Hoping against hope that there's merit in the idea of some GoBots inspiration. CyKill from Wreck-Gar would be awesome.

Very interesting stuff, and a lot of terrific ideas on this thread.

Let me try to break this down, Da Vinci Code style. This may be a bit long . . .

Three are seeing their first updates ever, and what an update(s) it is!

This seems pretty straightforward, and is probably a reference to G1 characters who have not received classics updates yet. The fact that the post later refers specifically to G1 characters such as Brawn supports this idea. The lists that a few folks have made are useful. As some have pointed out, you can split hairs a little, and question what a real "update" is. Most likely this will refer to G1 characters that are somewhat obscure. The jumpstarters would fit the bill, as would some others from the 1985 timeframe. The Deluxe autobots, Whirl and Roadbuster could be on tap as well.

For two of them, we have drawn upon the "distant" past... what that means will be known soon enough!

The "'distant' past" could refer to one of two things. In a literal sense, this could refer to the actual toy history of the Transformers, such as Diaclone, Machine-Robo, etc. as some have pointed out. Putting the word distant in quotations may be a reference to that fact, that we are going back to the early 1980's, or the 1970's, which is when some of the diaclone designs were created. This would support the idea of a Botcon set where we get Diaclone colored classics toys.

Alternatively, the "'distant' past" could refer to the Transformers storylines. There are a number of possibilities.

    Comics

For the comics, in the Marvel continuity we have the Unicron and Primus storyline that forms the origin of the Transformers: where they were two Gods that battled it out, with Primus retreating and becoming Cybertron, creating the TF's in his image to battle Unicron on the day when the Chaos Bringer finally tracks down Primus. Emiraate Xaaron, and Unicron and Primus are characters that could be featured. In particular, in one of the original Marvel TF comics, Starscream embarks on a journey to the past where he witnesses one of Optimus Prime's first missions where Optimus is still a lowly captain but manages to foil Megatron and begin rising up the ranks. We could see one of these type of references.

In the Dreamwave continuity we have the War Within, and the original 13 TF's. We have the Fallen, and many early designs for the classic characters. This seems a little less likely, because we have seen toy releases of the War Within designs several years back in the Titanium line. But it remains a possibility.

For the IDW continuity, I haven't read everything yet, so someone else may be better suited to take a crack here. I'm still making my way through the IDW material, good stuff by the way. I've seen a few references to how long the war has been ongoing, and the war burnout suffered by characters from both sides. There may be some material to mine in there.

For the UK comics, we have a good amount of history with all the time travel storylines. I can't think of much off the top of my head that would delve into ancient TF history here, however.

    TV Show

For the original Sunbow cartoon, we've got several episodes that go back to the past. A few jump out at me right now.

"War Dawn" takes the Arielbots back to meet Orion Pax, Ariel and Dion before they become Optimus, Elita and likely Magnus. There is definitely some material here, but I doubt we see a Dion update since he was a recent TFCC toy. Elita-1 would be very interesting, though I'm not sure what mold they would use. Orion Pax is a good possibility as well.

We also have the 3rd season episode "Forever is a long time in coming" where the Quintessons try to alter history by yanking Alpha Trion out of the past just before a big battle. Blaster and a few others end up going back in time, and we meet a young Alpha Trion. This gives us some good material, we could see an update on Guardian Robots, a young Alpha Trion, and maybe even some female autobots like AT's companion. Again though, I'm not sure what molds would be used.

As some have mentioned, we also have "Five Faces of Darkness" where Rodimus enters the Matrix and sees the history of the rebellion against the Quintessons as well as the beginnings of the war between the Autobots and the Decepticons. There is a lot of material here, a few characters appear on screen just for moments. This episode discusses the practice of passing the Matrix from one leader to another. There are a few characters here that could be used. I think this is less likely though, as many of these characters never got a toy, much less an update.

Of course we have the original More than meets the Eye miniseries, which starts us on Cybertron with different alt modes, where we see Soundwave, Wheeljack, Bumblebee, Acid Rain and Sunstorm. Those could all be possibilities. These seem unlikely however, as the seekers saw some releases back around 2008 or so. And I'm not sure which molds would work for Wheeljack, Bumblebee and Soundwave with the different alt modes.

Those are the main episodes that jump out in my mind. I'm sure there are others.

In short, there is a LOT of material out there. My guess is that we are seeing a reference to a storyline that delved into the past, rather than a piece of toy history. So we may see some old characters, Alpha Trion, Orion Pax and Ariel are very good possibilities.

And if you are an 80's fan, one character will be the MUST HAVE Transformer of the year! Trailbreaker, Gears and Brawn... are NOT being done by us. They need the good ol' Hasbro Classics treatment first and foremost... We'll take care of some of the other, equally awesome characters!

This statement supports the idea that Botcon will use classics molds for the next set. We have a very specific reference to the classics molds, and the naming of 3 particular G1 characters. So in all likelihood we are looking at a G1 theme for the next set. We also need to look at existing molds, since Botcon history tells us that Botcon sets are generally repaints of existing molds. So I think folks are correct to look at existing Classics molds, and trying to figure out which of these molds could be repainted or slightly modified to become a new character.

The reference about the "80s fan" could be pointing to the 1980's Transformers. However, I think that this is more of a broad statement, where it is referencing the 80's in general. What was popular in the 80's? Big hair, metal bands, leg warmers, trapper keepers, walkmans, large stereos . . . hmm. I think that several fans have hit on a great idea that we have a strong suggestion that we will get a Soundwave, repainted from the Perceptor mold. Of course this Soundwave would not transform into a stereo, but we're still in the ballpark. We could also see the Perceptor mold repainted into Roadbuster.

So in sum, I think that we will likely see a set comprised of five characters from a storyline that refers to the "distant" past. It would be interesting to get a set with a Guardian Robot, Alpha Trion, Orion Pax, Ariel and Dion. Or you could switch it up to another reference to the past where we get G1 characters like Soundwave, maybe the jumpstarters, and some deluxe autobots like Whirl and Roadbuster. The more I think about it, the more likely it seems to me that we'll get something like the Deluxe Autobots and the jumpstarters. If the next set is G1, then I'm definitely excited.

I think the boxset will contain the Jumpstarters, they haven't got an updated release and they will fit nicely next to Runamuck and Runabout of the Transformers Club.

Sorry man, but Brawn, Roadbuster and Whirl have had figures in recent years, so that kinda rules them out. Topspin and Twin Twist...maybe. I guess if they are considering movie Topspin...

There are so few G1 characters that have not had some sort of update or homage in the past 25+ years that the list really should be a very short one.
...and yet here we still are :lol

I believe they said guys that are not in the movie AND figures that are not licensed vehicles are up for grabs. So guys like Bludgeon, Brawn, Dirge, Terradive, Tomahawk, Highbrow, etc are all fair game.

No, it means FunPub thinks there's a good chance they will. Or even just that they are so popular that they don't want to do them as a club exclusive, preferring to wait for whenever Hasbro tackles them.

I got this answer on Twitter as well.
