Portnoy as an AFTERTHOUGHT? he is incredible. My list: Buddy Rich- Zeus of the Drums Neil Peart Mike Portnoy Travis Barker and i can't think of his name, but Conway Twitty's drummer was good, too.
David Silvera is ass. I can drum better than him, and I can only do easy mode on Guitar Hero drums. Joey Jordison, whether you like Slipknot or not, is a decent drummer. Rhythm wise, not sure, I've never really heard anything that would test him, but fuck me he can drum fast. Travis Barker is awesome too. Why has nobody mentioned Dave Lombardo yet?
Yuh, I second the Dave Grohl vote but mostly for his stuff with QOTSA. (my GOD, his work on First It Giveth and No One Knows). But I'd have to say Matt Helders of the Arctic Monkeys. He's not particularly fast or anything like that but his drumming always seems to be perfect for each song. I also like Dom from Muse too but he isn't very memorable for his drumming. He's just kinda 'there' save a few exceptions (Time is Running Out).
Silvera's got the best like he's got the life dude. He has a slightly dif. style, thats all, and besides, he quit drumming and opened up a godamn Steak and Sushi bar in LA someplace . But Joey for the win here, TAKE THAT KICKBACK!!!
I never knew that he played the drums on The Colour and Shape. Guess you can't really keep the guy off his set . Dave had some great work on With Teeth too. Can't wait to hear from the 'Them Crooked Vultures' project him, Josh Homme, and John Paul Jones got coming. Also on drumming, I think Trent Reznor is pretty damn good himself.

F'n A! I was reading through the thread getting more and more perturbed he wasn't in here until I saw your post. What a damn fine career he's already had, and him jumping in with Fear Factory is gonna be incredible. Plus, Dethklok's new album hits in September. Dark Angel = rulz. He's done tour dates with about all the big-name metal bands when their main drummer flatlined for personal reasons or whatever. Sat in with Slayer for crap sake back during Lombardo's in-out maneuvering. He's just plain awesome as a timekeeper, and able to flick his feet faster than should be legal.
Eh, it's not that the last three are any lesser than the ones on my 'main' list, just that I'm not really a big fan of the bands they're actually in (a fact which is usually cause for even more outrage... 'Dream Theater? Cryptopsy!? MESHUGGAH!?') Brian Manta. I think.
@ Joey Jordison posts. I knew someone was going to say him sooner or later and people were going to say something. He's a good drummer, the best? no... but this thread isn't about who is the best drummer. It is about your favorite drummer. Doesn't mean they have to be the fastest, or anything like that. Just your personal choice I even met that little midget I couldn't help laughing my ass off over the Lars Ulrich posts
Chad Sexton-311 Paul Bostaph-currently w/Testament Chris Houck- Nothingface Chad Smith - RHCP Dave McClain- Machine Head These guys are pretty good Oh and Jamie Miller- formerly or currently of SNOT
He hadn't found Taylor Hawkins (another great drummer, btw) while it was being recorded so did it himself. Hopefully it will be fucking epic.
