It's funny because i mentioned this to the Admin who posted the news article and linked to this topic. He put the story into one post, talking about Leader SS and Plague so now this topic is a mixed mess.

Well, may as well throw my two cents. To me the Plague, since it was a vehicle-less decepticon combiner, can only have been an iteration of the decepticon that was also known during development as the Swarm, the Hive, the Insecticon collective (seen there) and ended up becoming Reedman. The name would be a reference to the eighth plague of Egypt, the plague of locusts, a fitting name for an insecticon swarm.

The drawing's just a generic protoform because said decepticon only got its definitive role and look late in production.

I think it's just a Decepticon protoform. Called plague because there were so many of them at the end of the movie.

 

he is a protofor, there are armies of them, hence the name!

 

If it was just that there'd be no mention of combining. And "Plague" doesn't mean army or even high numbers outsidde of the insect context

 

maby hes an insectoid biped!

 

But then that means he's not one of the generic protoforms. Which brings us back to the known-to-be-insectoid insecticon collective which eventually became Reedman.
