What do you guys think Optimus Prime's nickname should be? Or what do you prefer him to be called for short?

To me, it always seemed kind of weird when he's just called "Optimus," like in the live action movies. I seem to like it more when he's called just "Prime." I guess that's more of a G1 thing.

I do realize that now "Prime" is more of a rank then just a name. Even the movies made reference to it. The Fallen: "only a Prime can defeat me."

But still, whatcha guys think?

 

Given how recent interpretations have 'Prime' as a rank, I feel that calling Optimus Prime 'Prime' is akin to calling someone 'Captain' or 'Major' or whatever, whereas calling 'Optimus' is akin to using Captain Whatever's actual name.

I'm still partial to 'Bigbot', however.

Convoy? I've always liked that name for Optimus. TO bad it was dumped overseas in favor of his USA name

I had the feeling people who are close friends would call him Optimus, and people less close to him, respect him as a commander or as an enemy would call him Prime.

Funny enough, in the first live action movie, Ironhide calls him both on different occassions..?

 

That one's good..but I liked "Boss-Bot" in TFA.

Also, if it is a rank, so what? Captain America is called "Cap" by his buddies. As I recall, Cap is an actual Captain, what with having been in the US Army and all.

Since I started reading the G1 comics a while before I saw the cartoon I'd always heard/read either 'Optimus Prime' or 'Optimus'. As odd as it may seem now I was rather surprised back then when Hound said 'Right here, Prime' in MTMTE.

I just like to call to call him Optimus. That is his name after all. The characters in my fan-fics call him by different nicknames though. "Prime", "Boss-bot", "Convoy", "Big-boss", "Ops". It all depends on where you stand with Optimus, if he's your friend or your commander.

 

In my head I often refer to him as Opt, but I guess that's just because I tend to shorten the names of most of the characters I'm fond of. A term of endearment, I guess--as cheesy as that sounds.

Otherwise I'm in the Optimus boat, since I also equate Prime as sounding more like a title and less like a name.

I'm also get a kick out of Boss-bot.

 

I like "OP" too. Or maybe that's too much like Opie. Yeah, getting a Mayberry vibe on that one.

That's what the Rifftrax guys called him on more than one occasion. Or, according to Bill Corbett..."Until you turn 18 you call him Mr. Prime."

 

Sam always just screams "OPTIMUS!" so I'll go with that.

Really though, I agree that just shortening it to Optimus is calling him by his name, and Prime is his "rank."

 

I prefer Prime. I'll use Optimus around general audience people, you know, non-TF fans.

Prime is what most Autobots and Decepticons call their Prime across the franchises. He's called Optimus by people like maybe Ironhide, Megatron, or the Optimus in questions' second in command or close friends.

For example, in the films, Ironhide, Bumblebee, Arcee and Ratchet, as older veterans closer to Prime could call him Optimus. Jetfire could probably call him that as well. Megatron would certainly call him Optimus, but all other Decepticons refer to Prime as Prime.

In Animated, not one of the Autobots under Prime's command ever called him Optimus, not even Ratchet. Only Magnus, Sentinel, Jazz (to some extent), and Megatron ever really called him Optimus. Blitzwing only referred to him by real name for business.
