Almost $400 million worlwide in a week yet there will still be people claiming it's the worst movie ever. Less than 1% of the board population, much less the global population, can't be wrong. Can they?

I'm not seeing too many "Its the worst movie evah its the sucketh" posts...a few without a doubt, but I do see an equal amount of "Its the greatest movie evah the haterz can suckz it" posts however. Don't pretend there aren't nuts on both sides.

And we all know that box-office totals don't equal quality or actual opinion about how good a movie actually is. Spider-man 3 was the highest grossing movie of 2007 and it is generally panned today.

A lot of people doubted this movie. So far it's been humorous to watch.

Good or bad is a qualitative measurement. The only quantitative measurement is box office numbers.

Not really. Stating a movie is good or bad is simply a matter of opinion. Box office numbers, by comparison, are a matter of fact. You and I can like a movie and someone else can hate it. But at the end of the day, the numbers are the only measurement that can be used to factually compare one movie to another.

To be honest I'm seeing equal craziness on both sides, and it's these extreme, polarised views that are turning this forum into a war-zone.

it's funny, i remember a while back when paramount was looking like it was going to go out of business, and now you've got them releasing Iron Man, Transformers, NuStar Trek with Joe (whcih i don't think is gonna have the franchise bankability of TF) and the rest of the Avengers movies (IM2, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers) all on deck...

Which is pretty much what I said. Box Office numbers measure Financial success in comparison to other movies, yes. But they don't measure actual quality of the film or overall opinion of the film per the one example I used Spider-man 3. Another box office success that generally has a negative opinion is X-Men: Last Stand.

Funny thing is, the movie forum is really the only place to post right now as every other forum seems rather dead.

"And we all know that box-office totals don't equal quality or actual opinion about how good a movie actually is. Spider-man 3 was the highest grossing movie of 2007 and it is generally panned today."

"Good or bad is a qualitative measurement. The only quantitative measurement is box office numbers."

You just both said that box office numbers have no way to tell if a movie is good quality-wise, it just shows how good it did in terms of raking in money. So you both indirectly agree that, because of this fact, it is possible a shit movie can still do well.

And sure enough, different people, different tastes, so what is good to one person is bad to another, but in the end, if you take the scores of what critics are giving it (a rating that is made out of an average of all their professional* opinions), it's not hard to see that this movie, QUALITY WISE, is not good. That doesn't make you wrong for liking the movie, and you have every right, but you can definitely get a general idea of the quality of a movie.

*I said professional because I mean that these people judge movies for a living. They look for plot, characterization, flow, editing, etc. etc. All points to define if a movie is good quality wise as a MOVIE. Now I'm sure there will be jackasses among them that are old and just don't 'connect' to Transformers, but there will also be alot of them who will be objective about that fact and not give it less points because it is about toy robots.

It's all just like a good civil survey: not everybody in the country might fill it in, but they will be filled in by the right percentages of different classes of people, so in the end they will give a good estimate of how the population thinks.

If you want a movie about robots fighting, then you got lucky, ROTF caters your every need! Does not mean that this is a quality movie. Please don't go to great lengths to defend this movie on that level, it cannot be done.

You can however, defend it with the argument of 'fun', which is exactly what I have been trying to do for the first movie (that I think quality wise is way better - but it's still far from perfect). It's critically claimed to be a shit movie. Well, you had FUN. Thats very fine indeed!
