It's hard to say which is better at this point, give that I've only seen Star Trek. However, I can say this; RoTF has a HIGH bar to reach for, and I think that Star Trek is WAY better than TF1.

Except this Star Trek movie. I can't even begin to tell you the number of people I've talked to who said they never liked Trek but loved this movie and want to see it again. This thing will be the first ST movie to get over 200 mil and 250 is definitely in play. Those milestones wouldn't be a possible if it weren't for a heap of non fans going to see it and giving it a thumbs up.

I felt it struck a nice balance. Me and my mother are both Trekkies and we both enjoyed the film because it felt like it had plenty for the old Trekkies. My step-dad isn't even into sci-fi much less Star Trek but also enjoyed it because he said it felt like it had more going on than just the sci-fi.

I really want to see the numbers next week to see if people are talking other people into seeing the film or if the numbers will slack off.

Youre right, this one will but that will be for if/when they come out with Star trek 2. Right now you have Tf fans and non-tf fans that were won over with the first movie coming to see ROTF; THIS star trek movie has mostly Star trek fans coming to it becuase the previous ones didnt win many non-star trek fans. Thats why I say ROTF will be the better.

Star Trek was awesome!! Although it did win over many non-fans, Transformers is still more accessible to the general moving going public than Star Trek is

    THIS.
Transformers ROTF looks good, but I am not so much of a fan that I would lie to myself if it does end up sucking. And by that, I mean if it does not vastly improve the quality of character development, humor, camera perspective, etc. from the first movie.

I saw Star Trek yesterday with my dad. We both loved it. My dad wasn't into Star Trek, he saw only the Star Trek with Patrick Stewart. I haven't had much fun at the movies in a long time.
I agree with everyone that said that this new Trek has managed to attract non-fans.
Despite that, I still firmly believe that Transformers 2 will kick Star Trek in the balls.

That's why I want to see next week's box office because I still contend that the opening weekend numbers only tell you how well the ad people did their job, it's the weeks after that which tell you if people are telling their friends to watch it or not.

Sort of like how Wolverine started out with a very respectable opening weekend of $85 million but this weekend it only managed to bring in $27 million. Or how Monsters vs Aliens was written off for it's opening weekend of $59 million but it held on to make about $187 million so far.

This....and also considering the competition Trek will be facing in the coming weekends to close out May (Angels and Demons, Terminator, Night at the Museum 2, Up). Aside from Up (which might as well already be box office gold since it's made by Pixar), they're all followups to successful previous entries in their respective series.

Star Trek TOS was originally created to be this way. The show had so many strong undertones, most of which weren't subtle. Star Trek used to use the sci-fi as a story telling device and wouldn't only rely on it as a crutch. That's basically what caused Trek to suck for as long as it did. It had flimsy story telling and relied on the "wow factor" of the visuals to give the film strength.

I'd expect ROTF to do well in the box office receipts, but I expect the reviews for Star Trek to be much higher and better based on the story.

It's possible that Star Trek is the better movie, but almost without a doubt that ROTF will be the spectacle movie of the year...

See that bolded part? That's a common misconception that will last a few months before fading away. Prior to the first movie TF was no more accessible to the general audience than ST. Both had that geek/nerd factor that made "normal" people wary. What made TF so niche was that it was basically about toys. For ST its own fans were making the general audience look sideways and give it a pass.

What Bay et al did with TF1 was re-establish the franchise in a manner that made people scratch their heads in wonder at the "metal"-based, highly advanced, shape shifting alien robots as they interacted with earth; and forget about the toys that spawned them. Abrams et al had a similar, but equally defying, challenge: they had to re-establish ST in a way that made the general audience look at the characters instead of at their weird fans. And they succeeded in more ways than one. Those contentious Trekkers angered by the changes made for the movie are becoming laughing-stocks in the eyes of many who aren't as emotionally invested in the franchise. And that's just one of the separations that was needed.

Unless the writers backpedal with ST2, - which, given ST movie history, is possible - the franchise can be considered accessible.

My guess is that since Star Trek was a new movie, new universe and such, it'll attract more attention than TF2 this time. What made TF1 so great was the introduction to that universe, and so goes with Star Trek. So TF2 isn't going to be much of a "hey look at me I'm new" sort of appeal. But, since Transformers ended up appealing to the audience in a more modern way, with the idea that THIS COULD HAPPEN, maybe it'll have more appeal. I dunno, my guess is that Star Trek is going to get more media attention.
Unless.......TF2 pulls a "The Dark Knight" and just BLOWS AWAY MINDS!
