Good news for those who missed it the first time. Me, however, the only way I'd buy the series again would be if it was a BD release.

Sounds like it has some bonus material, but not all the extras. Problem is, which items are considered the extras? Are we talking the magnets and episode guide booklet? Just curious.

And as for seeing G1 released on Blu-Ray:

I found a pre-owned Matrix set at FYE's for $80, which I am very happy with and was very glad I waited. I would rather have the Matrix edition than this new re-issue, even though that packaging really is nice.

@Voiceroy, that doesn't really clear up the bonus/extras issue for me. I used to have the Matrix set, but can't remember what was exclusive to it. That article didn't exactly go into detail.

No offense, but Blu-Ray versions of 20+ year old cartoons are not going to look that great. I'm sure the people that own the Blu-Ray version of the '86 Animated Movie can attest to that. You can only upscale that older stuff so much.

No offense but the resolution of a motion picture from any year is higher than anything available in packaged media. A 4K, frame by frame restoration of a movie such as Casablanca is as good as anything released today. And that movie is almost 70 years old. The question is will SF take the time to remaster this set properly. If not, they are no better than the DVD's.

Here's some info on the subject.

I've held out on buying a lot of dvds in the past few years, but when it comes to old TV shows, I just go right ahead. The master tapes are all standard def anyway.

The only difference I could see Blu-Ray making would be the possibility of less compression artefacts.

yeah, but that's film. As I understand it, most TV shows, they kept the masters on Beta tapes. Even though many were shot on film(most animated shows were), they were often edited on video.

Maybe but the comparison the 1986 movie on Bluray is inaccurate. And I'm fairly certain the masters can be re-scanned and restored to a level that is superior to the limitations of DVD.

    According to Amazon:

    3 discs in S1
    4 discs in S2P1
    4 discs in S2P2
    4 discs in S3/S4
    -----------------
    15 discs total

    16 discs in Matrix set

Looks like one disc of extras is gone.

I didn't say anything about the 1986 movie, but since that was a theatrical release, they would've been able to rescan the original film negative at a higher resolution. It's a different situation with a tv show if the master copies were on standard definition video to begin with.

If Shout! goes back to the film for Transformers... it will look fantastic in HD. Sure it will have the same errors that Rhino had... but so what (that was never a big deal to me anyway).

Rhino used film for their remaster, not master tapes. So yeah, there's that.

Okay, didn't know that. Anyone know if it was originally filmed in 16mm or 35mm?
