Not to jump the gun on judgments without knowing *anything*, really, but this does sound like a bad gimmick for the new 2010 line much like the Minicons in Armada and the combining feature in Energon.

It does have that. I'm thinking two robots, one maybe smaller like a Minicon, Scout or some other kind of partner (Nebulan-ish), where one has the batteries (probably the smaller one) and the other has the electronics. Combine them together and lights and sounds occour and maybe hidden springloaded weapons or wings pop out (so the toy isn't useless if the batteries run out). Or something similar but you can mix and match partners and get different sounds or light combinations. Maybe plug the partners into bases or guns to get extras happen on those. Hmm... now I'm reminded of Starcom.
I could see that working nicely with a Powermasters revival. It's Minicons, Powerlinx and all other kinds of past TF gimmicks all rolled into one. Might be costly though so I'm also betting it won't be that but some lame and cheap thing that just has a grander name than the result.

I liked Energon for the individual modes too. While the show was obivously a turd, the toyline kicked major amounts of ass. The combining gimmick was kind of cool, because of how you could buy any two Deluxes or any two Voyagers and they could combine, rather than hunting for specific components like past lines. While the combiners were less than stellar, and one of the more intrusive gimmicks of the UT, they were still, IMO, not a failed experiment.

Sounds pretty cool to me! Powerlinx combiners with Headmasters might be cool too. The more TFs you collect from the line, the more combinations, sort of like Energon but with a few improvements in the combining area.

I have a feeling somehow humans will be involved in the "Power Cores".

I never understood how in the show having Inferno become a pair of pants for Hot Shot was somehow a better military tactic than having both Inferno and Hot Shot attack the Decepticons.

That would be awesome, but seem a little far-fetched to me. We can always hope, though.

When are gimmicks ever liked by the fanbase?

Humans are pretty hard to ignore. Us pesky little meat-bags have atleast a little role in almost every fiction.

I am also hopeful of a return to the Headmaster/Powermaster/Targetmaster concept. It has been a long time since they saw much action as part of a toyline (Cyclonus expected). I would have thought though that they would have used those names for the gimmick if that's what it was going to be rather than inventing a new description for something they already have a patent for? (My understanding of such things is limited, I study International Relations, not law as it relates to property rights and businesses. So please correct me if I am mistaken.) Headmasters were recently used in the IDW comics, maybe Hasbro sees an opportunity to capitalise on that fiction as well as the new one for the forthcoming series.

I don't understand it fully either, but to my knowledge, the combined robot adds the componnent robot's strength together and adds even more. I don't get how "5+5=11", but in Energon, nothing made sense. :lol

Everything up to this point is pure speculation, all we have is one picture. Nothing has been confirmed or debunked.

Interesting. I'd like some combining, while the individual robots look good.

Combiners have never been a particular favourite of mine. I have a couple (namely the RotF releases of Bruticus Maximus and Superion as I quite like the overall asthetic of them, Encore Bruticus, and the Ice Cream Twins) and will be getting both versions of RotF Devastator. If these look good then I'm in.

I hope this doesn't lead to Hasbro going backwards on their "no more line wide gimmcks" promise. Though as long as the gimmicks are good I probably won't mind too much. Just don't overdo it. :lol
