I was just looking at my WFC Megs. You said the shaft of your mace is 5mm right? Megs hand looks like it could handle it, why not just drill down through his grip large enough to accomodate the 5mm shaft? Or alternatively if a 5mm shaft is too big, perhaps redesign a handwidth segment of the shaft that is smaller than 5mm and carefully drill a 3 to 4mm hole down through the fist. Just brainstorming...
Hi Mike, I was just reading the comments on your photo on the facebook page. I think using Detail material would work well if you're concerned about surface quality, and the material is more friendly to sanding as well. That would work for weapons as there are no transformations and other mechanisms to cause breakage. Of course, Frosted Ultra Detail would be the best for weapons, but that costs a pretty penny.
I've noticed that when I order a part, there's a slew of material options to chose from. I am hearing rumor that SW offers polishing services, but guessing only to specific material types? Any idea on their pricing? For example, I am refining a set of the Sentinal Prime hands(which are also great) but a major PITA sanding finger nubs that are 1/8" each (x 20....) but pretty certain all the parts I've ordered in the past have been "strong and flexible" So, it's a tough call - trade strength and flexibility for a smoother surface?
The material you are talking about is called White Strong Flexible Polished, which is found under the material selection list. It's listed as a separate material, but it's actually White Strong Flexible placed in an agitator/tumbler to remove most of the powdery texture. The finish is somewhat smoother, but I find my samples tend to have more loose powder, especially stuck in the crevices which I'll have to brush out. When painted and dry brushed it resembled pitted metal. Normally I don't need to sand my ball joints; I'll use a cheap toothbrush on it for the powder. You would want some roughness on the balls so that the joints feel firm. More info: Shapeways | White Strong & Flexible
awesome thanks. the more I work with SW stuff, the more I love it. I am tempted to take the short drive over to them in NYC.
It's not so much a polishing service as it is a material they offer based off of WSF. Polish WSF costs about $.50 to $.75 more than WSF, I can't remember the actual amount. The polishing is a burnishing process, so it's essentially scrapping the plastic flat. Thus, it is not suitable for designs with super thin parts. According to Shapeways the thinnest it can reliably polish is .7 mm.
I just got this in and it's pretty killer. Even though it looks really evil I'm thinking I want to paint it up for my FP Superion. Any advice on what paints to use for the handle and blades? I'm thinking blue for the blades and I opted for the gray plastic material but want that sort of weathered metal look you used for your pics in the OP. Thanks for the awesome item.
Hi Yop, Glad you got the Megamace I'm pretty proud of it. I did a black base coat and then silver drybrushing for the handle. I'm not sure what material you printed the blades with; I printed them in transparent detail and I airbrushed clear purple with fluorescent purple edges for that glowing effect. Do post pics here when you're done painting! I love to see other's work
I did the transparent detail as well. I don't have an airbrush so I'll have to think about what to do with the blades themselves. Like I said, I'll probably change them to blue to be more "good" colored.
Hi guys, Someone has recently ordered the mace in White Strong Flexible Polished. I have received an email from Shapeways saying it cannot be printed in WSFP because of a thin wall issue. It boggles the mind that the mace has been printed multiple times with no problems and now I suddenly have an issue. I apologise for this to have happened. I'm presently contacting Shapeways for potential solutions but most likely you will experience a delay in production. Sorry again, I'll try to get the order to go through for you as soon as possible.
As of this moment, no...cuz we are not going to have leader sized WFC/FOC figures so I have no reason to create one. However, other weapons which are 'justifiable' to create like movie Optimus' axe are more likely to be made. It's official; Shapeways has taken the option of WSFP out of the MegaMace list, so I guess we all have to live with it. The other materials are still available. You're right, the contrast between textures is what made this design so special, I guess :3
