... would have been the most incredibly naive and costly thing Prime could ever have done.

    Let's look at Meg's history:

Betrayed the Transformers civilization and plunged them all into a war that killed almost all of the Autobots and countless Decepticons and ruined Cybertron. Motivation? Personal power.

Pursued the All-Spark relentlessly across the galaxy in order to claim it and use its power to destroy and enslave other races - plus wipe out the Autobot survivors. Motivation? Personal power.

Allied with The Fallen and attempted to destroy the entire solar system, killing 5+ billion sentient lifeforms. Motivation? Personal power.

Tore Jazz in half. Sneak-killed Optimus Prime from behind in the forest.

Forged a deal/truce with Sentinel, one Sentinel went for to save Cybertron - the planet Megatron had pretty much destroyed for his own personal power. His Decepticons then slaughtered Chicago, murdering civilians in the streets by the thousands. The plan? Enslave and largely kill/destroy 5+ billion sentient lifeforms to rebuild his stolen empire.

Betrayed the last guy he made a truce with by backstabbing and attacking him right in front of Prime. Sure, nice inadvertent side-effect for Prime was that it took Sentinel away from executing Prime, but Megs did not "save Prime" (not his intent) - he attacked Sentinel by surprise in order to betray him in that truce.

So now we have Megs, after having done all of the above attrocities and mere moments after betraying the last guy he had a truce with, call for a truce so that he could be in charge (personal power, tyranny).

And I'm sure conditions and plans of Meg's truce would have included leaving the humans alone. He's totally cool with being equals/subservient to humans and not at all trying to wipe them out in some attempt to return the Decepticons to glory and dominance, with him as tyrant.

... and Prime was supposed to say "OK, put 'er there ole' chum!"?

So instead Prime says "No way you lying, betraying, mass-murdering sack o' crap" and attacks. He lands the first blow too, and it's a doozy. Only blow needed, thanks to Meg's badly damaged head. Han shot first in this battle and won.

So I guess I don't totally get why some people think Prime should have accepted a truce from Megs after all that, under those conditions, and with a guy who had 0% chance of doing anything OTHER than betraying, killing, and then some more genocide for breakfast.

But yeah, Prime totally should have shook Megs hand and enjoyed that there truce. That would have gone great.

As much as i love the truce idea it's too unrealistic.

Why is that it would work so much better in the cartoons than the movies.

Agreed. I mean it's not hard to hear the mockery in Megatron's voice when he offered it. How anyone could actually think he was serious is pretty surprising.

Never read the comic/novel (wherever it came from), but the truce seems pretty far-fetched. I think some people just wanted a remote possibility of continuation in the movie series.

The only way a truce would be pausible if something or someone more threatening than the Decepticons showed up and the Autobots and cons would have to join forces.

It sounds good on paper but would not have fit with the way the characters were portrayed in the movies. Megatron is just an evil maniac in the films with no humanity whatsoever.

Yep totally agree. It just doesn't work in context with all the shit Megatron has pulled both on screen and all the stuff he has supposedly done on Cybertron in the past.
If Optimus had said yes he would have been an idiot.

Plus that whole "Time to find out." shot was completely badass.

"Now... We need a truce. All I wanted was to be back in charge."

I don't understand how people see this so-called truce as legitimate either.

Knowing that Sentinel was the one who made those two co-rulers and, out of jealousy, Megs slipped control away from Optimus little by little until he was too far along in his plans to stop, meeting the demands of Megatron's "truce" would just put them right back where they all started. Actually, it would be worse since Megatron is no longer jealous and just an outright megalomaniac.

"Besides, who would you be without me, Prime?"

His last words prove the whole thing is a mockery, as Opticron said. He really thinks that Optimus needs him, that all Transformers need him.

When people call this a "truce" that Optimus unjustly turns down, my eye actually twitches. Megatron's words are bullcrap straight out of the gate.

Fans are bitching because he didn't accept a truce and killed Megatron. If he had accepted a truce, they'd be bitching because that would be insane. Either way, he made the right decision.

    Obviously Prime believes the same.

Hooray! One more person gets it! Except the thing a lot of people don't seem to get is in the film Megatron was talking to Sentinel, not Optimus about the truce and such. Optimus just butted in the conversation and relieved Megs of what was left of his dome.

Wait, were people seriously thinking that Megatron was offering a proper truce when he was mocking Sentinel?

    Really?

    Anytime! :)

I've seen it on these boards. There's been some talk about how "OMG Optimus brutically backstabbed and murdered poor Megatron who had just saved his life and was begging for a truce and peace and OMG Optimus is a meanie". Personally I think whichever way you slice it (mocking offer of truce, re-offer of truce to Sentinel, or straight offer of truce to Optimus), it was simply a non-starter of an idea and Prime was well within his rights to charge in battle at him.

Also, some folks have been saying Megs "saved" Optimus from Sentinel. He did, but not intentionally. Megs' goal was to attack/betray Sentinel. The fact that he interrupted Sentinel from executing Prime was, I'm sure, completely accidental.

Yes, a lot of people do, very much so, its actually kinda tragic. No less than 7 or 8 threads bashing Prime for killing Megatron.

    THANK YOU!!!

I get so frustrated with all the people posting stuff like "durrr Megatron wanted to be friends but then Prime kills him for no reason". Megatron was NOT requesting a truce. Anyone who thought he was has never heard of the character Megatron. He just wanted Prime to spare him for that moment so he could get away unharmed and lead the Decepticons again and come back with some other evil scheme to kill everyone.

To bad for him, Prime is no-one's bitch.

At that Point, Megatron had nothing, He wanted to be in charge again but of what?? there was nothing left But a few decepticons across the earth. Cybertron was destroyed as with many of the decepticon forces...hmmm

Megatron Should have kneeled  before Prime and pledged his allegiance to Prime.

MEGATRON- "Optimus, I have failed all of us my old friend,...so much Lost because of me and my deception, forgive me.."

OPTIMUS- "I forgive you Megatron....BUT CYBERTRON DOESNT!"

THEN Prime kills him with an AXE to the face!!
