I know it's been just a little while since I posted, but I'm pretty sure there have been some who have ended up taking this on. Would anyone care to fulfill the above request?
Hah, I remember picking up one of those TRU Jetfire repaints a few days after reading this thread. Never -did- get around to picking up a Tidal Wave though. ^^; As far as step-by-step photoss go, I'm usually kinda nutty enough to just start hacking away at just the first hint of info, but I won't disagree that a series of step-by-step shots would be helpful.
I actually began this mod and realized that it wasn't Classics Jetfire that was needed, but the Cyb one. Then I went out and bought a big parts lot with a Cyb jetfire in it (as my tidal wave was already cut up) I just finished moving, but this project is on the short list, at least in terms of the leg mods
Yeah, that's exactly how I tend to do it... which is why you never see in-progress photos from me. I'm too busy just muddling through trying to figure out whether it will work! zmog
Thanks for telling us how to do this! I'd actually been half planning to use Tidalwave as Broadside, but Tidalwave's lack of articulation and shoulders kept making me change my mind, these fixes will make the character REALLY WORK I can't wait to see your final product on him!! He looks GREAT
I just thought I'd bump the request here for anyone who's done this modification. Thanks for all you contribute, gang!
Does it still allow to be connected with Megatron? especially if both are modded? Since I got that combo in a lot some time ago and is collecting dust
The Megatron/Tidal Wave combo should be unaffected by the leg mod. Not sure about Megatron's leg mod. I forget if I had to cut anything important inside his waist area. I pretty much tore that area apart, but I don't remember how much of it was actually necessary. Sorry. The shoulder mod might not work with it though, since it does interfere with the Supercarrier mode. I haven't tested it with Megs though... never liked that mode. zmog
I know it's been a while, but I just thought I'd check back in on this thread. If anyone has anything they'd like to ask, contribute, etc., certainly feel free to do so. If you guys feel that this can be useful as a tutorial, please lmk here. What do you feel needs added, if anything? SMOG, thanks again so much for sharing your work
thnx for sharing... found a 2euro tidal wave... missing a thumb now for a cyb.jetfire but there lot harder to find mostly MINTY and that's to unpleasant for my wallet, since I crashed my car yesterday!!!
this is awesome! i am seriously thinking about getting both these figures to do a custom broadside. only problem is the price. i am able to get a cheapish tiidal wave but the cybertron jetfire is proving difficult to justify just for the leg mod pieces. i was therefore wondering if smog or anyone else knows if it is possible to do this mod with the cybertron/galaxy force optimus prime leg/thigh pieces? I have one of them lying around and in pictures they LOOK similar. any help/advice would be great!
Hm. It might be different in the Netherlands, but Cybertron Jetfires were quite common over here for a while. Remember, that mold was repainted at least 2 more times in the US market. Even a junker version will do, as long as the legs are intact... I used to see lots of those in Ebay lots, missing a wing or whatever. Sorry... Cybertron Prime's legs won't cut it. They're way fatter, and don't have the necessary connector below the knee. I haven't tested it, but I have some guesses... Energon Ironhide or Energon Sandstorm's legs MIGHT work, though I worry their lower leg shank is too long. Also, it's possible that Classics Silverbolt legs could be used... though they might be a bit too short. All I can really confirm is that Cybertron Jetfire's legs DO work with a minimal bit of modding, but I haven't tested any alternatives. zmog
thanks for the reply smog! i guess that's the trouble with only looking at pics, can;t fully work out the scale or the design mechanics of the joints. your expert insight was greatly appreciated =)
No prob! The thing with replacement legs is that they need to have a sort of "loop" socket below the knee to connect functionally to the lower leg sections, allowing them to bend sideways for the transformation. Ideally you want something that has a rotating joint in the thigh or below the knee, and a proper knee joint. Tidal Wave's regular legs of course have neither, which is why he's so stiff. Between Tidal Wave and Armada Megatron, those Cybertron Jetfire legs really come in handy, so if anyone finds an alternative, it would be fantastic to hear about it before the world Cybertron Jetfire reserves dwindle. We've already seen what the Devastator industry has done to the availability of Unicron legs. zmog
You would think with 2 repaints of Jetfire and a fairly meh mold altogether, it would be easy to find him for cheap. For my newest custom, I had to resort to buying Cybertron Crumplezone since his thighs are similar. With that or Cybertron Prime, you have to mod the connecting point at the knee like SMOG says, takes drilling and sanding. It's worth the 20.00 I saved.
It's definitely cool to see some more of you guys coming along and posting your thoughts and such. I'd love to get some more progress photos for a full-fledged tutorial
i could dissassembly the leg-part of my TW and could take pics when this is enough for a tutorial if not: send me a TW and i'll do another one if you wanna see mine: http://www.tfw2005.com/boards/radic...lated-leader-supreme-tidal-wave-finished.html
