hello im a new transformers collator (i have never started my collation) and i don't no were to start, im 17 and i been a fan since i was young i mean my dad has old videos of transformers gen 1. So its in my blood so what im asking is should i start at the gen 1 transformer toys are go with the ROTF transformer toys. I need help on this one
Start with classics. You get the best of both worlds. Personally I only buy what I like. I also try to keep the repaints down and same character names unless figures are totally different. But before someone says somethin mean this is the wrong spot to start this thread. Have fun collecting.
ooh ok thanks i really did not no were i should have posted this so that is why i put it in here because it referees to collating
I say G1 and Classics, but it depends on what your preference is. Better to get Generations at retail price at the moment.
ditto^^^...G1 is to me the mecca of transformers and i feel no collection can be truely a transformers collection w/o some G1 thrown in there...and with classics/henkei/universe/generatons and now united ya get G1 w/ modern twists and more possability...bestof both worlds if ya ask me...
The Classics/Henkei/Generations is the best way to start. You do get the best of both worlds. My Personal opinion, getting your hands on a G1 Optimus Prime is not a bad way to start collecting G1 figures. Good luck buddy.
I say start here. Go to the resources page and look at the different lines to find which one(s) interest you the most. Each line has it's good points and bad points. (ex. Alternators were the greatest for vehicle accuracy but took a lot longer to transform that most other lines. G1 toys were bricks, but I love those bricks. There is just something satisfying about the accurate vehicle modes, the die cast parts and the rubber tires.) Personally, I started "collecting" with Robots in Disguise. I was a kid in the 80's, so I had many, many G1, but those were for playing, not collecting. I got back because Robots in Disguise went back to the accurate vehicles and rubber tires. Nostalgia kicked in. Just find something you like and go from there. It is your collection and you are going to have it for a while, so buy whatever you want to buy. And let your dad 'play' with them from time to time. Heck, if you get him involved, he may chip in and help you get some of the more expensive/rarer stuff.
To me, how much you have to spend on TFs dictates what you'll be able to buy and how often. If your spending budget is very limited, shop at local thrift stores and look for loose figures. Check out my hauls/collection thread linked in my signature line below to see the kind of stuff I've found for cheap. Granted, these finds are often missing parts and accessories, but for me it's just the thrill of finding a great bargain -- like a Unicron figure for under $2. As for what's currently in stores, there are a lot of G1 tributes among the Generations toyline. Those you should be able to find without much difficulty. Ditto for the Power Core Combiners toyline -- which is one of the most fun concepts Hasbro has done since they gave us the Constructicons/Devastator in the 80s, and it's Combiners as their own toyline! And I love the Classic figures as well, but still in the package they can be pricey on the second-hand market unless you buy them loose. Same goes for Transformers Animated figures, which have already become favorites for me because the toys look like the TV show -- something that Hasbro hasn't had the best track record with in the past. And G1 toys, even loose, can be expensive. For a new collector, I'd suggest buying toys that are reissued. I don't buy overseas Japanese imports like Henkei (Classics) and Binaltech/Alternity (Alternators) because they tend to be expensive, but they are generally better than their U.S. versions. To date, my favorite toys are the toylines from Masterpiece, Alternators, Classics/Generations, TF Animated, Beast Wars, Robots in Disguise and G1 (and in that order too from top to bottom). And if I could only collect one toyline, it would be the Masterpiece series.
