So this is one of those mythical sequels that is actually a reboot. Looks like no other notable actor from the first movie was asked back except Channing Tatum - and it appears he gets killed off in the first 10-15 minutes so that the new cast can take over. He's probably only there at all because they need to at least acknowledge a first movie ever happened. Guess that's why Storm Shadow isn't dead afterall - Snake Eyes is boring without him, might as well give him his nemesis back for the reboot. Amazing that it took them 2 movies to get Cobra Commander's look right, but I'm glad it's happening. Apparently Hasbro heard the cries of everyone who didn't like a complete ground-up redesign for such an iconic character in at least ONE of their old franchises being brought to the big screen *ahem*.
I like the idea that all but a few of the "World Police" Joes and their whole operation from the first movie are going to be destroyed by Cobra. Makes for reforming a proper Real American team, as it should have been to start with. Hope that's the case.
Uh, no. It's a direct continuation of the first movie's story. Check out the President/Zartan. Around which this entire story appears to be built. And there was no reason to assume Storm Shadow was really dead. He was still alive when he fell into the arctic water which could have slowed his vitals enough for someone to rescue him. He survived worse than that in the original comic. Baroness shot him in the head and left him dead on the beach, and Cobra still managed to bring him back to life.
I found Rise of Cobra to be pretty entertaining - not great (like...how does Arctic ice sink onto the MARS base as its "self-destruct sequence" or whatever?), but fun. The cliffhanger ending of Zartan taking the place of the US President was cool, and from this trailer, Zartan seems to be the mastermind behind starting this movie's events. And I'm guessing that with MARS being damaged from the first movie's events, all of the nanite stuff (save for Zartan's disguise) are pretty much gone now? The fact that Cobra Commander, Destro, and the Baroness are either not in this trailer or hard to find is a bit unsettling, but with the very direct scene of Cobra taking over the White House, I'm guessing that at least the Commander will show up. (By the way, how did Storm Shadow survive having a cut-up torso and then falling into Arctic waters? Cool to see him back, though, and with the same actor playing him.) And since Channing Tatum doesn't appear in this trailer much, it's giving me the impression that if Duke is in the movie and not killed within the first twenty minutes or whatever, he still won't be the focused character for the movie's story. (Curious, though: given that Cobra Commander just started being called that at the end of the first movie, the main enemy of the first movie was Destro and MARS, and Cobra seems to have a strong presence in this movie, wouldn't it have been better for this one to have the title "Rise of Cobra"?)
No exaggeration, that trailer made the sequel look 10x better than the original movie. That was badass to the EXTREME!!!
I have to agree. I only saw the first one because I owed a friend a man-date and he wanted to check it out. This one I actually want to see. I love the Rock.
Uh, yeah, that is exactly my point. It's technically a sequel, but considering they've wiped out 95% of the original cast, brought back Storm Shadow, revised Snake Eyes, and revamped Cobra Commander, you can be sure that they're looking to bury the first movie as much as possible and do a fresh restart. It's a reboot without calling it a reboot. Guaranteed this thing has been built to allow anyone who didn't see the first movie to walk in and not feel like they missed a single thing. Oh brother. Yeah, watching a guy get stabbed and then fall a mile into arctic ocean water -all while already being under the ocean- leaves absolutely no reason to assume Storm Shadow died. Okay man.
I'm going to weigh in and say I highly enjoyed the first movie without apology. I hear there's a rumor that they're going to kill Duke and I feel like that kiiinda really kills all the fun I had with the first movie. All that work and fun put in to surviving and saving the day ends up being pretty sad and feeling pointless when those heroes all get slaughtered at the opening scene of the next film. I'm fine with passing the torch, but don't kick the first film and the people that liked it in the balls doing it. Reminds me of Iron Eagle II. I remember seeing that in the theater and all the sudden Doug gets his ass blown out of the sky in the opening dog fight and the rest of the film I couldn't even focus on what was happening. I walked out of it dazed as a kid going, ".........................................they killed Doug!"
Oh, and Bruce Willis looks like he'll be pretty cool as Joseph Colton, but considering what they did for the character in the G.I. Joe vs. Transformers continuity from Devil's Due, why didn't they get Chuck Norris to portray him? Joe Colton - Transformers Wiki : D
Yeah, in a GI Joe movie. Again, like in the post you just quoted, he's come back from much worse. In a GI Joe world run by GI Joe logic -- and especially after watching the entirety of that first movie -- you'd have to be completely delusional to demand or expect realism at that point. And maybe look up the definition of "Reboot". It doesn't mean continuing on with some changes. It means history erased and completely restarted.
Looks like this one will be pretty good, if not really good. The first one wasn't horrible, but this definitely looks like it'll be a great improvement in comparison. I might actually go see this one in theaters.
I hate to be too optimistic after being so disappointed the first time but this one looks miles better to me. The Rock, Bruce Willis and Cobra Commander actually looks like Cobra Commander. It's a good start!
After feeling like Hollywood might not be interested in coughing up a bit of nostalgia any more wow they are being all sorts of nice to us GI Geezers. Cobra Commander having a battle mask instead of that weird thing from the movie is enough to make me ready to buy a ticket for opening night.
You are awesome, thank you so much!! I had to look up the director John Chu and WOW this is his first really really big thing, I mean he did step up 2 and 3 (big woop) and Justion Beiber documentary but nothing of this caliber and I must say I am impressed!
