True words.

These non-transforming, or barely transforming TF items do not sell well. At least, not as well as "normal" Transformers. In Hungary,even to this day you can find Movie Optimus helmets, Prime, Starscream and Ratchet 'blasters' in stores, along with the very simplified toys, like FABs. I do not understand why Hasbro/Takara keeps making them.

In a non-transforming toyline like Hulk or Ironman, they make sense, and kids would want nothing more then a mask with which they can speak like Ironman, or Hulk smash gloves. But really - would a kid want a Leader sized transforming Optimus for Christmas, or a big OP helmet ? I'd say 80% of the kids would choose the OP toy.

Devastator is gonna be an especially huge flop due to the very little articulation the toy has based on the pics. I mean, the guy is 22 years older then Fort Max, and yet has only about 2 more joints, from the looks of it...

 

i'll probably still buy the larger devastator, too, if for nothing else, to complete my display.

I agree. Plus, wouldn't drop test only apply for the individual bots (unless they'd be selling Devs in an already combined form)? I mean, none of the combiners so far, not even RID or Energon would survive a drop test without falling apart to their component parts. I know, they fell off the desk sometimes...   So a drop test is a lame excuse. Especially if the individual bots are sold separately, drop test would not be an issue.

 

I understand your point - sorry, I was really using the wrong words to make my points about designs/orders...  

And indeed as you say, Takara would be silly to secure a license to produce one or two toys of their own. It'd cost too much and would not come back from the sales. I believe in 2007, all they did were the "dress-up" protoform OP and BB. Did those ever see international release, btw.

Uh, to my mind a drop test is a prefectly valid "excuse".

It's not applying to how store employees/factory workers/whatever handle the packaged merchandise. It's to see if it'd break if a kid dropped it while playing with it. Not come apart, but actually break in some unrepairable way. They'd do it on the combined form as well as every individual mode of a combiner, regardless of what mode they come in.

 

That's what they're doing, yes. That was a Q&A question recently.

You might be missing the point of the drop test. Of course the Energon combiners would fall apart, but they wouldn't necessarily break in any irreparable manner, or in any way that might threaten somebody. A toy fails a drop test by cracking or shattering against a concrete floor. They don't want sharp shards of plastic anywhere.

Can't wait to see this towering over Optimus and the other Legends figures.

I've been saying all along that this was possible. It's just a matter of making the right compromises.

It's pretty cool now that they've actually done it, but I think people may be overrating the figure a little. It's not exactly the big improvement on the energon combiners that I was hoping for. The biggest flaw, as I see it is the arms. The upper arms are too small, and the lower arms too clumsy. Scrapper's bot mode also isn't up to much.

I imagine Overload was added because they wanted to keep Scavenger legends size and they needed a way to make up the extra bulk. It's cool that they've made him a Bonecrusher homage.

 

the "drop test" also assumes a drop height of six feet which is a bit excessive for normal play among normal sized children, I think.

part of me feels like it encourages children to be careless and possibly destructive towards their belongings, which isn't exactly a good thing.

but that's not what this thread is about, anyway. <.<

I like it. They could have made the deluxes and voyagers combine that would have been great. But better than the supreme Devastator.

 

Hey, when I was a kid I played with my toys by sometimes literally throwing them as high in the air as I could or against trees when they got "hit". True, I hate myself for it now since I had about 10 G1 toys that would've been highly valuable now, but thing is.... kids do that kinda stuff. I wasn't the only one.
