I think this might indicate that there's less cooperation between Hasbro and Bay's crew than previously thought.

I think there's a good mixture of both. Bee's transforms, as does Ratchet's in the background in DOTM. Not to mention technically Optimus, Sideswipe and Dino's blades aren't handheld either.

Alot of transformers have built in weapons, (I.E. Bumblebee, Ratchet, Ironhide, Prime, TF1 Megatron, Starscream, Brawl, Mixmaster, etc...).

    Transformers have hand-held weapons because

    A) They currently don't have any weapons built into their body (I.E. DOTM Megatron).

    B) They feel the need to use excessive amounts of weapons to get the job done, so they use plentiful amounts of hand-held weapons (I.E. Prime, Ironhide).

    C) They're trigger-happy maniacs (I.E. Ironhide).

Actually the Protoforms have machine guns in their wrists along with the hand held rifle

Hmm, you're right. I haven't watched ROTF alot. However, that certain model of Protoform has a hand-held weapon. I'll go with DOTM Megatron then.

Tons of pros and cons (no pun intended) regarding weapons. Personally, I am a huge fan of the handheld weapons, especially Ironhide's new ones and Optimus and Megatron's cannons.

Kind of related, despite the fact that I liked them, why use ships when...well, you know?

Acid Storm, and Ramjet are dead, Thundercrackers the only seeker still suckin air in the comics, and I'm not 100% sure on his existence either. They just were never prominent in this series at all..Having Blackout,Megatron, and Starscream all flyers in the first movie wasn't too bad though

    Hand-held weapons are a legacy from G1.

Even the first movie has them. Remember Optimus Prime battling Megatron at the end? He takes his rifle out from his back. Even puts it again on his back once, then he takes out once again when he gets up after Megatron takes him down with his fussion cannon.

So, neither in ROTF or DOTM was the first time they appeared in the movies.

im honestly surprise someone thinks its odd. G1 guys complain about everything including non handheld weapons. In my opinion however, i think the diversity of both is a nice touch.
