When I was skinny and in second grade, I had a fat friend. That must explain why I'm fat now. Stupid ignorant fucks.
fat cheerleaders are cool, especially when they're happy and not moopy. Throw them real high wheeeeee
Since the day I was born i've been around people who smoke a pack a day, now at the age I am I still live and hang with people who smoke and I never, I repeat NEVER had the urge to smoke, so I say that this article is BS. I'm not saying that your opinion is wrong just to clear it up a bit. Same goes for drugs, 4 of my 5 siblings have done/still are doing drugs and I would never dream of doing such a thing. I think that it's just a way of placing the blame elsewhere, yeah, you can pick up some habits from friends, but you're not going to tell me someone gain 200+ pounds from hanging with fat people.
You're lucky; I started smoking because I grew up watching my parents smoke all my life, and then my brother started when he was 15. I wanted to try it one day and then BOOM! Addicted.
Fat friend: Hey, want to go see a movie? Normal guy: I'm feeling fat, and sassy! An E-cookie to whoever gets that reference, dumb as it was.
UnicronHound, are you familiar with how science works? See, they collect this thing called "evidence." "Evidence" consists of lots and lots of pieces of data. In this case, the people making the statement will have looked at a lot of people. They won't have gone up to one skinny guy and asked "Hey, do you hang around with a lot of fatties?"
Wait, you didn't catch it from being around other sad pandas? Seriously though. If your friends are constantly going out to eat as a social thing, you're likely to do that with them. If all of their social activities are sedentary, you're likeley to be sedentary with them. Eventually, there's a good chance those things will carry over to your own habits even when your friends aren't around. Will it ALWAYS happen? No. Rather, a TENDENCY for it to happen has been found. Is it really that hard for people to grasp the idea?
Yes. We've already seen the "it's your genes" argument come out, which is such a cliched fat person defense I'm almost surprised someone had the nerve to use it. And yes, there are different body types, we can't all be Schwarzenneger, etc, etc. I've seen the Bullshit! episode on fitness as well. But a lot (most?) overweight people don't want to admit that they're overweight because they eat too much and don't excercise enough. Case in point: my sister works in an office, so not a lot of excercise there. Her boss usually breakfasts either on McDonald's or a bacon and egg baguette. The woman goes out for a pasty mid-morning, lunches on more Maccies or baked potato with all sorts of mayo-related fillings, and snacks on crisps and sweets throughout the day. Despite this, she claims she can't understand why she's so fucking vast. A lot of fat people are going to shoot this down because it doesn't allow them to be a victim. It's saying "hey, you and your friends should stop playing Halo til three in the morning, get off your asses, get some excercise and stop eating crap all the time." That's much less appealing than being able to blame your genetic makeup, which allows you to do what you want.
I don't think the genetics of it has as much to do with body type as it does metabolism. Some people's bodies are genetically more inclined to store fat. Thing is, that doesn't mean an affected person is going to be fat no matter what, like some people want to make it out. It means the person has to work harder than others in order to compensate and stay healthy. Looking at the "it's genetic" angle realistically would make things harder, not provide an easy way out. But of course people try to use it that way anyhow.
Optimus Sledge, I happen to know exactly how science works, I'm not some stupid hick and I really hate it when pricks talk down to me like if I was some country hick. Not that I'm calling you a prick. Most of the so called "scientists" today don't do actual studies like they should. Most them them just take in about 100 or so people ask questions, and then they formulate a theory, these people look at research of 5,000 kids, they never say they did the research, just that they look at research. I never suggested that they would've gone up to someone and asked a skinny kid "do you hang around with fatties". Did it ever, even once in the artilce say that if you have a fat friend you will pick up the "bad habit" NO, it said you're likely to. Until they have a conclusive answer to it then they shouldn't print BS. All of the following are suggestive, not facts, from the article: So yeah, tell me again how this is facts and not just inconclusive research. Well I'll answer that for you it's NOT facts. Until they can prove what their theory is then tht whole article is just to get soccer moms to say "OMG fatties may be making my little johnny fat, I keep him away from them for his own good"
i know why im fat. its no mystery; i eat. a lot. and 70% of the time im eating stuff that i shuoldnt be and dont really need to be eating. wow... i think im drunk.
