I did the Wheeljack leg mod last night using a Reveal The Shield Turbo Tracks that I found on clearance. There are a few different ways you can do this mod that involve Dremmeling the Wheeljack parts, but I didn't want to damage him so I sacrificed a Tracks instead. The final result is pretty rough, but that's fine for me because it's on the rear of the legs and it's just for display. If you want to do a cleaner, more professional job I recommend using a Dremmel to finely grind and shape the parts, rather than hacking away at the plastic with a pair of pliers, which is what I did. You might also want to add a lick of paint to cover up the blue plastic. Took about an hour to do. Anyway, I posted the pics here: TOYBO: Wheeljack Leg Modification
Ha! I just did almost this same thing last night... interesting! It didn't occur to me to cut the Tracks shin plate apart to allow the wheel to still fold up. I just did a straight swap, Tracks' shin plates for Wheeljack's, and then I swapped the foot structure that has the folding wheel on it. It requires punching some pins (and then swapping the footpad and front grill) but they're short pins and come out really easily. The only cutting I did was removing the Tracks knee-pads with a hobby knife to improve the knee-bend. Because I swapped the parts, WJ's front wheel stays in the wheel-well, and doesn't fold down anymore, though i don't find it hurts his overall look. Your method allows you to keep the folding-down wheel though. Oh, also it meant I had to swap Tracks and WJ's shoulders so the front and rear rims would match. My short-legged Tracks is now destined to be repainted into a Battlecharger Runabout, or lightly modded into Throttlebot Freeway, so he's not a total sacrifice. zmog
I haven't taken wheeljack or tracks apart to see but are the legs so different you couldn't just swap the thighs/sliding mechanism out? Silly question but I've not taken United Wheeljack apart to find out.
Yup I tried it and you have to do this mod to do the swap. I tried just swapping the upper leg but that wont work without mods too. Great work btw!
Specifically, the Tracks shin-plate has additional support runners that keep the longer leg shank firmly in place. If you put the Tracks shanks into the Wheeljack legs, they seem like they should work fine, but once you tighten the screws, the legs still flop around loose. Kind of annoying... because of that small detail, a lot of extra work is required. zmog
As soon as I get some Styrene in.....I should have a tutorial soon on how to do this leg mod.....without a dremel Only....it does involve...pin removal.....
The more I see of this mod, the more curious I am...I haven't opened my WJ yet, but if I do, I'd consider attempting this. Great job!
You have a couple of options to achieve the extended legs. Once you get the parts from Tracks it's easy enough to fit them onto Wheeljack and then figure out which way you want to do it. Post pics though once you're done!
Sure, no problem! I don't have pics of the variations of the mod - just the one I did. But here they are anyway:
did the same thing for mine. i wouldn't recommend doing this mod. i wish i just used wheeljack's though. it looks easy enough to add putty on it.
Not bad, I think this nice, less head ache and at the same time you can make a new custom for the extra bot
If you swap the shins from Tracks in and swap out the foot assembly with the swing bar for the front wheel, rather than cutting, you can give WJ his longer legs, and still have a complete (though shorter) Tracks bot left over. I almost did the cutting on my version too, because I usually avoid punching the pins if I can... but in this case, the pins are really easy to remove, so it's worth it to switch the feet instead. Also way easier than drilling and radically rebuilding Wheeljack's leg shanks to extend them. zmog
So far this looks like the best and easiest idea yet for fixinf WJ legs.....As soon as I find a spare tracks I will definately try this.
Took me a while to figure out what you guys were doing this mod for... the height. With all the chatter about how the wheels fold differently, can anyone post a pic showing the difference? Or describe it? His proportions DO look really much nicer with the height. Nice job to the lot of you guys.
