Square-Enix is releasing to PSP the "Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection" game. It will feature the most updated version of the game (but not the graphics from the DS release) and will also include "The After Years" sequel previously exclusive to the Wii in downloadable content.

This is all in celebration of the game's 20 year anniversary.

With this release, Final Fantasy IV is now the most re-done, re-released Final Fantasy game of all time in the United States :p

(IV - Super Nintendo, PSOne, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, PSP)

    compared to:
(I - Nintendo, PSOne, PSP, iPhone)
    (II - PSOne, PSP, iPhone)
    (III - NDS)
(V - PSOne, Game Boy Advance)
(VI - Super Nintendo, Game Boy Advance)
    (VII - PSOne)
    (VIII - PSOne)
    (IX - PSOne)
    (X - PS2)
    (X-2 - PS2)
    (XI - PC)
    (XII - PS2)
    (XIII - PS3)
    (XIV - PC)

Long live the best Final Fantasy game ever! :p

One of my favorite games, but, I've played it to death. I also played the first of the after years and it just didn't live up to the original, besides the graphics and sounds, which were just ripped from the original.

And it will live forever. I see a remake of the DS version for the 3DS in 3D. Along with VI. Then there's gonna be remakes of VII, VIII, and IX showing up on the PSP2.

I STILL have to finish The After Years. It's good seeing it be re-released.

Were the DS graphics significantly better?

The DS graphics were entirely 3D. They pretty much looked exactly like the 2D art brought out to be really low poly 3D. Saying it was better depends on preference- I don't think it was worth it for them to go through the game and just make it all 3D while keeping it painstakingly close to the 2D art. I would say the best aspect was simply the more fluid animations.

So a bit of a surprise.

Included in this game is ANOTHER sequel, "Final Fantasy IV: Interlude", which is a 3 to 4 hour long "bridge" game between Final Fantasy IV and The After Years, which (duh) attempts to bridge the storyline between the two games.

Beating the games in concession is apparently rewarded with special stuff being unlocked (as opposed to going straight to the After Years, etc.).

Game is out tomorrow! Let's all play with each other! ... wait

I have the PS1 version of IV though I'm still tempted to pick this one up. I bought the PSP versions of I & II yesterday so now I finally have every main release numbered title (except 14, but it doesn't count as it aint out on consoles yet :p ). Yay!

I wonder why no love has been given to VI. It may be a misconception that it's an absolute fan favorite, but speaking to FF fans, this doesn't seem to be so far from the mark, that Square hasn't even at least attempted a remake. Maybe it's a much bigger game to recreate?

I've been wondering that myself. I've met few people who've played FF6 and don't consider it a masterpiece. It's possible that it wasn't one of the more popular ones in Japan, but I have no idea how it did over there. But I will say FF4 was not a very long game overall, so it's possible 6 is just a whole lot more problematic in remaking due to its size. Either way I would buy a remake in any form for FF6, but I've had my fill of FF4 for now.
