It's really not as hard as it looks... I printed out a picture toned to black and white (tried to eliminate any shaded areas, you want flat colors) and sized to match my pumpkin. Next I pinned the print out onto the face of my pumpkin as tightly as possible. Then I used a little poker tool from a clay working kit to punch very light holes all over the pumpkin, tracing the edges of the black spots of my print out. Once all the holes were punched I removed the paper and carefully played connect the dots to more or less draw the image directly onto the pumpkin. Lastly I used a standard Xacto knife and carefully carved away the skin of the pumpkin in the areas that I wanted to shine through (the black spots on my print out). Takes a long time but with a little care it wasn't too tough.

If you want to take it an extra step, you can actually create 3-toned images (low, mid and highlighted areas). Simply carve through areas you want highlighted. This creates three-tones. areas where the skin is removed are translucent so you end up with a neutral tone, whereas areas that are carved through end up far brighter. This allows for greater contrast.

    Here's an example:

In this pumpkin, the yellow areas are actually the only areas that are completely cut out. The orange areas are where the skin is removed using an artist's knife. Ironically, this is very easy to do. Transcribing an image onto the pumpkin is actually the greater challenge.

Here are my pumpkins this year. They're from premade stencils, so I can only take credit for the workmanship, not the design! I'm thrilled with how they turned out.

Here ours from tonight. My daughter picked the design. I had about 30 minutes to whip this together before the Trick-or-Treaters arrived...

    Arise, zombie Halloween thread, arise!

I'm about ready to start carving some pumpkins, and remembered this thread for ideas. Our church is having a 'trick or trunk' function tonight, and I'm going with a TF theme for my trunk. We have the Animated play tent to serve as a back drop, and I'm going to put some TF jack o'lanterns, some nice big TFs (Brave Max, Unicron, Primus, Supreme Cybertron Starscream, maybe MP Ops and Megs. Add to this Bacala's TF mixes CD that he handed out a couple of Botcons ago and some name brand candy, and a special giveaway of movie Camshaft (got an extra one with Leader Prime, yea me), and I'm gonna have a pretty rockin' display.
