I really hope hasbro is going to make this! I want one but really don't care for 3 things; the chrome, the die-cast parts and the price.

MP Skywarp, MP Grimlock & BT Smokescreen are, but not MP Prime & Megs. Neither of them towered over their original teams the way they do here.

As much as I love meshing my Autobot Alts with the Masterpieces for a sort of "ultimate modern G1 collection", I could never deny that Prime & Megs are just too big by comparison - in a size league of their own. In fact, they should be closer to MP Grimlock's size if we wanted a fairly accurate scale, while Grimlock should be closer to MP Prime's size. Ironically, a lot the original G1 figures (ie: the Autobots) were in better scale with each other :)

    Excellent post.

    We should also add:

    1) Labor prices rising in China, making the figures more expensive to produce.

    2) An exchange rate that's currently not favoring the US$.

Regarding Grimlock, I can't wait till BBTS fills my preorder so I can ship my PoL.

Very true (excluding the minibots) and although the scale was off, at least the Autobot cars, Prime, and the Seekers had some sort of continuity in that they were all designed to accommodate pilot figures of the same size. :D

I know the scale isn't exactly the same as the original toys, but Prime and Megs were roughly the same height, and both were larger than Grimlock or Starscream, who were themselves larger than Autobot cars. I agree though that Prime and Megs need to lose a few inches before they really "fit" with the other MP figures and the Alts.

Exactly. That's the reason I cancelled my preorder when I saw how small he was compared to MP Prime and Megs.

If anything, MP Prime should be a bit TALLER to fit in scale with the 1:24 scale cars. His tires are about the same size as the rest of the Alternators, but semi truck tires are usually quite a bit larger than car tires. I would put MP Prime at around 1:30 or so. Still, I think he's a reasonably close fit in Bot mode with the alts.

MP Starscream, of course, should be more than twice his normal size, since the MP toy is at about 1:60 scale. Classics Seekers are about 1:100 scale, and G1 seekers are about 1:72 scale. If scale were kept true, Starscream would be more than twice as tall as Prime, and three times the size of most autobots, who would be just taller than Screamer's knee.

    Other scales: g1 Jetfire - 1:55, Legends Bumblebee - 1:55 or 1:60, Most classics autobots - 1:35

Real life scale vs. show accurate scale. I'm pretty sure when people talk/debate/bitch about scale accuracy, it's in reference to the show. At least where G1, Animated, etc. are concerned. Movie seems to be more aimed at real life.

Yes, in terms of the truck mode's relation to the Alternators, he should technically be even bigger... however, I think my biggest beef with MP Optimus is his overall bodily proportions compared to other MP figures and Alts. He's just cartoonishly beefy and blocky... he looks great on his own, but weirdly awkward when standing next to the Alts. The style of the robot really doesn't quite match.

The same height with a leaner profile and smaller head might blend better...

Actually, I've often thought of MP Prime and Megs as being a little too big and bulky to be easily...um...displayed...(yeah, lets go with that) and I'd be happy to see a slightly smaller Prime/Megs to go along with MP Starscream (et al) and Grimlock. Not going to happen, but bigger is not always better.

I'm totally getting Grimlock, he looks awesome. Birthday coming up, so perfect excuse :)

He might not scale well to Optimus and Megatron, but it looks like his size is just about perfectly in line with the Seekers (As in, bigger).

I never expected him to be MP Optimus-sized, so I'm perfectly happy with him as is.

had the robo mode been made to be as tall as MP prime, the figure could have been too massive and cost much more (i'll admit he does seem overpriced, maybe we are paying for superior quality components too) .

He perhaps has a bit of that bulkhead syndrome. people saying voyager bulkhead is too short dont realise that even increasing his height by just an inch would effectively double his plastic mass.

i must admit though i just dont get the scale queens, TF's are never to scale (thanks to that accident of combining diaclone and microman toys together), the day TF's are to scale there will be a disgruntled 'but TF's are ALWAYS off scale, they arent TF's' movement.

MP Grimlock is at the perfect size for a Masterpiece. Actually, he's in scale with MP03. That's why I dislike MP Prime. He's a chunky 12" figure because Hasbro wanted it like that to celebrate the 20th anniversary. And because of MP Prime Takara had to make a 12" Megatron that turned into an oversized pistol.

I hope that Takara makes a decent MP Prime and a 1:1 scale MP Megatron one day. Heck, they could simply adapt and improve the THS02 mold into the MP line, in scale with Grimlock.
