty-toity enough for their so-called refined sensibilities. They should look at the films on their technical merits instead of their biased world view or personal issues with the director or the franchise. To do otherwise is showing disrespect for the endless hours and frazzled nerves the behind-the-scenes workers went through for the nominated movies to bring us two hours of escape. Hey, Academy, would it kill you to not act like dicks this year?

QFT. The Academy has it's own agenda, which is different from that of the general population.

TF3 picked up $382.4 million it's first weekend, but I understand your point. Like Godziboy1993, I hadn't heard of it before it was nominated either.

I think it should win best sound editing and best sound mixing but let rise of the planet of the apes win best visual effects
