Michael Bay writes to theater projectionists-IndieWire I'm not sure if I'm buying the response from the Projectionist's Guild, but it's a laugh! I also haven't seen any 3d movies, so has lack of brightness been a problem for recent releases?
So Bay writes a polite letters asking them to get it right, and they respond with a self important letter complaining about Bay's self important letter. Nice to see that my place of employment isn't the only one where people waste a ton of time on pointless bullshit.
I can see where those guys might have taken umbrage, but frankly the only way they come off as the good guy after such an unsubtle, rude return letter is if you're a near-rabid Bay-hater (i.e. 70% of the film-geek Internet community). If you can't write for shit and you have no sense of perspective, the classiest move is just to ignore the provocation. Instead, they gave him free publicity and looked like tools on the false assumption that anyone gives a shit about the pride of professional projectionists. It's not always fun to have a job where no one thinks of you unless they are blaming you for screwing up, but that's the reality (and LOTS of people in the film industry have those jobs).
that response letter is just dripping in sarcasm wtf? personally im totally with Bay. all the movies ive ever seen in 3D are always dark and color-less. great to see Bay do things in post production to try and reduce that and if its the projectors fault then it seems logical for someone to say "hey these things are dark, you mind brightening 'em up a bit?" i really dont understand the guys reply. seems unnecessarily snarky and just a ploy for exposure good job!
I'm calling BS. Not only is there no 'Projectionist Guild of America' (Google it) but the guys last name who wrote the reply letter is Fake.
I just wish they would have actually sent the film to my IMAX theater. With all the "in IMAX 3D" marketing that this movie has been given, you'd think they'd make sure that every IMAX theater got the freaking film that they are advertising!!! Now, I'm stuck seeing it in a RealD theater with an empty IMAX auditorium down the hall.
It's obviously a joke, but yes, it has been a widespread issue in theaters where they use the bulbs at a percentage of what brightness is recommended in order to save on the lifetime of the expensive bulbs. But in the case of 3D films, its much worse because the glasses already have a dimming effect. I have heard this reported more than a few times over the years. I understand why a theater would want to save on costs, but it makes the 3D experience awful IMO.
It is a pretty crappy thing for theaters to do. A 3D movie in Canada is like $16 plus tax, why pay the premium if they don't even show it how it was intended.
Yeah, I don't think it's real. Which is a shame. I was looking forward to writing my own letter to Mr. Fake discussing all the times I've sat in a theater for 3 minutes with no picture, or no sound, or half the screen out of focus for half the movie, or there's a giant blotch in the middle of the screen, or etc., or etc, or etc., or ... Or how when I screened my new movie in LA last month they got the aspect ratio wrong and the projectionist argued with me about it in the projection both even though it was very obvious something was wrong. (Or the time before when I screened there and DID try to check the film before the screening only to be yelled at by the projectionist- part of why I didn't pre check it this time) BTW, as a shameless plug, here's a link to the trailer for the new movie YouTube - Here's the Kicker trailer.mov‏ Anyway, got my tickets for 9 tomorrow!!!!
