So if I was still a teen and I make fun of Justin Bieber fans, will that be considered bullying? I think bullying is an attack on an individual, not on their like on a TV, movie, music or toy. It's just teasing. It's been happening for hundreds of years.

You know, I get made fun of by people within this fandom for pretty silly things like spoiling a children's cartoon and I live with it. But this little girl is six, an age when people making fun of you is pretty big. Really, I fail to see what welfare has to do with it, saying that bullying is wrong (because it is) isn't the worst thing in the world.

That's right guys, I'm white knighting people I don't even know now. [IMG]

I never thought of it as a boys thing, I figured Star Wars was without gender bias. I agree though, a boy would be taking hell for liking Barbie, but that's not exactly a surprise.

    :lol

Thats the thing with bullies, they target people who destroy their preconceived notions of what should be.

She's six you jackass. At that age, your parents (or older siblings) ARE your sole defenders and caretakers.

Now I don't know if this is news worthy, and on its own it isn't. However when people respond like they did, people take notice.

There will always be the 'bullying problem,' regardless the programs mommies, board of directors, principals, and teachers come up with. For a child the best thing to do for them is access their personal problem and decide what needs to be done. If it's severe consider sending you kid to another school, if it's something up with your kid for wtf reasons, good luck

If I ever have kids, they'll have karate from age 3mths. Teach them control and respect but also insure when time comes, they'll sting like a bee and bitch slap like chuck norris

    Exactly.

I can speak from firsthand experience that what this girl went through is bullying AND harmful, period. I was bullied from Kindergarten on for being a tomboy, and for having the audacity to like things that were only for "boys". Lo and behold, years later, I'm still that "tomboy", going into a male dominated career field, and loving hockey, the color blue, and Transformers. The crap I went through as a kid had a large impact on my development, and when you're SIX years old, it's a big deal, and you DEPEND on your parents at that age to help you and protect you. I had a lot of things going on at home, but believe me it didn't help when I went to school and dealt with bullies teasing me simply for what toys I liked, or what books I read, or what tv shows I watched, or because I didn't like the color "pink". I don't know about any of you, but if MY son is teased or bullied merely for what he likes, I'm going to be pissed, just like this mother was. That's not wrong of me, that's me knowing that kids can be cruel and I'm not going to sit back and say that my son needs to respond with violence or whatever. No, my son or this little girl are NOT the issue - those idiots bullying her, and their closed-minded idiot parents or whoever is TEACHING them this crap, are the issue.

I can tell you that what some of you seem to be implying is just "harmless teasing" is anything but. Her mom may be a helicopter parent (because she blogs? Hardly...), but until we teach our CHILDREN better, and that this type of behavior is not acceptable, these things will still happen, and it's frankly not okay, period. Using straw-man arguments aren't going to change the fact that this little girl shouldn't be bullied for what she likes, and the only reason she is being bullied is because someone is teaching those little boys that it's ONLY okay that girls ONLY like pink and "girly" things and wear frilly little dresses, and that it's ONLY okay that boys ONLY like "blue", Star Wars, and boy things. Yeah, I call BS on that. That little girl isn't wrong for what she likes - those kids are flat out wrong for teasing her for what she likes. Sitting back and blaming the mom for blogging about it, and that the mom and girl need to just "deal" with it is flat out bullshit. How about we teach our kids that gender norms don't matter? If my son like Transformers or Barbies, I don't give a flying eff, he's still my kid and at least he's secure in himself and what he likes. Other kids don't have the right to tell him otherwise, and shame on THEM if they tease him. I don't like pink, Barbies or Strawberry Shortcake. So should all of you guys here tell me that I'm a dumbass, horrible and stupid for liking Transformers, hockey, going into law enforcement and anything that's not remotely considered "girly" by our gender-rigid society? Hah!

At six years old, according to some people here, this little girl is supposed to just buck up and shut up, and react with VIOLENCE towards her bullies, and that she shouldn't rely on her mother to stand up for her against ignorant children who are being taught stereotypical and WRONG rigid gender norms by closed-minded parents? WTF? Is this the 1950s, again? Where's Biff Tanner?

You don't take anyone's word, mang. It's a fucking Transformers fan site.

That said, I'm a single dad. How my daughter behaves and is treated is a huge deal to me. In pre-school, we've had a lot of talks both ways.

I get that. Believe me, I do. I'm not going to go into my childhood here, because it's 1) nobodies business and 2) irrelevant. But I understand bullying. If anyone teased my daughter, I'd be pissed and I'm sure I'd do something (over-reactive) about it. It's not a black and white thing though. People have to draw the line somewhere between teasing (and handling it as such) and bullying (and handling it as such).

If a boy of a similar age (well ANY age, really) was bringing a Barbie lunchbox to school, then you'd expect some teasing. Any of our children are likely to be that tease. It's not right, but it's bound to happen. A child sees something out of place and they will comment on it. A child sees something that they perceive as absurd and they will mock it. Would you want your kid getting serious punishment that comes with bullying for that kind of teasing?

How much is too much? Feet can make gas pedals do more than go right to the floor or nothing at all. Parents need to be there as guardians and they need to guide their children. But they also have to be prepared for the day we're not there. We're not going to every day of school, we're not going to every party, we're not going on every date, and we're not going to be sitting in every job interview. In fact, they should be able to handle it on their own.

I intended to say that bullies will make fun of you for anything and everything if they percieve you as someone who will just put up with it. One day, it just got to be too much, so I beat up one of them. The rest just stood in a circle around the fight, laughing and gawking, making him the new scapegoat and rubbing his humiliation in deeper. And if kids only knew that carrying themselves with more confidence could stop a lot of bullying, I think that would be a good lesson to pass along.

I was bullied, i was skinny, i wore glasses i was quiet. I came home with a bloody nose more often than not. I've been in so many fist fights because of what i believe in(comics art etc) or what i look like. One time i was set upon by a gang of kids who beat the living crap out of me. Its not fun.

If it wasn't for my Mum (she was also a single working parent) who kept giving me awesome pep talks about how its the bigger man who takes it than reacts or theres no shame in running from 5 kids beating on you instead of trying to fight back, then i wouldn't be the well adjusted toy collector i am today.

We live in a world where people allow their kids to express themselves in ways they will be teased or bullied. Its a fact of life. Parents need to be there for their kids. Its not about molly coddling them or trying to make them live in a world were they are "looked after" its about guiding them and making sure they know they have someone who cares.

Get in a fight and the school punishes both people. even if it happens outside school sometimes. Best part is, at least my school, 3 fights and you get expelled.

Thats lame, then again there were so many punch ups at our schools they would have ended up expelling 75% of the school.

Teasing leads to suffering, suffering leads to anger, anger leads to Youtube venting.
