I have to concur that the new bot mode definitely leaves something to be desired... even if we do get hands. Even though I'm on record as hating the old movie Starscream, it does have some things in it's favour in comparison. I prefer the way the wing panels fold around the shoulders. It looks makes him look tough, like he's wearing some sort of ice hockey or american football armour padding.

Overall he just appears more muscular and robust.

The new Starscream definitely looks like a solid piece of work. Massive improvement on the alt mode. He seems very well put together, judging by the video review. Very ingenious and well engineered. But bot mode just looks awkard. The hips are too wide, and everything's a bit scrawnier.

He's a bit like a crushed moth somehow.

The massive improvements on the alt mode means that I'll probably buy one. Although... any notion of a G1 repaint or any other repaint will make me wait yet again.

In fact, I like the changes in both modes. The only thing that's putting me off is his hands. They stick out of the jet. Maybe someone will do a mod to make those hands fold up? Maybe just even curl up to make a fist?

On that subject, what about the insignia on his other wing? The first thing that came to mind was is it a Cybertronian version of the Decepticon symbol, but then I thought wait a second, that doesn't make sense.

Has this shown up on any of the other ROTF toys?

He looks better in some ways (hands, alt mode, chest details) and worse in others (legs, head, bot mode), but I can't get on board with the Cybertronian symbols.

I have the first SS, still in a box (unlike the rest of my movie figures), as a backup in case Has/Tak never releases a proper Starscream:

    - LEADER CLASS
    - Legs that bend back at the proper angle
    - Alt mode without giant robot fingers hanging out of the back
    - Wings that rotate to his back
    - Bot mode jetpacks

So essentially, a Masterpiece Movie Starscream. I know, I know... but a guy can dream, right?

Now, this is to me, an improvement over the original.

In the comic, SS used his claws to "mark" himself. On the figure it looks like he used a paint roller. Having the sigils etched into the plastic would have been a nice touch, but the black tribals are pretty well-done.

If the feet were a little bigger (or at least spread-toed) and he had engines on his back it'd be perfect. I never liked the original SS's transformation, so once I saw that this one didn't have that fidgety shoulder hinge or leg slides, I was sold.

Yeah, unless the tats strike me as particularly awesome in the film (or JS / redline / Tony / FR / Crefigz / et al do a repaint with them looking good) I'll be killing some time with some rubbing alcohol & a movie on this mold...

I might be tempted to love the original mold more if not for the ******ed arm design (shoulders too...) --plus the feet of the original would have more pull if not for the fact that they cover the entire fuselage on their own & add 50% more bulk to the jet than this mold...

I wish there was a way to have SS legs (particularly thigh & feet shapes) with the new mold, but there's not.

But, if they release a hybrid in the future that has the arms & legs a little bulkier & both fit in the alt mode as clean or cleaner than the new, I'll join with the mob & say this one sucks... but for now, this one is still the winner.

A little paint (maybe apoxy to fix the head) and possibly som balljoints for the arms) is a much better exchange than the arm/hand/jetpack (long live iDD, his work is awesome...) creation & evolution we've seen on the original mold for the past 2 years...
