Detailing the never-told before origins of a certain Transformer Secret Race (in the War Within universe), this story features guests such as Galvatron, Cyclonus, the Duo-Drones, Grindcore and Cosmos. This SOD is absolutely brilliant - the origin of the Junkions has never really been explored - until now. For such a short comic strip, there really was a lot of depth here. Love the appearances by Galvatron and Cyclonus in this. I think this should be the definitive explanation for how the Junkions came to be. Well done.
Nice! I realized where it was going by page 4, but it works well. Integrating the Planet of Junk into Cybertron's geography is a interesting touch as well. Also the artwork has a nice consistency to it, and the sketchy qualities add rather than subtract. Good stuff! zmog
Thanks, everyone. And now, some notes PAGE 1 Panel 1: Cybertron in the sky is a tribute to G1 Sunbow cartoon episode The Ultimate Doom. Panel 2: "like vast predatory birds" is a quote from G1 Marvel UK saga Target 2006. The term "Galleon" was used in Battlestar Galactica to designated the ship of the ancient Tribes of Kobol. The "Age Of The Ember" is both a nod to BotCon's Shattered-verse and a reference to the main plot of the Constant Moons saga. This age took place during the reign of Solonicum Prime, two Primes before Nova. Panel 3: the unnamed cybertronians are Nova Prime and Jhiaxus. Their ideas about other species were described for the first time in Spotlight: Optimus Prime. From Ibai Canales's secret files, the details of the Cybertronian space fleet: * the big ship in the middle is the flagship, which has everything an evil robot army from space could want, from an armory to a laboratory to dissect hapless alien specimens. Heavily armed and shielded. * the elongated ship, with a cannon in its belly, is troop carrier, stuffed with Duo-Drones * the chubby ship, with the missile launcher on his "hunch", is a gunship. PAGE 2 These creatures have a Spark Core. Hence, they are related to Cybertronians. This story was created long before any of us could see Avatar by James Cameron, but after seeing this movie, we HAD to pay it the just tribute. The Spark Core contains information about the structure of its hosting body. Once again, we are implying that the Spark Core actively participate to the creation/shaping of a Protoform into an actual body (see the Gladiator tech files for more details). Panel 4: the sadistic and twisted scientis Jhiaxus at work. The original G2 character was a military commander. Simon Furman re-wrote him into Nova Prime's most trusted scientific advisors; Jhiaxus is responsible for the creation of the first (?) Gestalt, Monstructor, and the Female Cybertronians (as seen in Spotlight: Arcee). More about his perverted deeds in upcoming SoD stories. "The currents of space" is also the title of a novel by Isaac Asimov. "Magic", or "Dark Science", is mentioned in The War Within: The Dark Ages. In panel 6, the name "Moon Beta" finally reveals without any further doubt that this world is one of the moons of Cybertron. This version of Jhiaxus is inspired to the one drawn by Jeremy Tiongson. He was designed to be as grotesque and monsterous as possible (the original version, by E.J. Su, already looked enough like a Movie-former). PAGE 3 Featured in panel 1: - The triple forms of the Flywheel Duo-Drone model (robot, tank, jet) - see Duo-Drones file for more details; - Galvatron, as seen in Spotlight: Galvatron; - Cyclonus, as seen in Spotlight: Cyclonus, but with some influence from his Universe/Classic toy counterpart. Panel 2: Grindcore was created by Simon Furman for his Devastation and Revelation mini-series. He is featured in a flashback of our SoD: Omega Supreme chapter. Panel 3: "Fight Or Flee" is an episode of G1 Sunbow cartoon's Season 3. The Lunar Ancestors' spaceships, hidden in a silo, are a nod to the ancient spaceships hidden inside planet Paradron. The "colonists" bit is a tribute to Battlestar Galactica. It is also a hint to the Lunars origin: where did they ancestors come from? Could it be that they were one of Primus' first attempt as creating life, as were those demons seen in G1 Marvel US #76 ? More question arise: are there more than TWO moons? And were they inhabited? Nova Prime's plan for rewriting the galaxy in cybertronian image was detailed in Revelation. It is a very G2-esque plan, hence our choice of featuring a monstrous G2 machinery in panel 4. Panel 4: more of the mixed Cyclonus, this time in robot mode. Ibai chose to use Cyclonus and Galvatron for they are the 'hitmechs' for Nova, in Revelation, one because of his warlike nature, the other because of his fanatic patriotism. Cyclonus is the guy in charge of cyber-forming the Moon. PAGE 4 Panel 1: more than two Moons, yes. And one of them was like a small sun: this detail not only explains our daytime scenes in many of our SoD pages, but it also paves the street for another project by Franco & Ibai, called Pooling Our Resources (working title). Panel 2: what are those falling comets, maybe Athena's warriors from Saint Seiya? We wish, but the true influence are the "Protoform" meteors from Transformers The Movie 2007. The oracle's words are another nod to Battlestar Galactica: it's the cycle of time, with events that are fated to repeat in the history of cosmos. Panel 3: the security satellite which fails to see the Lunar starships has a robot mode. He is most likely one of Cosmos' proto-kins (although Cosmos won't be born until long after the end of Nova Prime's age). PAGE 5 The CircuitMasters are a group of philosopher already mentioned many times in our SoD comics. Senterius was one of them and, as suggested by dialogues in SoD Omega Supreme, he and Ultra Impactor were already around, when Paradise Lost took place. The dead mech in panel 2 is one of Jhiaxus' failed experiment at creating a Female Cybertronian. Panel 3: a Sharkticon is eating some local fauna. The Sharkticon was redesigned to look like one of those scary-looking abysmal fishes. The creature being eaten looks like those crazy mechanical beasts from G1 Sunbows cartoon's Season 3. PAGE 6 Panel 4: the needy mech is probably terminally-ill, and came here in a last desperate search for a cure. He found it... but who knows HOW he was healed? Panel 5: the "heavily armed cybertronian" is one of Hound's Proto-kins. His name is unknown to us, but he is a bounty hunter sent to the Junklands probably to retrieve a Junkion specimen (Jhiaxus had some interest in them, and so will Shockwave). He ends up being dismantled and having his remains repurposed by the Lunar later known as Detritus. Detritus appears in the last panel, putting on the "Hound helmet" while grinning malevolently. The "real" Detritus is a E-Hobby repaint of G1 Hound. And finally we can reveal the main goal of this Constant Moons story: the creation of a new version of the Junkions and the Planet Junk (now simply the Junklands, on the surface of Cybertron). From the secret file of Ibai, here come more details about the Junkions he designed for this Project. From left to right: Detritus, smiling while re-using the remains of the fallen bounty hunter to regenerate himself (hence the moustache and the "sunglasses"). Wreck-Gar, who was given a biker look because he's an outlaw and transforms into a motorbike. His look is inspired in Lemmy Kilmister's, frontman of british hard rock band Motorhead. Sewa-Tox, who used the remains of Jhiaxus' aborted Female (from page 5) to regenerate herself. Motorskull. The Berserker, whose look is viking-inspired, with those "horns" and the massive battle axe he wields (of which only the handle is visible in this panel).
