While watching the earlier episodes, I noticed that the characters seem to scream or make painful animal noises when they transform... So my questions is: Does it hurt to transform from beast to robot?

    Thoughts?

You'd assume theres some kind of flesh tearing/ bone snapping involved with an organic mode transformation.

Though with all the metal bits sticking out you never saw them getting any infections or needing tetnus jabs.

and if the organic parts sweat do the robot parts rust?

I think it was just something the animators added to make the transformation sequences a little more interesting. They didn't have the classic sound effect from the original cartoon, just a quieter shifting noise, which isn't all that dynamic.

There were no bones to break or flesh to tear. The flesh was synthetic and just kind of fit back together in a seamless, "this is a cartoon" kind of way.

the flesh was NOT synthetic, as was proven in many episodes... and the fact that dinobot was able to be cloned by his DNA, not copied via datatracks. even rhinox was seen feeding his beast mode (which resulted in bad gas) and in beast machines nightscream had to eat to stay alive. and they adopted beast modes because the "organic" outer shell was the only thing protecting the crunchy robot inside from the energon exposure.

Its probably less of a scream of pain, and more just a grunt of exertion. Transforming is probably like streching, or flexing a muscle.

No, it's a battle cry. Like when they're in beast mode and the growl or roar. They transform numerous times and don't make a noise.

Or maybe that's the start-up/shut-down noise their Beast Mode processors make?

Well I did notice it was a concept that was quickly abandoned, like how they phased out the "maximize" or "terrorize" unless they were introducing a new character or for dramatic effect. I like the "battle cry" theory... It's more dynamic.

Everyone knows in media an animal 'doesn't count' unless it makes noise. Lions roar, horses whinny, and swans make whatever the hell noises they make, even if they're just standing there, or stalking prey, which is usually the worst time to make a lot of sound.

i was about to point this out, it was abandoned right after episode 3 in season 2.... though the occassional character said it here and there, but not because they needed to, but for whatever reason it added substance. but again rise of the fuzors pretty much killed the need to say it anymore.

I agree with the "battle cry" camp. Seeing T-rex Megatron roar when transforming is a lot cooler compared to Megatron just transforming.

Yeah, it's roaring...after all, the theme is animals, so they're using what animals would use in battle. And during BW, the flehs is synthetic, not organic, so I don't think it would be painful. :)

Beast Ears Transformers had to eat organic matter to sustain their organic components. The flesh, whilst not strictly synthetic, was cloned generic tissue which did need sustaining. Also, since maximals and Predacons are FAR more fuel efficient than Autobots and Decepticons, the organic matter they ingested could also fuel them to an extent. (the shell also shielded them from energon overload)
Dinobot II was cloned from Dinobot's "DNA" basically means that the cloned genetic tissue contains a "bueprint" of Dinobot's internal functions, like the one that would have been imprinted onto his protoform. I presume this is how the CR chamber also knew how to repair them.
The animalistic noises made when transforming served no purpose other than to accentuate the fact that they transformed into animals. No pain is involved at all, since the flesh is "designed" to part in the right places to allow transformation.

its just something put in place of the original transformation noise.
there was no pain or ripping involved, the fur/hide, was synthetic.

the Maximals/Predicons had evolved to where they could eat, go to the bathroom, and had other bodily functions(bad gas), ect, however their main power source was still Energon, I don't recall if they actually had to eat for any reason.

with transforming, the fur/hide was simply on plates that connect and fit together, just like the G1 bots had plates that fitted together to form the outer vehicle mode shell, same thing... just with fur or a animal like hide.

no ripping, tearing, no infections cause its what they do, they transform.
they were not "organic", they were "Cybertronian organic(Machines)", the transformers becoming organic is what Beast Machines is about, Beast Wars is just about mimicking the local life.

as for the Dinobot DNA, I'm not sure, there are still many things in transformers that goes unexplained.

you are wrong... thats why in beast machines megatron couldnt get rid of his "organic" beast mode he picked up on earth. the maximals and predacons where robot/organic. i watched beast wars season one through three because of this thread and many times optimus talked about the organic nature they had picked up. so im sorry it sounds good what you say, but it is wrong. in beast machines they melded the two (becoming bio-organic) instead of organic in one mode, robot in the other - only difference.

IIRC, there were only a very few that actually made any kind of beast noise whilst Transforming (Dinobot for one).
Most of the time, it was just a kind of mechanical gears/clunking noise that accompanied the transformation.
Primal even made a kind of computerised hum/ding noise when he changed modes.

Megatron generally roared as did Rhinox, but I'd say this was in the minority.

In one episode, Tigatron even transformed silently using 'stealth mode'. Gotta love that guy :D

They aren't "organic in one mode, robot in the other" at all - they are techno-organic in both modes. Beast mode is a machine inside with an outer shell of organic material, and robot mode retains that material but it is spread out around the body.
Beast Machines centred around Megatron's war against anything techno-organic on Cybertron. He viewed it as an infestation.

Oh, I was speaking strictly of their season 1 forms.

these are quotes I found from reliable sources.

    season 1:
it remains unclear what the Beast Wars-era characters were, other than that they were evidently not Technorganic, The original Beast Wars cartoon never clearly explained the technology used to produce their "fleshy" beast modes. It is therefore unknown whether these animal parts were comprised of genuinely living organic tissue, or were were made of faux-biological synthetic matter.
Instances of damage to beast mode tissue were inconsistent, sometimes merely exposing sparking circuitry, other times being shown to seemingly bleed ("Spider's Game"). However, Cheetor states that "I don't have real blood—just mech fluid.

season 2: Transmetal is a (generally) Vok-related enhanced form of a Beast Wars era Transformer, featuring a "mutated superstructure" which seems to be made out of some kind of organic metal.
In beast mode, the Transmetals seemed almost, if not entirely, mechanical, much like the animal forms of their predecessors. However, as part of a partial "inversion", many of their robot modes bore organic elements, such as Cheetor's furry chest.

season 3: Transmetal 2 upgrade, These forms blurred the line between the mechanical and the organic, with both robot and organic appearing in both modes in an asymmetrical patchwork-like jumble.

Beast Machines: melding of technological and biological components into a single entity, fused at the cellular level, Technorganic Transformer is no longer a purely technological robot, nor an organic life form.
Technorganic Cybertronians do not have on-board computers to handle secondary operations.
transformation appears more fluid, like shape-shifting.

    I hope these quotes help

reread what you quoted, i said instead of, i refer to beast wars as being inside outside, beast machines being bio organic/ technoorganic.

Hmm. I always thought it was some kind of cloned/ vat grown synth flesh taken from DNA samples, this would explain why they took on the characteristics of their beast forms. The Preds were visibly more 'beastial' as a result, and this is later revealed to be because the Predacons removed the programming block to take better advantage of their beast forms. The Maximals, for reasons best known to themselves, put some kind of 'block' in place to prevent their beast natures from over-riding their robotic personalities (Tigatron being the exception). I really liked this aspect of the show, and its intertesting to see how adopting pseudo-organic forms tinkers with their personalities, as well as their physical make up.
