Great discussion of the movie guys, really enjoyed listening to it.

The desert outside the Smithsonian is one of the major head scratches for me. I'm not from the US, but even I caught that error, and to make it even more bizarre, there seemed to be no plot based reason to do it. There was nothing in the dialog or action for that scene that needed to have a desert with aircraft outside the museum. Like a few things other in the movie, it just seemed to be odd for odd's sake.

Oh, and:lolol  at the idea of Commander Doomwheel running screaming to escape from Mad Murdering Prime!

It's really quite simple, Jetfire made the back door of the air and space museum into a space bridge to Arizona. :D

A fun podcast, but I do agree with others, that large chunks of the movie were left untouched. Perhaps the movie review needs it's own supplemental?

Also :cry  no more spoiler guy, your #1 fan will miss you.

Guys, guys, guys... I'm listening to the podcast and while it's incredible, it always kills me when intelligent geeks seem to miss the point when it comes to offensive stereotypes.

If you go straight for the jugular of "Is it racist?!??!!" the word alone is so extreme that it takes you to another realm that's easily deniable and misses the point.

    No it's not racist.

But it is pretty offensive. And that's the point. Not only do they portray grossly exaggerated ghetto hoodrats, buuuut... they also come equipped with the offensive visuals of big ears, bucktoothed and one of them...... big lips.

Now... I don't know if it's racist cuz that term in this day and age is almost outdated. It implies burning crosses, violence, stripping people of their rights and so forth.

I don't think Mudflap and Skids or their creators are setting out to do that. Instead they created to characters that... somebody thought would be funny and based them around just about as offensive a stereotype that you can have for black people.

No, not all black people act that way. And yes, poser can act that way. But here, it portrayed in a way to look as stupid and insulting as possible guys. There are black people that talk like this, yes... but it's a lifestyle they're born in to. Not chosen.... well.. not completely. And nobody likes to have who they are made fun of or look stupid for other people to laugh at.

I'm a geek. Transformer fan. And if a movie chose to make a character who was a geek and Transformer fan, but make him as ugly and stupid as possible.... it'd put me off.

Video gamers hate it when the media portrays the as Columbine killers and their games as murder simulators... even if it's for laughs.

And black people aren't fans of having some of their subcultures treated as moronic punchlines.

I and my friend are black. We're about as unstereotypical as they come. We're also faaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrr from easily offended. Between each other we do all sorts of off color humor. But the buckteeth, big lips and almost ******ed portrayal of cartoonish ghetto folk just.... God. It ruined every scene for me.

Hope that sheds some light on the topic.

It's not racist, but eeehhhh..... it was offensive and pretty unfunny for some people.

Did anyone else juxtapose the fight scene in the forest with the scene in Armada with the kids bitching out an Autobot for knocking over a tree and Prime says they won't kill any trees as they are alive?

While I see why it bothered you, I don't think I missed the point at all. I just didn't think it was offensive. :D

Just like I wouldn't be all that offended by an overweight robot nerd character, and just like I don't get offended by the far worse treatment of german stereotypes all over the place.

While I stand by the points made in the podcast, I'll always understand that people have different thresholds- but I can guarantee you that I didn't miss the point. ;)

Well, for one, I think our use of the term "racist" was a bit of hyperbole, and we very much were using it in a sense to describe general stereotyping or prejudice in general. I thought the way Vangelus emphasis the word racist in a humorous sense made that point clear. I'm sorry it did not.

I guess I'm just out of the loop, but since when are buck teeth and big ears a black stereotype? I have seen the buckteeth stereotype used for white hillbillies far more often than anyone else. The funny thing is, I saw no one complaining about the twins' appearance being offensive until they started talking the way they did. Then all of a sudden it's offensive? So it's ok to make fun of people with buckteeth, but if they are black with buck teeth, it's suddenly wrong. Hmm. I think this goes back to the point I made in the podcast about people decrying these "stereotypes" are really the mains ones propagating them.

Again, like we said on the podcast, I know just as many whites, Asians, and Hispanics that talk like that as I do blacks. It's done mostly because with today's youth, it's a popular subculture, and they adopt it. Whether they are born into the environment, or do it by choice. Either way, that lifestyle, and way of talking, breaks racial boundaries, and for people to immediately assume it's targeting black subculture is, frankly, ignorant to today's society in my opinion.

You just made my point. All of the examples you used are lifestyles chosen by people. It has nothing to do with race. People are born with the color of their skin, but they are not born as geeks, toy collectors, and gamers. 7 years ago I was not collecting toys. If a movie made fun of it, I probably would have thought it was funny. What would I do now? Suck it the hell up.

I have a friend that had one of his high-school buddies look him up on Facebook. They got together all these years later, and the dude totally was talking like the twins times 5. He never did that in his life, now it was over flowing. It was a choice he made at a later part in his life. Just like the twins chose to talk like that, as they adopted the subculture.

PLEASE don't think I am trying to be insensitive or tell you that your opinions do not matter. But in a world that is so close to getting rid of this racial crap, so many people are holding onto it and decrying it everywhere at the slightest hint. I'm not accusing you of doing that, but I think we all need to lighten up a little bit, and when an actual case of blatant racism/prejudice/discrimination/whatever appears, we can all tackle it together.

For the record, I DID NOT like the way the twins were portrayed. Like Seth, I think it's a lazy way to create a character. The opposite in my opinion would be Wall-E. That movie created believable, unique characters without using stereotypes at all. I was disappointed to see the characters in RotF written the way they were.

Gogdog pretty much covered all the points, but I did want to point out that I myself have big ears and buck teeth(Though maybe not quite as cartoonly proportioned as Skids.) and I'm white.
So I'm basically living proof that they whole visual stereotype argument is a load of bull dookie.

The big "lip" argument on Mudflap also doesn't really hold, seeing as the mouth makes up roughly 50% of the character's head mass.
He doesn't have big lips, he just has a big mouth.

If anyone is interested here is a non-Transformers podcast hosted by a black guy and a white dude. They talk about the movie and tackle the Skids/ Mudflap issue also. Do keep in mind they don't start on ROTF and are talking about Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

Great, now all I'm picturing is the Spoiler Guy humping TJ Omega's leg while leering at Vangelus.

Cool. Listening to the whole thing, It definitely sounds like a lot of people generally had the same feeling about this film, in that it had a great idea that just did not play out in the end result.

Weeeellll, on the point of the German stereotype, it is different. Like you said, different folk from different backgrounds have different thresholds for things. If we had a significant actual German population in America and they were to be offended , I wouldn't wonder why. ;)
