My thoughts as well. Makes it far too easy for them to go with Transformers 3 more of the same just like other franchises have ran themselves in the ground with more of the same for a third film.

That and the worry Hollywood will say bad movies filled with special effects make big money so lets just make more bad films in general and the heck with story or characters.

The name of the brand is what draws people in.

Transformers as a name is means a lot to people especially those who grew up watching it yet grew out of the toys and comics way before we all did. The nostalgia of Transformers created by the 2007 movie was a huge draw especially in the eye of the general public so it was inevitable the sequel would have major interest too.

People have to a buy a ticket & see a movie to then decide wether they like it or not, its hard to judge something you haven't seen. A bajillion people were interested in seeing it, and so did.

For a movie "universally" panned by critics... to be #1 in receipts...

True - but it's broken even at this point. So hopefully it will do well enough that we'll see more in that universe.

As for ROTF being bad film but making $ - for the same reason Avatar will make $$...

sometimes people just want to see a spectacle. Story can be a side item. If I want a good story, I'll see more indie-ish films like Precious, District Nine, etc. Sometimes folks just want to see pretty stuff (Avatar) & others see shit blow up (ROTF).

You should take your own advice Cameron :p

So TF2 made gazilion dollars...and that comes as a surprise?
Seriously I knew it was going to be #1 from the start.

It had giant robots, tits and exsplosion everywhere of course it's going to earn a sh*t load of money!

Does that mean that it's a guality movie? Hell no.

Even thought I dislike Avatar and ROTF, I haveto say that this is very very true...
I also enjoy watching epic things and stuff, but it all depends on the mood, and I just wasn't in the mood for another Hollywood CGI pornfest...

Transformers beat avatar because James Cameron had it released too late to get #1 in 2009. Now if he released it on say October 20th or something its likely to say it would have gotten #2 at the very least.

Also transformers got #1 because all the other movies sucked

    Up was childish
That monster thing had the president scan his ass >_>
Twilight was a total fan girl wankish pile of shit.
I didn't see blind side so I can't comment or speculate (lol TF quote)
Also I skipped harry potwhore because I didn't feel like watching teenagers play wizard with magic sticks.
Can't comment on the hangover either. I don't usually like those movies that are about that shit.
    Star trek was ok
Ice age was fine. I didn't like it as much as its predecessors. Since this one had less good humor then the first two. I got abit bored watching it :/

The only three I like that I can make a comment on is TF2, Avatar and Star trek were the only good ones I've seen this year. 09 has been a year of mainly sucky movies. We all agree on that. =P

Actually, if I go to the movies and whatever I see ends up being a stinker, I get my money back.

It's incredibly sad that that it did so well.

Virtually every frame of that movie was completely packed with unmitigated stupidity and I deeply regret paying to see it and contributing to the box office numbers.

Avatar on the other hand...is gorgeous. It's the anti-Revenge of the Fallen. It was made with care and attention to detail that makes Bay's films look like a high budget high school project.

I'm sorry to hear this. TF2 was, IN MY OPINION, one of the WORST of the year. The AWFUL AWFUL dialog, the 'fart', 'sex', and 'weed' jokes, the RIDICULOUS story...the first film was FAR superior in my opinion. Like you said 'top grossing' doesn't always (actually RARELY) means 'best'. Obviuosly people flocked to this turd in droves. And as far as AVATAR - give me a break. Dances with Wolves in space with blue aliens (indians)? And some stupid 'Man is Bad' theme - save it for your peace rallies ya hippie hack! There. I've been waiting for months to spill this...Now I know this opinion is part of a small group of dissenters, and I agree it IS good that TF got #1, means more sequels. Let us, or at least me and the 5-6 people close to me who were disappointed, get a GREAT PART 3!!
One of these days I'm going to post a dissection of ROTF and point out all the flaws, not from a 'fanboy' point of view, but from a filmaking/story-telling vantage. I've tried to watch ROTF a few times, but just the first 20 minutes alone has enuff to turn me off. I AM glad there are people who enjoyed it, and I don't want to take anything away from them. But I just gotta explain myself one of these days. Here's hoping TF3 will actually be GOOD!

between week 1 and week 2 Avatar only dropped 2% in screening views in the US collecting another $75M...considering of its total profit only 39% is from US, i highly doubt that it will beat TF2.

it would be awesome if TF3 holds a record like this...loong way to go tho

As I've said before, the real bad news is that this almost ensures that the third TF film will suck even more because this one made money. The logical fallacy of Hollywood is that money = people like it.

You only have to get the people's money once, you know...

But people DID like it. Lots of 'em. We tend to forget (or choose to ignore, take your pick) our little bubble at TFW is only the tiniest fraction of the movie going population.

And they actually got our money twice. Even more the second go around.

well i think this is fantastic news. rotf, while it had its many problems *some of the humor and most of the human scenes* was a GREAT film. i came to see one thing and one thing only when i went to go see that movie. GIANT ALIEN ROBOTS BEATING THE SHIT OUT OF EACH OTHER WITH GIANT GUNS AND SWORDS AND WHAT NOT! and if you take out all the crappy human jokes and some of the bad human characters *COUGH leo COUGH* and leave in the good jokes, like the twins and the wrecking balls *the only reason that joke was ruined in my part, was because simmons had to make the scrotum remark, if he hadn't had said that, and left it subtle, it would have been much funny-er i think.* thats exactly what we got! people should stop complaining about the stupid humor of the movie and the stupid human characters. we went to see the robots, and for many, myself included, we got to see them! and it was amazing! so thats my say. im very glad it was #1. it deserves that tittle. and i hope tf3 is just as good or better than rotf.

and btw, i dont see at all how blue alien pochohontas in space or the sparkly "vampires" could even contend with rotf. but i wont go into that.
