The Princess and the Frog- 9/10

I bought the wife the BD the other day and she convinced me to watch it and...I'm glad that I did. It was a borderline musical, which for the record is NOT my cup of tea, but this movie did it so well that you almost forget that's what your seeing or hearing. The story was that good, if not a little predictable. The BD transfer looks great, especially the villans intro. Check it out if you haven't!

The Last Samurai - 10/10. I cannot for the life of me come up with one bad thing about this film. Literally every inch of film pushes the story forward, wasting nothing. Great film, great story, and I don't mind Cruise in his role. But for me, Ken Watanabe stole the show as Katsumoto. His acting is awe-inspiring and brilliant. And Edward Zwick is just a phenomenal director.

The Silver Chalice (1954) - 8/10. This was a very enjoyable film about an artist hired to make a silver chalice for the actual Holy Grail used by Christ at the Last Supper. Incidentally, it was also Paul Newman's big screen debut, as the artist in question. Funny enough, Newman himself despised the film, which is interesting as I actually found it charming. Newman hated this film so much, that when they showed it for a week-long engagement in California in the sixties, Newman wrote a newspaper article begging people not to see it by commenting "six days this week, I will be apologizing for this movie," which, will wonders never cease, only made the public want to see it more.

2012 - 6/10 abysmal writing, this movie was weighed down by disaster movie cliches that just lacked any sort of emotional impact. Admittedly I enjoyed the yellowstone eruption, that alone would be worthy of a big budget movie.

    Clash of the Titans (2010) - 6/10

Didn't do much for me. Even the 3D effects got kind of boring after a while. On the plus side some of the monsters were cool.

Yeah, I got to give Clash either a 6 or 7 out of 10. the latter if one hasn't seen the original and 6 if compared to the original. Sure the original's effects aren't as good but I found the original had more charm and character IMO.

2012 - 7/10. It was fine, nothing special and aslong as you don't think while watching it, its quite an enjoyable movie at times. Cliche ridden movie though thats nothing more than explosions and the special effects.

The Fourth Kind: 7/10 Very well done movie, especially with interlacing the real footage to the movie.

    Alice in Wonderland (2010) - 7/10...a very generous 7

I usually enjoy Tim Burton's creativity (Planet of the Apes not withstanding) however I just felt this take lacked originality. The 3D added nothing, and I found Johnny Depp quite dull. The other supporting characters/voices (Alan Rickman, Christopher Lee, Little Britain's Matt Lucas) did elevate the rest of the film a bit, but it was Helena Bonham Carter's Red Queen and her energy who really stole every scene she was in

Star Trek (2009) - 9/10. I'm so glad they got back to basics and pepped it up. I've never liked any other version of Star Trek than the originals, so this was perfect for me as a fan of Shatner and Nimoy. Hopefully they can do to the new Godzilla film what they did to this - make it fast and fun.

Alice in Wonderland (1951) - 8/10. I think the two best words to sum this movie up are: delightful nonsense. It's a classic, so I knew I'd enjoy it, but I wasn't prepared for how funny it was. I've yet to see Tim Burton's version, but I doubt it would measure up for me personally. Disney's animators, the voice actors, everyone out-did themselves on this one.

The Black Swan (1942) - 10/10. This is one of the films that embodies the phrase "they don't make them like they used to". Tyrone Power, who was famous for portraying Zorro a few years earlier, did a fantastic job as a reformed pirate hired by the Governor of Jamaica (another reformed pirate) to hunt down a scurvy dog looting and plundering. Great Pirate classic. When this film was released, WWII was in full swing and Power had signed up for the Marines as a private while it was still circulating. It was a great leaving point though, because it ensured that he would remain in the public consciousness while he was in service.

The Spanish Main (1945) - 10/10. Errol Flynn was dominating anything with pirates or swashbucklers over at Warner Bros., so Paul Henreid (Casablanca) went over to RKO and did this little jewel. Just a rolicking good time. And I give them props for featuring Anne Bonny as a character, as she was a real flesh and blood pirate back in the day of piracy.

Captain Blood (1935) - 10/10. This was the film that made the world sit up and notice Errol Flynn. Just absolutely bloody fantastic. Great tale of a wronged doctor sold into slavery and eventually escaping with his rag tag band of misfits and becoming a famed pirate captain. Basil Rathbone did an excellent job as a villain in this production and I can see why Flynn was the Warners' go-to guy for a film of its type.

The Musketeer (2001) - 8.5/10. They don't make enough films based on the works of Dumas. They're fun and timeless. But I particularly remember this one, as it was just days after the September 11th terrorist attacks that I got to see it on the big screen. I didn't remember pre-Grey's Anatomy star Justin Chambers as D'Artagnan, but he did a decent job. And Tim Roth was pitch perfect as the archetypal villain dressed in black. All-in-all, a fun film with awesome choreography.

Clash of the Titans (both): 7/10. Each had their own strengths and weaknesses and had their own charms and awesome bits. Honestly, I enjoyed them both equally.
