I just finished rewatching Char's Counterattack and that got me thinking" why don't we have a thread to talk about the shows?" And so, I give us this, The gundam show thread. Discuss as much as you wish.
G Gundam is the best! Eventually I gotta go through and watch all the series, but as of turn now, I'm wanting to view After War X myself, mainly cause I'm playing Super Robot Wars Alpha Gaiden now, and Jamil and Garrod in the DX and GX are some of my best units in the game, and kick some MAJOR butt. What'd you think of CCA anyway btw? I thought it was a rather weak and lame ending for the main chars of the UC era personally, and Quess was annoying. Char and Amuro's endings definitely needed to be better than what we got.
Mobile Suit Gundam, Zeta Gundam and Gundam Wing along with 00 are my favorites. I've yet to watch G Gundam but I heard good things.
^Great series right there. But you havn't seen G Gundam? How is that even possible? Also, why not, because it is fantastic. Also I thought CCA was a great movie. Quess is a bitch though. Glad she died.

Love UC, but hate Char's Counterattack. It looks great, but the script is abominable and its like watching a compilation movie despite not actually being one. I only dig anything that has to do with the Universal Century timeline. The 08th MS Team is my favorite series, followed by War in the Pocket - Norris Packard and the Cyclops Team are my heroes. Operation Stardust and Zeta are pretty darn good, too - tied for third place. Wing is shit. Keep emo Nancy-boys and homoerotic undertones out of my Gundam, please.
which reminds me. i bought the 08th MS team series on DVD and i never did finish it but yah. i loves me some gundam. kinda turned off by the newer stuff though. i just cant seem to get myself into it but yah. i think my most favorite is 0083. love it. Wing has a pretty special place too cuz it was the series that got me into Gundam
^^^0083 gets a lot of hate from some people, but those people need to shut up. I think 0083 is awesome. And Josh, you REALLY need to finish 08th MS Team. Personally I think all the episodes are pretty darn great, and I think the last few episodes were the most epic. Remember how 0083 started off pretty cool and by the last few episodes it was all-out chaos and explosions and war and more chaos and cool violence? Tonally, that's what the last few episodes of 08th MS Team are like. If you have the DVD, you owe it to yourself to watch the entire series, consecutively. You won't regret it. One of my favorite Gundam fights ever takes place near the end of the series. I don't want to spoil it, but here's some teasers. It's not as epic as the fights in CCA or 0083 (EG, you don't have armies of thousands of mobile suits shooting at each other), but this fight has the most creative use of mobile suits for a fight scene I've ever seen in Gundam. The participants in this fight use their MS's in really imaginative ways where you think, "Jee, why hasn't any other robot anime did this with their giant robots?"
0083 was pretty good, fantastic animation. Although 0080 is the best Gundam ever in terms of story, character development, awesome. I have to watch CCA, F91, and V Gundam at some point.
at RabidYak's post Char's Counterattack was awesome. I do enjoy SEED (SEED Destiny was just awful), and I dig Gundam 00 the most.
RabidYak, that was funny man. Also, quick thought, has anyone seen ZZ? And if so, what did you guys think of it? Also, if you havn't seen it, you might want to if you're going to watch Unicorn.
Still trying to finish Turn A. It's a good series, but I wonder why it never really caught on in America...too long maybe? ZZ is good, I recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it yet 00 Gundam is incredible, but the original series is my favorite
oh i've seen 08th before but its just been awhile and what i saw the first time were subs, not the dub but yah. 0083 and 08th are definitely my top fav. gundam shows. didnt much care for War in the Pocket tho and i havent actually SEEN many eps of the original series. i've played through the various games so i know how the story goes but i'd like to pick up the movies too i need to get G Gundam on DVD too. so far ive got the complete 0083, complete 08th, and complete Gundam Wing [and Endless Waltz] i need more
I love All gundam cept for Destiny. Can't wait for Unicorn. I wish they would translate the novels already.
0083 gets a lot of hate for a very very good reason: They changed directors midway through, and the latter half of the series is utter crap compared to what we got in the first half. Suddenly there's a love triangle, when Nina saw Gato several times before (and heard his name a half dozen times at least) and remembers they were screwing years ago? Suddenly Kou likes/cares about her beyond, "Fix my damn Gundam, woman!"? Cima's exposition episode, which explains her background and how she got crapped on by everyone is removed for what, an episode of a bunch of idiots going, "I love you! No! She's mine! Bang bang!". Oh, and suddenly, out of nowhere, Titans. Cause they're COOOOOOOOL. 0083 isn't a bad series per se...it would have been even greater if the original team stayed on it. Or if it was truncated down to 6 eps. No way did it need to be 13 eps, there was way too many filler things in it.
Its nowhere near as heinous as the internet makes it out to be, but I can easily see how people get that impression if they give up before getting to the second half of the series. I think its more a victim of timing then anything. People would have loved it if it was made 10 years later as an AU show, but starting with 20-odd episodes of light entertainment when your coming directly off the back of Zeta comes across as a bit of a derailment.
I agree Char's Counterattack sucked, though to be honest except for the original Gundam movie trilogy I dont care much for Tomino's works. My favorite Gundam shows are definitely the OAV's that came out in the late 80's and 90's (0080, 0083, 8th MS Team). And I dont care what anyone thinks about 0083 I love that show and is by far my favorite Gundam. Yeah it's got issues but frankly I dont care, the issues it does have (meh characters, WTF love triangle) dont get in the way, it's got great animation and shit blowing up real good
