Avatar probably, District 9 maybe, ROTF lolwut.
I would normally root for the underdog District 9, but Avatar was so damn beautiful it just deserves the award, no contest there.

didnt see District 9, but i saw Avatar and ROTF-and IMHO ROTF looked more realistic-nothing was realistic about the CGI in Avatar-it could have been worse, but it also could have been better. in ROTF, the robots look as real as possible except for one scene-during part of the Fallen/Prime fight at the end, the Fallen looked kinda off. but otherwise, i think ROTF should take it for VFX

I really want to pull for the underdog District 9 and in some other years I think it would have had a shot at the award. If anything I hope that District 9 will influence other film makers into the idea that you don't need a massive budget to pull off fantastic effects.

Avatar just blows everything else away with both Pandora and all the human gear that I can't think of any film in any year that would have a shot at beating it out for the award. Avatar just seems like one of those movies that change the game by taking it to a new level. Which really isn't that bad for all of us sci-fi fans because that means a whole lot of special effects team will have a new bench mark of beating Avatar's effects.

Perhaps Transformers 3 will be able to take the effects award when it gets released.

Why should we? Just because we are in a fandom does not mean that we have to support every part of it. I would personally like to see the Bay movies removed from the records and just pretend that they never happened.

That said, I vote for District 9. The CG/real world interactions were fantastic. Not only was I blown away, but I was even able to sit back and completely accept what I saw on the screen as reality. That is the mark of good special effects.

lol. I can't believe the amount of butthurt going on in this thread. ROTF wasn't the best movie in town, it was just popular. Also, Giant Robots are totally old now, we had them since TTM.

Everyone should know that the award is going toward Avatar. It isn't just about "realism." I have to laugh again at people going "BUT TRASFORMING CAR ROBOTS LOOKS MORE REAL." Avatar created an ENTIRE WORLD of a flair and imagination, everything OOZED with tender care and tiny details EVERYWHERE. Outside of a few set pieces and the humans the ENTIRE THING was computer generated. Heck the human mechs looked like they had so much more detail and care put into their animations and motions than a few ROTF bots.

Transformers had explosions, robots beating each other up, and shaky cam.

Just so you guys no, I'm not drinking the Cameron Kool-Aid. I knew literally nothing about Avatar going in. Just Blue people in space.

If ROTF wins, its a crime against humanity.

Honestly guys, if you want to see awards and recognition in the VFX and SVFX fields, turn to the Academy Technical awards and other trade competitions. The Oscars are a public face and the Academy members can be fickle. There's no way Avatar's not winning this year. And there's even less of a chance that RotF will walk away with the statue.

Avatar's going to win, not because of some perceived vendetta against Michael Bay or Transformers, but because the movie had not only some of the best special effects in a film ever but the best use of 3D ever implemented in a movie. TF2 really doesn't stand a chance.

I'm sorry, but that is quite simply wrong. Yes, the animals in Avatar are based on real animals; but that only makes it HARDER to make them look convincing. We know what they're based on, so it's far easier for us to recognize flaws, things that don't add up and break the illusion. That Avatar made every single living creature look so incredibly real is simply mindblowing.

Not just that, but they made them look alive. It wasn't just mimicking real creatures. The designers did everything they could to make them and their world look like a real alien world, with nothing too far out there and still believable. Even the military stuff was very well thought and quite practical.

Compare that to RotF, which had compositing issues in most scenes (the bots never really blended in with their enviroment), some rushed bits and oversights (Rampage being color corrected in one frame and then yellow again in the next, or partially yellow), and designs that are only made to look cool but aren't anything special otherwise...

And let's not forget that Avatar was the breakthrough for 3D cameras and the new mo-cap technology, that is basically digital makeup and will allow instant feedback instead of spending a lot of time in the editing room.

It doesn't matter who had the longest development time, or the biggest budget. It's about the best effects, and Avatar had those, hands down. The only movie that could beat it is District 9, which had amazing CGI for such a 'small' movie.

Oh, and then there is Bay being a rather poor director while Cameron is the end all be all action director who has proven himself time and time again, and Avatar is an infinitely better movie than RotF, even with it's weak plot (which is at least COHERENT). Not to mention that it's the nr. 1 movie of 2009, box office wise.

Coming form a guy who HATED both ROTF and Avatar, I would probably go for Avatar rather than ROTF...

Avatar was fun watching the first 30 minute whila I was all OMFG THE EFFECT ARE AWESUUUUM!!! and it was fun the last 30 minutes becasue of the epic battle that can *almost* match some of the LOTR battles....

End even thought I didn't like the designs of Na'vi or the animals, they looked a lot more beliveable than the Transformers and they were a lot easier on the eyes.
(btw how come on Pandora everything has six limbs, but Na'vi only have four? Thats not how biology works people!!!)

Anyways even thought Avatar is gong to win 100% I'm still cheering for my champion District 9 :D

Avatar and Coraline were both mind-boggling. GI Joe, Angels and Demons, District 9, TF:ROTF, really didn't "push the envelope".

Avatar's Smurfs had an insane amount of detail, layer, and essance. Ignore the ultra-new age/liberal storyline, you are still surrounded by a thing of beauty.

Coraline was stopmotion so smooth, so clean, that it looked like CGI. It was insanely gorgeous design, as well. It managed to outdo Tim Burton.

While annoying, the monkeys seen early on in the movie did look like they were family of the Na'vi and maybe even share a common ancestor. Braids, arms fused up to the elbow, same kind of eyes, blue skin...So while still weird, it's not THAT odd.

    The final list, I think will end up being A V A T A R, ROTF & then D-9.

I have to say I enjoyed each film differently. They are all about aliens yes, but one will have be the winner, I really can't decide.

If ROTF wins, it will be because of the Devastator and the forrest battle, and Alice. Those scenes were difficult and tidious to create, 140 terabytes is what I remember the film took up, that's huge. The award might not mean much to most people considering that it won tons of bad reviews, but for the fans and Bay it would bring a welcoming accomplishment, and will motivate production for TF3, just hope it won't incourage more robot humping, or testicles.

District-9 also deserves it's prize as a winner, the artists did a superb job in bringing those insect like aliens to life, not to mention the beautiful display of weapons. The very little technology we got to see from the aliens was amazing, I've never seen anything like it.

The last of my list is Avatar. It achieved everything and more, for a movie that didn't grab my attention the first time I saw the trailers. I will be seeing this movie again because I can't believe how great it was. If it wins the prize for best special effects, it will be because it was everywhere, from the little creatures to giant mountains that float up in the air.

I may not be able to choose among these three, but as long as G-Force doesn't beat ROTF to the finals, I'm happy.

Yeah but me being the biology freak and all that kinda annoyed me...

I can get pass the ******ed hotwire connection they have with their animals and trees though the hair this one just bugged me...

I mean take Earth thought the whle history of evolution of land animals all spine based organisams had four limbs, from dinosaurs to todays tigers, it's just that kind of temple.

You can't simply have a gazilion animals with six limbs but just one species with four, it doesn't work...

But again this is me being all biological and all, since hey I want to become a doctor one day, biology is my thing so I found this annoying, most of people just didn't even notice that....

Another thing buged me also since Pandora is a world of lower gravity, that is the reason why everthing is so huge, how come people were able to move just like on Earth? This is another small insignifikant bitch of mine but it bugded me...

Anywas we better continue this in the Avatar thred this is getting off topic...

    ANYWHO BACK ON TOPIC

    DISTICT 9 FTW!!!!!

My guess is that the Final 3 will be:

    Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
    Avatar
    District 9 or Star Trek

... And Avatar will win. The special effects were unbelievable.

It is sort of weird what we "have" to support as a fandom. We don't say that we have to support the comic books, and it's okay not to support some of the toys but when it comes to the movies we "have" to support it even if the film didn't offer the things we might have been looking for.

I'm a fan of movies and TV so if someone does something better that counts more than if I'm a fan of it before it became a movie. Heck I've been a GI Joe junky since GI Joe first shrank down to 3 3/4" but I couldn't support Rise of Cobra for any sort of awards.

You know, the Oscar Nominations haven't been announced yet. its just been submitted, it might not make the cut, considering the other films out there.
