    Remember when Optimus was funny?

    ***THIS IS NOT G1!!!!!***

There. Got that out of the way...

If they're going to go through the effort of employing Cullen to evoke classic Prime, I wish someone would include all of OP's traits that made him such a classically endearing character.

On top of being an inspiring leader and total badass, Optimus always had a pithy quip at the ready.

    Anybody else miss that?

Yes. I loved his trash talking and humor in the G1 cartoon. I miss that in the current incarnations.

    I do. A lot.

Part of what I enjoyed about G1 Prime is that for as legendary a figure as he was, it was pretty clear that he was also still one of the guys, that his fellow Autobots weren't just soldiers, but his friends and that there was more to him than just being Autobot Leader.

The Prime's that Cullen's voiced since then and its probably the writing staff and voice director as much as anybody, seem to be much more focused on playing up his iconic stature as some paragon of justice. But on a personal level, he's hard to relate to.

I agree G1 or not it definitely adds a little shine to his character. Doesn't have to be a stand up comic or anything, a little zing here and there would add some flavor for sure.

Prime Prime is kinda boring, so yes, I'd like to see a lighter side of Prime come back. He didn't even bring Raf that snowball.

if i recall optimus primal had a good sence of humor to him as well.

but most OPs that i can think of didnt seem to have more personality now that i think of it. they all seem "semi robotic" compared to G1 prime who would yes play basket ball and watch earth TV and would often be fasinated with things. like sometimes his atitude would be more "okay lets go check this out." or "no its okay you learned your lesson, no you can make up for it .. etc etc".

I also noticed that Cullen dosent voice Prime in The Movies and TF Prime the same way he used to in G1 he wasnt saying stuff like " I am Optimus Prime and I send this message to any surviving Autobots"

Animated Prime was anything but "semi robotic"

Yes. There seems to be a trend now with making Optimus Prime an overly serious and formal character.

I had my nephew staying with me this week--he's 6-- and we watched BW and Armada completely.. Optimus was funny in Armada as well, had a few good chuckles with the humans and bots.

As for his characterization in TFPrime..the writers decide what he's going to say and the Voice Director decides how he should say it...so they need to make some changes first.. but most of us who watch this series have noticed that it's much darker than past series, they sorta set the tone with "Primes don't party".

Maybe Optimus will still get the snowball or play basketball with the bots one of these days.

Well a big difference between movie prime and G1 prime is that they wanted to keep a series running. G1 was an 80's saturday morning kids show. Movie prime only had 7-8ish hour of on screen time and during that time, the earth was in pretty much constant peril. DOTM especially showed a more human, emotionally-torn side of Optimus Prime, a time during which he didn't have many reasons to be witty or funny.

Prime Prime is the imposing father figure that doesn't get enough screen time to be funny :p

Edit: After Prime episode "Partners," Optimus Prime is a triple changer I think...truck/bot/fortune cookie

The G1 cartoon was a kid show. Everybody was goofy. The modern movies and TF: Prime are more oriented towards teens.

As masishadow said, DOTM did a good job showing Optimus Prime's more emotional side. Even when he said his last words to Megatron, you could tell he wasn't being smug bastard. He was angry and a little reluctant, and for good reason. I'd like to see more like this. I liked him before, but I really felt for Optimus in DOTM.

With TFP Optimus, if you look closely you can see he really doesn't think he's fit to be a leader but he tries his best. He has a lot of emotions bottled up. I really can't see him joking around. However, we haven't seen much of him. I won't judge his character too much until the supposed Megatron backstory that's coming up.

Me, too. I miss the days when Optimus could be a fun guy, like in BW or Animated.

Definitely. Optimus Prime in G1 was some kinda awesome John Wayne hero, whereas in TF: Prime he's a boring old grandpa, and in the Movie he's a sociopath

Dunno. I like the stoic leader more. Tho if they made him a bit more Gandfalf like (stoic and he could crack a joke or two) I would appreciate it more.

Him groaning during the soap opera in G1 made me :lol .

I like his movie character. "What is with you?" and "Oops, my bad." made me crack up a bit at him trying to act like the humans, and the hiding scene made the movie for me! I also love the way he was portrayed in DotM, it was great for his character.

Prime Prime really needs some character development though. And fast.

I actually thought G1 Prime was really boring most of the time. Rodimus was fun! Primal was beyond fun. :lol
